  1. Currently reading: The Odyssey with my 9th grade dd and still reading Modern Medea by Steven Weisenburger . Trying to decide between The Young World and Uprooted for my next fiction. I am behind again. Trying to remember if there are other books that I haven’t listed. 24. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys (YA historical fiction. Engrossing. Couldn’t put it down.) 23. Scarlett Undercover by Jennifer Latham ( Decent YA mystery novel, I really liked that the main character was a Muslim teenage girl. ) 22. The Curse of Beauty: The Scandalous & Tragic Life of Audrey Munson, America’s First Supermodel by James Bone 21. The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin (Quick read. Enjoyed it.) 20. These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 by Nancy Turner (Historical fiction – I am sure I read about it on the boards. Very Good.) 19. Medea by Euripides (with my 9th grade dd) 18. Miss Julia Inherits a Mess by Ann Ross - on audio. 17. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr ( Been on my to-read list for awhile – so glad I read it. Marvelously heartbreaking and hopeful. Loved it.) 16. The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley (middle grade novel that was a Newberry honor book this year – loved it.) 15. Antigone by Sophocles (with my 9th grade dd)
  2. The team's mascot at a local university is the Fighting Pickle. Cracks me up every time I hear it.
  3. I am sure I remember a recent thread (possibly a BAW thread) that mentioned a lovely book store or comics shop in Paris. My daughter has looked online and sees that there are multiple stores in the city like this. I just remember someone mentioning a store and it sounded like something she would love. She leaves for Paris tomorrow and they will have a couple of free afternoons. I have searched every possible combination of words I can think of, and still can't find it. Does anyone remember this? Thanks so much for your help, Cindy
  4. She will be travelling with EF Tours, and her teacher/chaperone mentioned that they should be able to email from their smart phones at locations with Wi-Fi. Other students have mentioned apps that she could download to text from overseas, but I am not sure if that will leave us with hidden fees or charges. Anyone with experience trying to keep in touch with a young adult overseas or an app to recommend. (She has an android phone not an IPhone if that matters.) For reference she is 18 and just graduated high school, I am not really concerned about safety, but it would be great to check in and get updates on their adventures. This is her first trip out of the country. Thanks, Cindy H.
  5. So sorry. What a wonderful cat! Glad you have great memories of him. :grouphug: Cindy
  6. Sorry if this has already been posted recently, I did try to search before posting and didn't see anything. The annual audio sync Young Adult audio book give away has begun. I missed the first 2 weeks, but it looks like there are some good things coming up. www.audiobooksync.com I can't seem to create a link. Cindy
  7. Classic Short Stories, Summarized By Someone Who Has Never Read Them (Once again, do read the comments.) "“There’s one,†she said, pointing. “Where?†she said. “I don’t believe you.†“Right over there,†she insisted. “Look at him.†She looked. “Well,†she said after a moment, “I suppose you’re right.†“It was a little difficult to find him,†she said, not wanting to rub it in. “A little,†she agreed. “But the important thing is that we found him.†“We sure did,†she said. – A Good Man Is Hard To Find, Flannery O’Connor" Regards, Kareni Thanks for posting this. My 15 yr old dd and I laughed together this morning over these. We especially loved the summary of The Monkey's Paw and To Build a Fire, but some of the comments were great too.
  8. Currently reading: Negroland, by Margo Jefferson and The Naked Quaker: True Crimes and Controversies from the Courts of Colonial New England by Diane Rapaport. Currently listening to Middlemarch on audio – I’ve never read this before and am really enjoying it. Gave up on Meet Me in Atlantis by Mark Adams on audio – it just wasn’t holding my attention. 13. Oedipus the King by Sophocles ( with my 9th grade dd) 12. The Passenger by Lisa Lutz 11. The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman ( YA novel set in 1812 with a sort of steampunk vibe) 10. The Good Girl by Mary Kubica ( Mystery/suspense novel.) 9. Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith (Psychological suspense. ) 8. Room by Emma Donoghue ( Enjoyed that it was told from the child’s perspective and that it showed what happened after.) 7. Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints by P. J. Brackston (Audio) (Finished listening. Didn’t love it.)
  9. Looking at this to help my 15 yr old dd prepare for her first AP exam. She is taking the Human Geography exam in May. My oldest dd used Shmoop through her public high school last year to prepare for the ACT and liked it alright, but I didn't really look at it much. Any other online prep you could recommend? Thanks, Cindy
  10. My 15 yr old dd, K, read it and enjoyed it. She says to be aware that there is some language scattered throughout the book ( a few instances of sh#t and a couple of f###s). Felicia Day talks about her homeschool experience (maybe more unschooling from what K tells me) and her life growing up - she sounds extremely smart from the bits and pieces I heard from K. K says she mentions her first kiss, but nothing further. Hope this helps. PS I can't tell K, but we just purchased tickets ( to go in her Easter basket) to see Felicia Day speak about the book at a bookstore approx. an hour away at the end of April. PPS Not sure what it is called but K said that she was not comfortable watching a web show that is referenced in the book. Maybe something Day did earlier in her career - I don't know. My dd just said there was a lot of language and sex talk that made her uncomfortable. Just wanted to let you know in case your dd might want to watch since it is mentioned. Sorry I don't know the name.
  11. My 18 year old dd voted for the first time yesterday. We went together after school and it was neat to see her enthusiastic about it. She was acknowledged as a first time voter by several workers at our poll which was sweet.
  12. 7. Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints by P. J. Brackston( Audio. Finished it, but didn't really like it. Not as fun as I thought it would be and some elements just didn't work for me.) 8. Room by Emma Donoghue (This is a title that I read early in January and just remembered - I really like that it was told from the child's perspective and that it delved into their lives after their rescue.) 9. Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith (Psychological suspense. I had seen the Hitchcock film many years ago, but am not sure it followed the book to the letter. I think I will put it in my Netflix queue to rewatch. ) Currently reading The Good Girl by Mary Kubica and trying to decide between Negroland, The War that Saved My Life, and That's Not English: Britishisms, Americanisms, and What our English Says About Us as my next book. I will have to see what I am drawn to in a day or two. My current audio book is Meet Me in Atlantis by Mark Adams - so far I am just okay with this one.
  13. I would love some other book related podcasts, also. Here are a couple of others I listen to - although not as regularly as All the Books. Books and Authors by BBC Radio - I've only listened to a couple of these. Publishers Weekly PW KidsCast - lots of interviews with authors of children's and YA titles
  14. Sorry that I missed out on reading the Forster book along with a group. I have a copy of Passage, but haven't read it. Loved A Room with a View and enjoyed Howards End and Where Angels Fear to Tread by him years ago. If anyone else likes book related podcasts, I have been enjoying the review of new titles each week on All the Books. ( Sorry if that is already well known to readers here.) (Edited to fix spelling and add book titles.)
  15. I hope it's not too late to join in for the year. I will have to catch up - I think I am slightly behind but I may remember another title from January. I am enjoying the recommendations and the reviews from others. My list so far: Currently reading: 7.Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints by P. J. Brackston (Audio) (Not loving this. Will finish listening. I thought it sounded like a fun idea, but I think it was better as an idea than book, for me.) 6. Speak by Louisa Hall (Interesting. Unlike anything I can remember reading before. It was a slow read for me, but I am glad I stuck with it.) 5. The Crocodile Bird by Ruth Rendell 4. A Hanging at Cinder Bottom: A Novel by Glenn Taylor (literary historical fiction set in 1910 WV - Well written heist novel with a twist. ) 3. Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart (Loved it.) 2. The Werewolf of Bamberg by Oliver Potzsch (Audio)(Part of the Hangman's Daughter series) 1. Alice + Freda Forever: A Murder in Memphis by Alexis Coe
  16. I will definitely share this with my Latin-learning teen. She has lost the Latin love recently, and I am sure this will amuse her. Thanks for sharing.
  17. Looked and appreciated. She is talented! I will share with my artist when she gets home from school.
  18. Thanks for the photos. Love them all but that little b/w kitten is soooooooo cute. So glad you took this momma cat and her babies in. We have 4 indoor only kitties, and I guess that is enough but if we were closer I'd have to seriously consider just one more.
  19. I have collected Shirley Temple memorabilia since I was 12. Mostly paper items (magazines, scrapbooks, photos, books, etc.) and I store them in a glass fronted cabinet in our bedroom. I collected more before I had children, but have started to add a few items a year in the past few years. My 18yr old dd got me another ST scrapbook from the 1930s for Christmas. Since the internet came along, prices are much lower than they were when I was a teenager in the 1980s, but I also have less to spend on things that aren't essential. I also collect books. Lots and lots of books. I enjoy having them around and perusing at my leisure. I hope you find something you enjoy collecting. Cindy
  20. Clicked. The art looks amazing. Is there any particular thing to click on the portfolio page? PS You may want to add Star Wars to the title. I am sure many members are fans and/or have kids who would enjoy seeing the drawings.
  21. My Avast program is going beserk everytime I try to run a search on the boards in the past couple of days. I thought at first that I could bypass this by searching on Google for the subject + WTM, but my antivirus program still blocks the pages. I am just looking for normal things - Geometry and physical science on the HS board and Time4learning reviews on all of the boards. Anyone else have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks
  22. I am so sorry to hear of your situation. The fact that you are dealing with family must make it so hard, and that it is ongoing must be a terrible burden. I understand the feelings of betrayal, but it does help knowing I am not alone. I hope that knowing you are not alone helps you also. My dh is also able to move past things better than I, and I sometimes find it hard to accept that. It is sometime frustrating that he is not as resentful as I am, you know? That sounds ridiculous, I know. This thread has helped me immensely. I hope you find something to help you, too.
