  1. Does anyone know of some good free biology videos? We're doing Apologia biology and I'm looking for videos on the five kingdoms. My son is having a hard time understanding everything he's reading and I think some videos would solidify the information he's reading.
  2. I also shop at thrift stores and spend very little on clothes.
  3. I have been looking at it for years. Is it their policy that this can’t be resold? Or is it because it’s a workbook and would be consumed? Could the dvd’s, text and teacher’s guide be resold?
  4. I’m not familiar with Dragonfly. We used the red wagon tutorial with the Apologia text for physical science. The dvd seemed to be pretty specific to the text so I’m assuming the biology would be similar.
  5. What a great site! Looks like there is a lot of good info on there. I love the animations.
  6. I found an Apologia DVD for $105. It also includes lecture notes, tests, etc. How much is the Abeka DVD?
  7. Could someone tell me the difference between Apologia and Abeka biology? I was planning on using Apologia, but our co-op is using Abeka so I’m considering having my son take that class instead. Is one more difficult than the other? Easier to understand?
  8. I would ask to see the written policy and would be curious about the date that it was created.
  9. We were lucky in that insurance paid for most of it. I think we had about a $100 co-pay.
  10. It was 1997 and dh brought home a computer. I remember him talking about the internet and being so amazed with email. We also had a dial-up connection and used AOL.
  11. I had a ds who used to have this problem. I explained to him that everyone picks their nose, but they do it privately. He was shocked to hear that I actually picked my nose, but that didn’t make him actually stop. So then I started picking my nose—in front of his friends! It totally grossed him out and embarrassed him and he finally stopped after a couple sessions of my public nose picking. Every once in awhile, he will pick his nose in the car. I just start picking mine . . . and he stops.
  12. I'm having the same problem. When I search for something and put quotes around it, I want to get the exact set of words within the quotations, but instead I get results with one or the other word.
  13. How about Foundations in Personal Finance? http://www.daveramsey.com/store/kids-teens/-i-foundations-in-personal-finance-i-homeschool-pack-with-1-student-workbook/prodFOUNDHOMEPKCUR.html We did a small part of this program in a co-op and loved it.
  14. I would not get into the middle of their argument. However, if I was your dh, I would not cut my hair. Or if I did, I would ask for a comparable donation to be made to Locks of Love.
  15. I’m an older mom, but sometimes I wish I started earlier.
  16. I’m an oldest. Your poll is showing that over 50% are the oldest.
  17. I’m the oldest and DH is the youngest. The main conflict is that he wants to spend more time relaxing and I want to get more work done.
  18. People like to give gifts and often, the gift is more for the joy of the gift giver than it is for the gift receiver. I don't think there is any tactful way to suggest experience-based gifts on the invitation. One possibility is to say: "In lieu of gifts, please consider donating to your favorite charity." (or you could choose a charity). Maybe say something like: "No gifts." Then ask each child to bring a 'white elephant' or homemade gift for a gift exchange game. You could play the 'dice game' with those gifts. If you're not familiar with it, here's a brief explanation. Each child brings a wrapped gift. Each child takes turns throwing the die into a pie tin. Once you get doubles, you take a gift. If you get doubles again, you can 'exchange' your gift with someone else. Once all the gifts have been chosen, you go around the circle again for however many times you'd like and then the person with doubles can 'exchange' their gift with someone else. Each person will then have one gift. Another version would be if you added in several smaller gifts and then some would get more than one. As for giving her friends something, she could make some small party favor, such as: playdough (could make different colors and/or add glitter), book marks, sidewalk chalk (recipe: http://madmaggiedesigns.blogspot.com/2009/04/homemade-sidewalk-chalk.html), cookie or candy (use different mold shapes), etc. You could also have this as an activity for the kids to do. Some of the above ideas might work. Other ideas include: decorating t-shirts or hats. Let us know how it turns out.
  19. I've bought books that had a musty/moldy smell and have never had much luck removing the odors. Here are some 'remedies' that I've heard of: Wrap a book and then put it in the freezer. Put the book in sunlight for a brief time (not longer than one hour). Then stand the book upright so that air can circulate between all the pages. Put the book in a plastic container that contains silica gel. Put the cover on and let it sit in there for several days. This is supposed to remove any moisture which could be causing the smell. Good luck!
  20. We loved The Story of 1. There are also a lot of “History Channel presents†videos that are also good.
  21. I've just been noticing them out my bedroom these last few night. In MN, we also call them "lightning bugs."
  22. We've used Dragon Naturally Speaking and like it for the most part. However, sometimes my son 'plays' with it--having fun with the things the program 'thinks' he said. So it can be a little distracting. I have pretty much given up the handwriting and opted instead to have my son type everything. It seems to work out great for him. Having dysgraphia, he also has trouble with the output of ideas--not just the physical process of writing. He needs a lot of structure/hints/graphic organizers, etc for his writing. I really like Inspritation.
