  1. Hello, We just moved to SC and I am trying to understand the homeschool laws. We have had a bit of interaction with the school because our kids have previously played sports with public schools with no problem and we thought it would be the same here but apparently not. I would like an opinion on homeschooling in SC from a homeschooler and not the public schools which is the only place I have been able to get information at this point. I have left a message with one of the homeschooing groups but they have not called me back. Thank you so much for your input. Thanks, Tina
  2. Hi, School started for them on July 20 they will be done with their first quarter this week. The end of the semester is before the Christmas break. I don't know if that will change your previous comments. You've given me lots to think about and I might consider pulling them now since they have a 2 week break starting next week however I have three classes left until I'm done with my degree so I kind of wanted to wait until I was closer to being done and I won't be able to order curriculum for at least a month due to our financial situation right now both of those reasons are my main reasons for waiting. Thanks for your advice Tina
  3. Hello, A little background, we homeschooled all four of our kids up to 2008 when we decided to put them in school for various reasons, our oldest was in the 9th grade. They have appeased their curiosity and I'm just about done with my degree (Jan) and I am tired of the attitudes and boy conversations so my intent is to pull them out of school when the semester is over (they want me to do it today but I don't have any curriculum). My question is, my oldest will be in the middle of her junior year when I pull them out, is this too late to pull her out and put effort into homeschooling her the rest of high school? Has anyone else pulled a child out during their junior year? Would it be better to pull her out sooner rather than waiting until the semester is over? She would prefer to stay in school but she's not upset over me taking her out either when I told her it was my decision and not hers. I'm trying to figure the logistics of it academically and with record keeping because she really wants to go to an out of state college (not sure if it will happen $$) but I don't want to be the one that hinders her in that possibility. Any thoughts, tips, or suggestions? Thanks Tina
  4. Sorry it took so long to respond to your question about trucks, we are going with Penske because they were about $400 less than UHaul. We are still looking at about $3000 to move with the truck, gas & hotel. For those of you that live in the Mesa, Gilbert area I was wondering if Queen Creek is a decent place to live? Thanks Tina
  5. Thanks for the information on the science courses, I knew about needing her math and science to be rigorous which is why I asked about the science, math I'm more familiar with. She already excels in English so I'm not to worried about that subject. Where would you find A.P courses in any subject; math, science, english? Thanks Tina
  6. What science programs would be good for someone who wants to enter into a science field in college? Also How many would consider a good microscope a necessity in this instance? Thanks Tina
  7. I have never moved out of state before and if any of you have any tips that would help I would appreciate it. We will be moving to an area outside of Mesa not sure exactly where yet but a friend suggested Gilbert. We are all looking forward to the move so that is more than half of the battle I am sure. Are any of you in AZ or familiar with their homeschooling laws? I did go to the HSLDA site and it seemed pretty lax as far as regulations. What do I need to worry about getting done for this school year, because we will be moving at the end of Aug so I won't have much time to find out the information and do what needs to be done. Also we have been told that AZ school districts have charter schools, is this a workable situation or are they designed more for trouble students with social workers and counselors? Thanks for all your help. Tina
  8. Hello, We have actually homeschooled all along and we were going to put her in high school but due to changes and other situations she will be homeschooled and I haven't looked into homeschooling high school at all. We have been using Calvert the last couple of years however I am open to any tips, suggestions, books, curriculum, etc. anything to get me started on the high school track. :bigear: Thanks Tina
  9. Hello, I haven't posted in a couple of years but this was the first place I thought of when I needed objective advice from other homeschoolers. I homeschool an 8th, 6th, 5th and 4th grader using Calvert through a charter school. I am wondering at what point do you decide to put your children in school because you need to get a job so you can pay your bills. We are not talking cc bills or bills for things we don't need (tv is the only thing that falls in this category and shutting it off would not help our situation). We have basic bills, braces, etc for four growing kids. We have two cars, one is an SUV, the other one just died on us and we were really dependent on it because my husband works about 1hr away and this car got better gas mileage than the SUV. We also need two cars as our kids play soccer and many times we have to go in opposite directions at the same time. Our credit is such that we can't get a loan for another car and the house and car loan we do have are high interest. My husband does not want to sell the house or make any changes that might help alleviate any of our financial distress. He doesn't want to put the kids in school so I can work either. I have normally been the one to say we are homeschooling no matter what but we have bills going to collection and we can't pay our all of our bills each month. As a christian where do you draw a line between what's good for your children and how to deal with your finances? Thanks for listening, I needed to vent to people who would understand the homeschooling aspect and be objective in their advice. Tina
