  1. :iagree: supplement. I feel your pain, Math was a big struggle here too.:grouphug: We are a couple of years behind you, but we are finding TT with LOF to be a good mix. They seem to compliment each other well. We are still in the elementary series, but the thing I like about Fred is that it ties into other subjects, gives the answer to the "why do I need to learn this?" question. I remember being a kid struggling with Math. One thing was I just did not see any point to it. Best of luck Best of luck.
  2. If your ds is around the third grade level of spelling, Phonetic Zoo is an option. It is a different type of spelling program. Here is my review to see if it is an option for you. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=397302
  3. Roast Chicken with Roast Potato and veggies. Chili with rice Nice Weather? BBQ, kebabs are good. Caprese salad, tomato, basil, and mozzarella. Think whole foods, and check what you are adding (Spice mixes, vinegars, soy sauce etc....) One of our favorite meals we serve guests (and they don't even realize it is GF) Chicken Korma over rice with peas and carrots. Ice cream and berries for dessert.
  4. I am still pretty new to it myself, but I have used corn starch to thicken and it works well. I even used it to make a roux to start white sauce for mac and cheese and cauliflower cheese and that has worked. Just a word of warning, gluten free rice hotdog buns that live on the shelf, not frozen....Stay far away! (GF brownies from the freezer, YUMMY)
  5. Yes, there is a lesson. He goes through it with his daughter. I would e-mail the company, they might send you a digital copy. So far I have found them to be spendy up front, but incredibly helpful and free with supporting information. We have now done 3 weeks in a row of 5 days a week and it is just chugging along. No big surprises or road bumps. My son still brings every 100% paper to me with a beaming smile on his face. He is gaining so much confidence. I am thrilled with this program. Next time finances allow, I think I am going to buy their memorization program for dd5. It uses the same principal as PZ(the CD)
  6. We have both, but I haven't formally matched them up.
  7. My ds 10 really likes the horrible histories, never really got into the science or geography ones. Just something to look at, have you looked at Max Axiom?
  8. Not for Beast or LOF, but he gives discounts and arranges free international shipping from the UK, and I like to support smaller companies. He always ships for free too.(for the US stuff as well)
  9.:party: I can't wait. I have already told Horrible Ray I want it, and he is going to send it out as soon as he gets it. (I hope they get it to businesses quickly!)
  10.:lol::lol: sounds like one of the bumper stickers my mom kept threatening to put on her car when I was in High School "Hire a teenager while they still know it all."
  11. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I am praying this is a blessing in disguise and leads you to answers and healing.
  12. Phonetic Zoo is a hit here. It is not a workbook, but it is almost completely independent. No extras, just spell the words to mastery. Here is my review if you want to look to see if it might work for you. My son is a 5th grader, http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=397302
  13. :grouphug::grouphug: I think a good talk about new traditions would be good, and write them down, this way you won't be blindsided again next year. It sounds like you want flowers, but don't want flowers. Just a thought, but what about changing it to a potted plant. Something that is still living, with roots. Dh will sometimes surprise me with chocolates or something on our anniversary, but for the most part we don't go for the surprise lavish on our anniversary. It some ways it is setting each other up to fail if the other doesn't live up to the expectation (I hope I said that right) We talk about it and get something together for us as a couple. It is not a me and him day, but an us day, so we plan it together. It might be something to think of moving forward.
  14. Life of Fred! Totally independent. My son loves it. Beast Academy is great, he needs more help with it, it is much more of a 2nd curriculum. Horrible Ray has them, and I think there are some Horrible Maths books on his site. We haven't tried those yet.
  15. We have the Costco set too. I only have the world map up at the moment. One thing I have just corrected, I used to have the map high on the wall, perfect for me, I have just moved the map down low where it is at eye level for the kids. BIG difference:D We are trying a new(for us) curriculum this year. Mapping the world by heart. I think that will really help with the kids geography.
  16. We did book 1 of Adventures in our 3rd grade year. My husband really likes it, and he is a phd chemist in drug discovery. He is pretty fussy about the science we use. We also used her recommendation for physics last year. We got our supplies from home science tools. We got this kit It was fun, and at the younger grades you don't want to teach them the wrong information, but the most important thing is for them to think science is fun, not hard or boring. We got a real lab book. DS dictated to me, and then he drew pictures underneath of what he did. We kept it relaxed, I read through the chapter with him, we looked things up together, did the experiment and then the lab book. Easy peasy and chill. Now this next year.....
  17. We were having a lot of these problems. I outsourced and got him a tutor. Someone from the Handwriting without tears site. It has been a dream. He does his handwriting for her, and she will correct and be the picky one. I now just have the rule that his handwriting has to be readable and contain actual letters in the alphabet. Taking the stress off and compartmentalizing has led to improved handwriting. I also just had to accept that he is never going to have beautiful handwriting. We are just shooting for legible and neat now.
  18. I got the one book to start, then I ordered 2 more, another order of 2 more, THEN I got the other 5. Start slow. My ds LOVES it. LOF is what he GETS to do if he finishes everything else. He also likes Beast Academy, and that is more challenging, and he classifies Beast Academy as Math Work. WOrk he enjoys, but work. LOF is his treat.
