  1. us4jones, which online courses are your children using? Could you post the website please? Thanks!
  2. If it is a displaced fracture (the ends are not aligned), it will require reduction of the fracture to align the ends and then pinning to hold it in place while it heals. If it is not displaced, the deciding factor is the angle of the fracture. Too great of a downward angle of the fracture will cause misalignment of the little finger joint and in that instance, reduction of the angle of the fracture with either pinning and splinting or just splinting would be done. If the fracture is minimally angled, then just splinting or casting is indicated. I worked as a nurse for a hand surgeon for several years... I hope this clarified things for you!
  3. They ask for photo ID at check in... This has been a problem for my 19 yr old daughter in Chicago, Atlanta and New York City (delayed or overbooked flights and no motels that will let her check in due to her age). If your child is under 21 and planning on traveling alone, you or your young adult needs to be aware that this could be an issue. Just wanted to add: My neighbor manages a motel in our tiny town (pop. 5,000) and it is the motel chains policy to not allow check in by persons under the age of 21.... BUT the front desk personel can make exceptions to this policy after checking with the manager.
  4. You might want to check with some motels from that area. This summer my 19 year old daughter was flying from Chicago to Madrid and her flight was delayed and delayed and delayed (I left the airport to catch the train back home once her and her companion were through security). She called me later that night to have me book a hotel because she was rebooked on a flight the next day... There was not a SINGLE motel in the area that would accept her because she was under 21. None of them would take a reservation from her parent on her behalf. She had her own credit/debit card and ID...she is legally an adult... but, every motel I contacted said NO. It was very frustrating! Eventually, the flight was cancelled and the airline booked her overnight in a motel... go figure!
  5. My oldest DD turned 7 on her first day of 1st grade... she is now an 18 year old senior and one of the oldest in her class. She was just not ready to start kindy as a newly turned 5 year old... she had great difficulty with separation anxiety and it would have been a disaster! Oh, I should clarify that she has gone to PS all the way through (If I knew then what I know now... she would have been home educated).
  6. :iagree: This is our set up with our DD18. She is a high school senior, taking all advanced classes (maintaining a 4.0 gpa) and works 2 jobs. She cleans up after herself, assists with cooking when she is home, does her own laundry, pays for her meals away from home, pays for her gas (I will fill up her car if I borrow it...she is so appreciative when this happens!), always lets us know where she is and when to expect her home, and (most importantly) she ADORES her 5 year old brother and spends lots of play time with him (she is a gymnastics instructor and takes him to the gym with her one day per week....he just eats it up!). No rent, no curfew, no chores... just hasn't been needed with this child.
  7. That sound normal. That specific joint looks cartoonish big after fractures/pinnings. It starts to go down slowly over a long time... months, not weeks (and it may always be a little bigger than her other ones). If she was told to start moving it, I would encourage you to work on it many times a day.... that joint is difficult to get full range of motion back.
  8. I was a surgical/office nurse for a hand surgeon for many years. Which knuckle is involved? If it is the middle interphalangeal joint (the one you use to "knock on wood"), then this would be normal, especially if there was a fracture within the joint itself. Of all the joints in the hand, that specific joint swells significantly after trauma and usually becomes very stiff when pinned, splinted or taped for any amount of time. No redness or increased pain in that joint? Just want to make sure there are no signs of infection...
  9. You mentioned there is a lot of bruising under the nail. The pain could be from a subungal hematoma (blood collection under the nail). This can cause exquisite pain...usually worse than an actual fracture. Treatment is drilling a hole in the nail to release the blood. A fracture under the nailbed should be ruled out before drilling a hole in the nail (you do not want an open pathway for bacteria that leads right to a fracture).
  10. I have used the online courses at www.patternreview.com for myself and my daughter. I have been sewing for 20 years and my daughter is just beginning to sew. I bought the beginner courses for my daughter, and I thought they were easy to follow and had lots of good information (I even learned some new/correct techniques).
  11. I have had 3 indoor male cats over the years and none of them peed outside of the litter box. My first male cat learned to go to the door and meow when he needed to go to the restroom and as soon as his business was done he would come back to the door and scratch to be let in. There was someone at home all the time, so we never had a litterbox with him. My second cat came to us declawed and had problems with holding his stool because of that procedure... he eventually developed a megacolon and a bad attitude (I think from not feeling well most of the time). The vet says it is not uncommon for them to hold their stool after a declawing since the pain in their feet keep them from wanting to dig in the litter box. He eventually passed away from cancer. Our third male cat is great! We rescued him and his sister from a shelter when they were about 5-6 months old and they are SOOOOOO sweet! They are not declawed, we use "softpaws" claw covers and they do fine. These two cats have the best attitude and are very affectionate. They have always used the litterbox without any problems (we have had them 2 years and no accidents yet).
