  1. True, but it seems to me that more than a few of the publicized cases of denial of treatment by private insurance companies involve these 5%/5 year threshhold cancers.
  2. I love hospice, too, but you know what? They could not control his pain. He suffered greatly, for days, for no purpose.
  3. Private insurance companies deny treatment all the time. Having watched a loved one die of cancer recently, I am considering a move to a right-to-die state. Hospice cannot control all pain.
  4. There's a Wikipedia article on the Marcellus Formation with some references, including a DOE primer on shale gas dated April 2009: http://www.netl.doe.gov/technologies/oil-gas/publications/EPreports/Shale_Gas_Primer_2009.pdf I haven't found anything very recent on natural gas on the peak oil websites (only a quick Google admittedly). Because of technological innovation, I think there will be a longer and slower decline rather than a sudden crash.
  5. You need an updated primer on natural gas. The Marcellus Formation (New York and Pennsylvania) may contain as much natural gas as the Barnett Shale in Texas. The technology to extract the natural gas from Marcellus is relatively new and has only been in use there since 2008. (Your link is dated 2001.)

  7. Natural gas and coal would be used to generate electricity. Cars would be electric. Last year, Wal-mart introduced some Peterbilt 386's which run on LNG: http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/02/20/wal-mart-now-using-lng-trucks/ Wal-mart is also looking at the hybrid electric/plug-in electric car market: Imagine your customers pulling into your parking lot, and seeing wind turbines and solar panels, and being able to charge their cars while they shop. I think that would make them feel good about shopping at your stores. It would also make them feel good if they could save money in the process. What if we fed the power generated by those wind turbines and solar powers back into the electrical grid? Just imagine the impact of our customers being able to buy eco-friendly energy at the unbeatable Wal-Mart price. http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/01/24/walmart-ceo-there-is-a-place-for-wal-mart-in-the-hybrid-electr/ Even though I'm not a fan of Wal-mart in general, I feel a bit better about peak oil if Wal-mart's thinking ahead. It's that capitalism bringing about innovation thing.
  8. Questions: I've read about peak oil, but what about coal and natural gas? The peak oil websites I've read cite natural gas studies that predate the use of hydraulic fractional drilling methods on the Marcellus Shale basin (only since 2005 or so), for example. Anyway, I think the peak oil disaster scenario -- general economic and social collapse -- is many decades, if not a couple of centuries, away. For those who believe there will be general economic and social collapse very, very soon, why aren't you limiting the size of your families?
  9. Pittsburgh is about 4-5 hours south of Niagara Falls and Fallingwater is about an hour to the southeast of Pittsburgh. http://www.carnegiemnh.org/ Carnegie Museum of Natural History is home to one of the world’s best fossil collections, including the world’s greatest collection of dinosaurs from the Jurassic Age. The museum displays five holotype—the original fossil that defines a species, usually the first or most complete specimen discovered—dinosaur skeletons. Those holotypes are Diplodocus carnegii, Tyrannosaurus rex, Apatosaurus louisae, Camptosaurus aphanoecetes, and a new species of a bird-like oviraptorosaur that has yet to be formally named. 10. OK, then. Fox News poll from April, 2009: "Nearly twice as many Americans think the actions Obama has taken since becoming president will help rather than hurt the nation's economy (52 percent to 28 percent)." http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/04/24/fox-news-poll-obamas-days/ The only point that I'm making is that this message board is not representative of the American public in general. It is representative, perhaps, of the Republican Party.
  11. :iagree: This board is not at all representative of the general American population. CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey conducted May 14-17, 2009: 63% of people questioned say they think policies being proposed by the President would push the nation in the right direction. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/05/20/cnn-poll-obama-moving-us-in-right-direction/ Pew Forum religious affiliations in the US: 26.3% Evangelical Protestant http://religions.pewforum.org/affiliations
  12. According to The Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute: Hong Kong. http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking.aspx http://www.cato.org/pubs/efw/map/index.php
  13. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Grow-It/Control-Yellow-Jackets-Technique.aspx Personally, I would use insecticide.
  14. 1995 Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds as Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. Both the letter and meeting afterwards: "I tried to forget you . . . I thought I had."
  15. See, if I were still a practicing Catholic, I would have to disagree with you there. I was taught it was "faith and works." But I've discovered that some Protestant Christians do not consider Catholics to be Christians -- hey, it's that "correct belief" thing again.
