  1. Thanks deerforest Do you know if the Learning coach guides have the answers to the student sheets/guides? The online sample I looked at seemed like it didn't.
  2. My oldest used this book and I am considering using it with my youngest next year for 7th grade. I like the idea of having student pages but am confused about the teacher pages. Are they now called "Learning Coach Guides" or are these different? Should I stick with the books called teacher guides? I really don't want to spend much $$ on them and am trying to weed through it all on Amazon. Also, is there a difference between "student" pages" and a "student guide"?
  3. I own Lial's and Foerster's Algebra, along with MWB teaching, but am considering buying CLE for DS #3 for next year. Having been through Foerster's with my other two, I know this kid will be frustrated with it. I also think the Lial's book is not right for him either (too busy). I cannot believe I am going to buy another Algebra, but he has used CLE since 5th grade, and I see it as working the best as far as user friendliness and review. I also decided to wait till ninth grade, or maybe this summer after 8th, to start. I saw so many people here start Algebra in 7th/ 8th that it influenced me to do that with my older two, and for some students that is just too early. I ended up having to repeat much of it with both of them. My 2 cents: I would avoid TT for Algebra because it just doesn't force the student to show their work or learn how to set up equations on their own. I used/am using TT for Alg 2 and Pre-Calc and I hate the multiple choice answers. It is so easy for the student to look at the choices and guess the answer. If I had the $$ and time I would switch.
  4. I understand that. DS came home from college, and I know he took unscented laundry soap and no softener, but he and everything he owned stunk like fabric softener when he returned at Christmas. I couldn't even stand going in his room. He became nose-blind to it.
  5. I just got my word yesterday 2016 - Refreshed 2017 - Restoration
  6. My 11yo says they could do this: https://scratch.mit.edu/
  7. Ds said he saw a kid using a calculator on the no calculator portion. That irritates me. He also said he thought the no calculator portion was harder than last year.
  8. A coworker once told my husband that we must homeschool because we don't want to pay school taxes.
  9. We had an adopted college kid for awhile. He actually is my husband's cousin. It was all about the food. We fed him. He is now a nurse and we use him for free health info.
  10. DS finally took the Compass placement test today. Based on his score, they said he could take the College Algebra, Trig, or Technical Calculus 1. Ds is leaning toward taking trig. for review.
  11. So I am replying to my own topic. I just bought the lesson plan to the Memoria Literature, and after looking at how it is scheduled, it seems much more doable to me. I think we may have to read the stories together, but at least now I can see the flow of the program. I guess I will start novel hunting for him.
  12. My 8th grade ds has never been a reader. I occasionally switch off paragraphs with him as he reads science and math books noticing he sometimes says the wrong word (what instead of that) and he doesn't slow down to force correctly pronouncing hard words. He was taught phonics but doesn't try to apply them. So I am literature hunting this year. He did about 2/3 of Sonlight Core H last year, but complained about the book reading. I read many of the readers aloud because I like them too. He has a hard time following many stories. He also did lightning lit 7 last year, but he followed along as he listened to the recorded story. Because he is studying CLE American History, I bought Memoria Press Poetry and Short Stories American Literature. I really like the idea of it, but the reader is so black and white with barely any space especially for the first few stories. I was going to use this in conjunction with some American novels. I am second guessing myself that maybe I should use something like a lit book (which I never thought I would use for this grade) like BJU for shorter passages and more interesting pages. I am dedicating an hour of my school day to this lit. time with him, but my goal is for him to be independently comprehending his reading. Does anyone else have a child like this? What has worked for you? Also I would love to hear how the Memoria Press Lit worked if you have used it. Thanks, Michelle
  13. I used it with my senior last year, but my bar may not be as high as some here. We also did additional literature readings without extensive analysis.
  14. We got the white one last year at Walmart with the $88 special. DS needed one to take to college so he got the blue one through the Target special last night. We haven't picked it up yet, but I'm excited he got a sale price.
  15. Just the 8th grader. I considered keeping them together, but I think my oldest needs something of his own and I wanted him to have a concentrated study of American history before high-school. Those two did 3/4 of Sonlight Core H together last year and there was too much bickering for this momma. I am considering having my 6th grader do VP history (modern) online if it goes on sale. If not, we will finish Core H.
  16. He looked at the practice tests yesterday to see what they cover. He plans to take it next week at the college.
  17. Ds was told by the math department to go take the placement test. He looked over the Compass practice math tests online and didn't see anything that stumped him. If anything, this experience has been a good introduction to ds to be in charge of his education and what classes he will be taking.
  18. I really appreciate all the replies. Ds did write the math department concerning a placement test. If that doesn't happen, he has decided to go with college algebra. What do high-school students take in high school to go directly to college calculus? I am curious because some of the other students he registered with were doing that. This a mere curiosity because his particular major does recommend starting with College Algebra, so he wouldn't be behind even if he did take that course his first semester. The math sequence for his major is: college algebra, trig, technical calc 1 & 2, and differential equations.
  19. I did not realize college algebra was different from Algebra 2. His SAT math was a 610 (I think). After reading this, I think maybe he should stay put unless he can somehow test out of it.
  20. Here is the course description: MATH 1033 - College Algebra This course includes topics such as polynomials, radicals, exponents, coordinate geometry, rational expressions and equations, and solutions to linear and quadratic equations. Students are introduced to the concept of functions and their graphs. Additional topics may include conic sections, matrices, variation, and nonlinear inequalities. Emphasis will be placed on problem solving. A graphing calculator is required. Students cannot receive credit for MATH 1033 if they have credit for MATH 1054. Students cannot receive credit for MATH 1033 if they have credit for MATH 1063, MATH 1084, or any course for which MATH 1063 or MATH 1084 are prerequisites. A grade of C or better is required to take Math 2043, College Trigonometry. 3.000 Credit hours
