  1. We used to paint my son and grandson's nails when they were toddlers/pre-schoolers. They would see my teenaged daughters painting their nails and wanted theirs done too. We thought it was cute and didn't really care what anyone else might think.

(The following paragraph is rhetorical - if reflects my feelings, not my logic.) But I feel like something must have gone wrong:  Homeschooling was supposed to inoculate my kids against adolescent misbehaviors, right? 😉  Homeschooling was supposed to make them get along with each other better, be more responsible, have mature conversations with grown-ups, develop a life-long love of learning, etc., etc., etc.  I read all the right parenting and homeschooling books.  Isn't this what they promised me?  How come some moms can make it work when I can't?  Do all the moms of the high school boards parent/teach with an iron fist?  (That would not fit me.)

Some kids are just harder than others. I have ten children that I have homeschooled. Some were great homeschool (and later public school) success stories...others not so much. Same Mom, same homeschool style, and in some cases even the same curriculum resulted in totally different outcomes.

  3. Guest Hollow has some elementary science courses. You can see the books they use without purchasing anything. Also look at Build Your Library, Beautiful Feet Books, Sonlight, Simply Charlotte Mason, and Torchlight. They all have their booklists on their websites. I used to use Tapestry of Grace booklists but the last time I was at their website it was difficult to navigate.

There's also Outstanding Science Tradebooks for Students K-12

Those are the resources I would use to find books. I would also just browse my library and pick up whatever looks good. I also like to buy books from Book Outlet. They regularly have 20% off sales and their selection is always changing. I just buy whatever looks good that is under $5. I have gotten a lot of good books this way.

"I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."

  5. From NPR about booster shots:

"Any available vaccine should first go to people around the world who are at high risk of hospitalization and deaths, said Dr. Michael Ryan of the WHO. 'If we think about this in terms of an analogy, we're planning to hand out extra life jackets to people who already have life jackets, while we're leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket.'"

I'm not sure that those who have evaded vaccinations w/o cause and extended the deaths and economic disruptions by their behavior have any clue the wrath they are in for is this all goes south--as seems likely.

Please enlighten me. What do you expect to happen to those who refuse the vaccine?

Vermont has multiple counties in the substantial to high risk levels now. Stores are starting to require masks again regardless of vaccination status. And, school starts back in a couple of weeks and most of the kids I work with aren't old enough to be vaccinated. This doesn't feel good.

And Vermont has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country. 😟

People are acting like a mandated vaccine is a brand new thing but come on. We're all parents here. How many times have we provided information about our kid's vaccine records? I keep a copy in our safe.

I had to get the MMR when I was in grad school. The university required it and my mother couldn't find the records proving that I'd had it so I got it again.

There are laws requiring some healthcare workers to be vaccinated. It's like this is brand new information for people. (I wish I could add the Phoebe "this is brand new information!" meme)

The difference is that the Covid vaccines are not fully approved. They have Emergency use Authorization. Because of that:

"FDA must ensure that recipients of the vaccine under an EUA are informed, to the extent practicable given the applicable circumstances, that FDA has authorized the emergency use of the vaccine, of the known and potential benefits and risks, the extent to which such benefits and risks are unknown, that they have the option to accept or refuse the vaccine, and of any available alternatives to the product." https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/emergency-use-authorization-vaccines-explained

So we have employers requiring vaccines that the FDA says recipients must have the option to refuse.

  9. Related to spread by the vaccinated I found this https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7031e2.htm?s_cid=mm7031e2_w

"...Ct values obtained with SARS-CoV-2 qualitative RT-PCR diagnostic tests might provide a crude correlation to the amount of virus present in a sample and can also be affected by factors other than viral load.††† Although the assay used in this investigation was not validated to provide quantitative results, there was no significant difference between the Ct values of samples collected from breakthrough cases and the other cases. This might mean that the viral load of vaccinated and unvaccinated persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 is also similar. However, microbiological studies are required to confirm these findings."

I wasn't going to be back on this thread because I want to stay positive, so I am not answering any other questions, but could not resist this one.

I  felt comfortable singing when our positivity was 2 percent and cases were very low. But now our numbers are up to 40 with a positivity of 24 percent. Only 1/3 of our population is vaccinated. Singing is a high risk activity with a HIGH method of transmission. The CMDA has been recommending that singing not be done in churches. Not sure if that is their current stance, though I am guessing with the higher rates it is.

Vaccinated people can get it and can spread it, even when asymptomatic. Choir could be another superspreader event. And it can be serious for people that have been vaccinated, just look at the woman who posted on the other thread. She nearly died. And moderate Covid may still be too much for some people. I do not want to contribute to their deaths. I am one of the younger members of the choir and I am in my mid to late fifties. Nope, will not kill some of those wonderful people.

Ok, back to happy movies. 🙂

First I want to say that I respect your choices so I am not trying to convince you to change your mind.

BUT I do wonder what the statistical possibility is for asymptomatic spread by the vaccinated? My educated guess is that it is very small.  Do we even have any proof that Covid has been spread by the vaccinated?

AND if others are choosing to participate in the choir anyway, does your participation increase their risk in any meaningful way?

Just some things to think about.

Ok, have you looked at the Louisiana numbers.  All of their beds are full.

"Children being treated in hospitals are tested for SARS-CoV-2, but many who test positive never develop COVID-19 symptoms, leading to overestimates of disease severity, a study found."

Which is the reason I got it. I am not really concerned for myself. I just don't want to pass it onto anyone else. So the fact that I can now is really disappointing and means that once again, I can't do anything I love to do. I had planned to join choir this month after being out of it for 18 months.  ( I sang for 40 years before that.) Lots of other stuff. Back to being a hermit.

Why? Why cant you join choir? Why do you have to be a hermit? If you are vaccinated, you are protected from severe disease. If other people are vaccinated, they are also protected. Those who chose not to get vaccinated chose to take that risk so you have no obligation to protect them. So go out and live your life!

Let us wait about 5 years and see. Without vaccinations, this surge is going to be much more deadly.

What is your evidence for this? So far (at least in the US) each surge has been less deadly than the first.

We really do not know how bad it was in India, Russia or China or many, many other places in the world.

True. Which means that it may have not been as bad as the media has portrayed it to be.

It will keep mutating since people can get it more than once and after they are vaccinated.

Studies have been done that show that infection provides robust immunity. Yes, vaccinated people are getting it, but we don't know how common that is. Also, we don't know how many of those people are older or otherwise immunocompromised.

  14. There are so many things that can cause or contribute to depression. You need a really good doctor who will leave no stone unturned. Also a naturopathic doctor might be helpful. There are a lot of nutritional things that can contribute to depression and regular doctors are not educated about such things. If that doesn't help find a different psychiatrist. It is common to have to try different meds and it can take time and a lot of trial and error. Also sleep is very important. If something is interfering with you getting quality sleep that can cause or contribute to depression.

And you aren't doing anything wrong.

  15. One thing you might want to consider is her diet. My son gets very grumpy and hard to deal with when he eats certain food. Certain foods also spike his anxiety. One of the things he is sensitive to is annato. It is in yellow cheese and a lot of snack foods and ice cream. He is sensitive to other food additives as well. We have had a lot of improvement in behavior after eliminating processed food and sugar.

I don't just want to punish a kid.  She's clearly stressed out, by the baby, and the move, and the puberty, and the pandemic.  I'd love to find ways to make her actually feel better.  I'm fine with using exclusion once in a while as a discipline tool for major misbehavior.  I'm not fine with using it constantly.

But if you do use it constantly then she will very likely change her behavior. Also, you don't necessarily have to be punitive. You can just pull her aside and say something like "I can see you are having a hard time getting along with the other kids right now. I'd like you to come help me with (insert something she can help you with.)" Or you can give her some options of things she can do by herself for a bit.

It's verbal stuff.  There's been some physical aggression, and that I know how to handle, but most of the time she's just saying mean things.  Yesterday, she told my youngest that he was a stupid cry baby, and that his brother (my middle son who died) was a stupid cry baby too.

I simply wouldn't tolerate name calling or other verbal abuse. I would discipline her for it just as you would for hitting. And if the other kids are instigating then I would discipline them as well.

  18. I would either find a way to to homeschool or send her to a different school. If she stays in school she should be tested for a learning disability. The fact that she is 7 and the teacher thinks she needs to be held back is evidence that there might be something wrong and she might benefit from having an IEP. In my experience private schools do not do a very good job of meeting the needs of kids with learning challenges. She might be better off in public school.

  19. Seems to me that you don't need your aunt's permission. Grandma is not living in your Aunt's house, Grandma is renting rooms from her. So as long as the plan is for you to stay in Grandma's part of the house and Grandma has invited you I see no problem.

  20. Christian Light is designed for the student to be as independent as possible. It is more teacher intensive for the younger grades. Obviously a 6 year old can't do everything independently. Other curriculum that I know of that a child can do mostly independently:

    Developmental Mathematics

    Explode the Code

Rod and Staff English Grammar (This is not designed to be used independently but I have used it that way.)

    Rod and Staff Spelling

All of JacKris Publishing Language Arts: Growing with Grammar, Soaring with Spelling, Winning with Writing, Digging into Diagramming
