  1. Ellen, I know exactly what you mean. I still have one at home but she is independent, taking classes at a nearby university and has a part time job. I wonder What do I do now? Get a job? Find a hobby? I haven't been in the working world for 20 years and I'm scared to go back out there, plus, I am hesitant to turn my life over to a job after dictating my own schedule for so long. I also don't have friends I talk to everyday so my contact with people, besides my husband, is slim unless I make an effort to make it happen. I've always had my kids to keep me busy. I wouldn't trade our homeschooling years for anything. They are precious to me. But during those years I never thought how lost I would be when it's all over. I know this happens to all empty nesters, but this is not fun!
  2. Hello everyone, It has been eons since I've been on the forums. We followed the Well Trained Mind for the majority of our homeschooling from K-8th, but when we hit the high school years my kids started doing dual credit classes and I found myself less involved in their schooling. Well, I now have one sophomore in college and a senior in high school this year. I don't know about you guys, but this is a really hard adjustment to make in my life. My whole world has been homeschooling and caring for kids for the past 20 years and now I really don't know what to do in this next phase of life that is looming ahead of me. How have you handled this transition and does it get any easier letting go and moving forward? Thanks for listening, Trina
  3. I bought this a couple of years ago, and I think a new edition has been released since then. In the version we have the instruction book is full of typos. This really distracted my son and undermined his confidence in the program. He has only watched the SAT Overview DVD so far, and it was okay. The DVD production quality leaves a lot to be desired. My son prefers to prepare using the PSAT practice books we have, so I'll probably ditch the program for now. I can say I'm not overly impressed considering the price I paid for the program. HTH, Trina
  4. This is what my ds will be covering next year. I'm still wondering how to get it all done and remain sane. Math: NEM 3 Literature: TOG Redesign Year 2 Writing: TOG Redesign Year 2 English: Editor in Chief, Abeka Grammar & Composition III, Spelling Power Vocabulary From Classical Roots Traditional Logic I SOS Spanish I Henle Latin I History: TOG Redesign Year 2 Science: Apologia Biology I Trina
  5. for a job well done. Enjoy the festivities and best of luck to your daughter at Hillsdale! Trina
  6. I agree with you about going slowly. I think it takes time for the brain to really wrap itself around many concepts in math & science. Those are two subjects that we never rush through. If it takes more time to sink in, we slow down and let it marinate. Good luck in your physics studies! Trina
  7. I used Classic for a few years, and am currently using year 2 Redesign. I like Redesign better because I like the way it is organized. I think it's easier to find things. But, like I said, that's just me. The Classic is great too. Trina
  8. interesting and fun to learn when you're older. Sometimes I think we learn everything at too young of an age. Before we have any life under our belt to really appreciate or understand what we're learning. I hope that keeping my brain active will help in old age too. Good luck in your learning endeavors, Trina
  9. We are going into Apologia Biology next year for 9th grade. Will something terrible happen if my ds doesn't finish the last 3 chapters of Apologia Physical Science? I hear the summer calling to me to finish up and take a break before we start our hectic 9th grade schedule next year. Would someone help me get the guilt monkey off my back? Thanks for listening, Trina
  10. and you can look at each week's assignments and decide what assignments you want you daughter to do. I usually decide what history reading we're going to do and then check to see if my library has the books suggested. If they don't, I decide if the book is important enough to purchase. If it is a book that we will use a lot, or one that is just really good and would be hard to substitute, I usually do purchase it. If it is used only one or two weeks and I think I can substitute, I may try to find something else at the library that will suffice. If you are going to do TOG literature, church history, or philosophy you would need to do the same for those subjects. There is also Writing Aids, which is a great resource to have if you are going to use the TOG writing element and a Map Aids cd-rom and an evaluations cd-rom. These last three things do not have to be purchased, but they make my life much easier. What it really comes down to is that you have to look over the curriculum and decide what you want to cover, and which books are important enough to be purchased. I wish I could just list everything out for you, but it really is different for each person. Good luck, I'm not sure this helped at all, but I hope it did. Trina
  11. and I did break them up over two days. The problems take a long time to solve, and a lot of them have multiple questions to answer per problem. I think the review is very important, and we usually do the first 3 one after the other. I am going to schedule 1D and 1E a couple of weeks from now to refresh his memory. Doing all of them, 1A through 1E, one right after another is tedious for him. HTH, Trina
  12. but you have to log in as a member for those forums to come up. I just did that and they were all still there. We have used Singapore from 1st grade, so I can't speak as to what it is like to transition to it from another program. I can say that it has been a great program for us, and I am not a "mathy" person. I use the solutions manuals all the time, and I find them to be very detailed and helpful in solving problems. We are in NEM 2 right now, and I honestly never thought I would make it this far. It has not been as difficult as I thought it was going to be. I do look at all the explanations with my son and help him (with the solutions manual) to solve anything he can't get. I have learned so much. I wish I had learned the Singapore way the first time around. I may have actually gotten math. We are going into NEM 3 next year and there being no solutions manual does make me nervous. Jenny on the Singapore Math forums has said that she will help out with any problems, I just hope she doesn't regret that when I am bugging her everyday!! It does make me feel better to hear Nan in Mass say that NEM 3 is easier than NEM 2. Thanks Nan, that made my day! Good luck with your decision. I know this is a hard one to make. Trina
  13. If you hadn't just completed through the 1800's, I would say to start with Redesign Year 2. Since you did, I would start with Redesign 3 and put the ancients literature reading off for a couple of years so he may enjoy it more. I would definitely stick with a year that is redesign and not classic. I love the redesign because it is so much easier to use than the classic, in my opinion, especially for the high school years. Trina
  14. next year will be our first year for rhetoric. I am excited and scared at the same time! Karen, do you read the literature your kids are reading, or do you use the teachers notes to discuss with them? As for the government, philosophy and art electives, how many high school credits do those count for each year? Thanks Karen, and everyone else, I was going to ask this same question and your responses have been incredibly helpful. Trina
  15. Hi everyone, We just got SOS Spanish 1 and so far I really like it. I was wondering how long you take to do one lesson. Do you break it out over a few days and spend some days just working on vocabulary? Do you know how many lessons are on the cd rom? Is this a one year high school course that counts as 1 language credit? So many questions!! Thanks, Trina
  16. on Rainbow resource. Does anyone know the isbn? Are they discontinuing the older version to replace it with the 2007 version? Thanks.
  17. Do I need the teacher's manual or any other cd's. This is not the powerglide one, is that right? Thanks again, I seem to have a million questions right now!!! Trina
  18. Do you have to have one cd per child, or can they share? Do you do the cd as well so you know what is going on when help is needed? Thanks, Trina
  19. I just recently started using the writing component of TOG. How do you feel this compares with IEW. I would like to improve my 8th grader's writing skills, and might continue to use it in high school. Has anyone had success following the redesigned TOG writing along with writing aids? TIA, Trina
  20. I am using TOG for high school and I know that it has literature built in, but I was wondering what people thought about LLATL gold books for American and British Lit. My ds will be in 9th grade next year and I'm not sure if I should just do the TOG lit, or if I should use something different, or supplement. I am so glad all of you on this board are willing to share your wisdom, I have been homeschooling for 9 years, but with high school starting, I feel I have so much to learn! Thanks, Trina
  21. Thanks for the all the information! I noticed that a lot of you are using Henle with younger students. My ds will be in 9th grade next year. Is Henle suitable for that grade level, and would we do all of Henle I to count as one year's Latin credit? TIA, Trina
  22. Henle seems to be a very popular Latin course. I am wondering how easy it is to do after doing LCI and LCII with the DVD sets? Did you find it hard to do the Henle without someone on DVD to help out with explanations and pronunciation? Is it difficult to figure out the pronunciation of the words without a CD? This seems to get the best reviews for an easy to follow Latin course that can be taught by someone who is not proficient in Latin (and I am most definitely not!) If Henle did work for you, I would love to know why. If it didn't, why not, and what did you use instead? Thanks, Trina
  23. Thanks for the encouragement you guys. I think I will at least give it a try. Between Jenny at singapore math and all of you wonderful ladies on this board, hopefully I can muddle through. If I have any hair left (or at least any that isn't gray) at the end of high school, it will be a miracle! Trina
  24. I am doing NEM 2 with my ds right now, and he has done very well with NEM 1 and NEM 2. I am getting very nervous about using NEM 3 with no solutions manual. I have been able to explain everything so far with the help of the solutions manual, but not having that to fall back on scares me to death. My question is, have any of you successfully used NEM 3 with no solutions manual when math is not your strong suit? If I were to switch after NEM 2, what should I use? Something with solutions/dvd help would be nice, but I still want it to be challenging for him. He will be sad to give up the NEM, he really likes it. Also, is it confusing to switch to something different after using Singapore? Thanks, Trina
