  1. We switched over to CLE Language Arts last week. It's been a great fit for my almost 10 year old 4th grader. I think he needs more writing though. I'm not a fan of WWE. Any other suggestions for a not heavy writing supplement to do with CLE? I was thinking maybe Daily 6 Trait Writing...not sure.
  2. I have mixed feelings on this decision. As the mother of a Boy Scout, the time he spent with his scout brothers hiking, camping, and learning outdoor skills was invaluable. I feel that the single gender troop was invaluable for my son. However, as the mother of a 15 year old girl who didn’t want to joint Girl Scouts, but really wanted to be a Boy Scout, I’m excited about what this could open up for her. She was thrilled when she was old enough to join Venturing. I only hope that they allow the 11-17 year old program to be single gender troops and don’t require the groups to be mixed.
  3. I love having older teens come tot! No age limit!!
  4. I just subscribed to splash math, an app for my iPad. It's 9.99 a month, and worth every penny. They have a free week trial. If you want free games, go to the Math Mammoth website and look at the samples of the light blue series books. They have lists of online games divided up by topic in each grade level book.
  5. LOL, I have a brand new 4th grade BJU English workbook in my garage and I'm about ready to toss TGAATB and go get that BJU book out of my bins. I'm 100% sure that I'm done with The Good and the Beautiful though. After typing my response last night, I realized that I'm just plain old not happy with it, and I need to switch him now. Which do you think is more thorough, BJU or Christian Light? oddly enough, those were the two I was trying to decide between.
  6. I'm using level 3 with my 4th grader. I'm on the fence. I want to like it, but it doesn't feel very smooth. I feel like we are jumping all over the place with it and I'm not sure I love it. The spelling is ok, but I don't like having to keep testing him on words to figure out which words he knows and doesn't know. He seems to know how to spell most of them, so it takes forever to find ones he doesn't know. I'll probably give it another week or two before I decide if we will continue or not.
  7. I don't know about New York, but in California, a living trust protected all of my MIL's assets after she passed away and we inherited a substantial amount of money, tax free.
  8. I was 1 day too slow on it in July. I was so bummed.
  9. I'm in San Diego. Dual enrollment is for community colleges. Students in their Junior or Senior year can take two classes per semester for free at City/Miramar/Mesa or Grossmont/Cuyamaca. If your student signs up for more than one cc "system" they could potentially take more classes. The only cc's that allows 10th graders are Palomar and Mira Costa, they are far and you have to get professor approval. But several friends have done it, works well for online classes. Not sure about what happens with kids who enroll in a homeschool charter who are from another state. My kids are with Dehesa. It's a solid WASC accredited program with a-g courses. As scar as colleges go, I have a kiddo at sdsu. He hates it lol, too big he says. It's tough to get in, the year he started, they only took 3% of applicants. Many students go to community college first and then get into a CSU from there. You're guaranteed a spot at one of them if you do the transferable degree at a local cc. Our community colleges are great. I have a kiddo at Grossmont College. Feel free to message me if you have more questions.
  10. Yup, they did hat to me with my first baby. My placenta came put in pieces, and my obgyn had to do digging for the pieces that didn't come out. She was up to her bicep, ugh! Most painful part of my whole delivery, and I didn't have an epidural. I sure wanted one for that part!!
  11. Uou let him audition, hoping he'd fail and be discouraged from being at that ballet school. But it backfired on you. Now you have to follow through and let him do it.
  12. It's not even a regular split, it's an over split- over 180 degrees. They are holding her front leg off the ground, and I think the back leg too. Oversplits are really hard to get for most people, it's not common. I read somewhere that she was injured from this. I listened to the radio yesterday and they played just the audio and it's was horrifying.
  13. Thanks guys! Maybe I'll avoid the debate deals!
  14. I know this is the time of year when there are crazy school supply sales, and sometimes we get awesome paper sales. Has anyone seen a good paper sale?
  15. I was looking at Notgrass for World History this year. I felt like it was too much Bible and not enough world history. Any other suggestions for similar format, but maybe less Bible or secular?
  16. What curriculum is this? I'm trying to add states and capitols to our schedule this year.
  17. I've been asked to teach a class of k/1 kiddos and it needs to be a social studies class. Any suggestions for curriculum? I was thinking maybe an around the world focus? Any other ideas? I've never taught k/1 social studies in a group setting before.
  18. Hmmmm. I think he's bored because it comes to so easy to him. But he isn't flying through the CLE lessons because he hates doing so much work. That's a good idea to be working on more than one chapter at a time. I may try that.
  19. My dd will be 4th grade in a few weeks. He has a very "mathy" mind and picks up concepts quickly. He's been doing CLE math for 2 years and it's really starting to bog us down. I initially liked the constant review, but he's bored and complains that it's too much. I was thinking of switching to Math Mammoth, and a mastery approach. How do you keep up older skills with programs like Math Mammoth? Anyone switch from CLE before?
  20. We were struggling financially when our oldest was applying for colleges and taking the ACT. Many colleges have a fee waiver for thei applications for low income families. He was also able to take the ACT for free. There's a fee waiver for that too.
  21. I want to see pictures of the emergency box, everything sounds so cute!
  22. https://www.amazon.com/Laena-West/e/B074JMNM7B/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1 Oh my gosh you guys. I ordered an awesome field trip journal that came yesterday!!! It's one in a series, I ordered the 7th-12th grade level. My daughter flipped when she saw it. She's super excited to use it this year. They were written by a homeschool mom, and are fantastic!! I'm so excited to have a journal specifically for older students. It's the perfect mix of academic questions, career stuff, drawing/doodling etc. I reviewed it on Amazon and did a video that I'll post shortly. I'm going to order one for my 4th grader too!!!
  23. We've used the middle school modules of science fusion. My dd and I loved it. It's a textbook and workbook in one, so it's full color and you write in it. I liked that she could pick the modules that she thought sounded interesting. I think we completed 3-4 per year. When you buy the modules, you are given a paper code to sign up for the website. The teachers manual is on there. The website is challenging to navigate, it took some time to figure it out. Once I did though, it was great! There are lesson videos, online labs, quizzes, etc... It was worth taking the time to figure it out.
