  1. One of mine might be on that show. I just organized and dumped enough stuff to make a little space for an office in what used to be their room (remember the 3.3K apartment 3 miles down the road?). So much stuff from the streets! So much STUFF. So this kid drives the other two batty because he doesn't want to adhere to the chore chart they agreed to. So I'm not sure that strategy will work. Just sayin' Good luck everyone!
  2. My adult kids ARE local. Like three miles away. In an apartment we rent for 3.3K a month (with another one of my bonus kids as a roommate). Yet I have one of my bonus kids staying at my house a couple of days until his flight back home and my kid who is their BFF just told me he plans on staying here too. I think I saw RED y'all. These two together make noise until 2 or 3 in the morning and then sleep in until 11am. I told them both, you make noise or wake me up and you're both out of my house even if it's 2am.
  3. Oh good! It was not just me going, "Move, MOVE! Why are you all watching and not shoving Biden head first in the Beast!!!!"
  4. I'm sad reading this. It sounds like the infection that your mother-in-law incubates infected the next generation. Yes, I think of this kind of behavior like a virus. I don't know if you can pry your younger daughter away from the older. But if you can, through sending her further away for school or helping her take a summer position elsewhere I would try.
  5. But *some* of it IS solved because, even for bad reasons (I'm not lying to myself! It's a bad reason.) actual good is being said. From a vantage point of not being the victim, it's extremely easy to say this. But to a victim of sounds a lot like victim blaming.
  6. I would echo what others have said. In your mind go through with sending the card back, boldly marked RETURN TO SENDER. Then say thank you to those feelings and put them away. I would send a card with our handwritten names and a warm (but not gushy) wish for a happy holiday and new year. And that you love them. Kids, especially the errant ones, need to feel our unconditional love (even if it feels like it will kill us). Two of my four children send us up the river sometimes (most of the time?) but what we have learned is that just loving them calmly and peacefully is the only way to bring down the hackles and give them a space for any sort of reconciliation on their terms. There is a Rabbi who talks about this a lot. Rabbi Yakov Horowitz. You can find his video clips on Instagram and FB. There is another Rabbi (Rabbi Avi Fishoff) who has a program called Twisted Parenting which is this style of parenting difficult children on steroids. I wish you patience, eternal love, and more patience for all your children.
  7. I'm not disliking what you said. I'm just sad about it.
  8. It's been a while since I posted here. I had several weeks off around Thanksgiving and my quick trip to Israel. I really slowly restarted my exercise routine. 20-30 minutes of cardio (running usually) and 15-30 minutes of a kettlebell routine from Caroline Girvan. I'm ok with the exercise but I am having a very hard time staying with healthy choices for food. Hanukkah isn't helping. Good thing it's over soon!
  9. Mazel tov and I hope no one else catches the funk from your daughter!! This is a beautiful picture!
  10. Come to Boston around Yom Tov and I can hook you up!!!! 🤣
  11. I can get non dairy yogurt I want, so that is in the realm of possibilities I didn't sell any children but if I could I could get more lamb!! I have so much because I run a kosher lamb bulk buy every Rosh HaShana and Passover in Boston's Orthodox Jewish community. I got these lamb shoulder roasts for $12.99/lb. For you non-kosher keepers you are probably dying but that is extremely cheap for kosher lamb. I sent my daughter to the store because I didn't want to cook such a big roast (it was about 4.5lbs) for the few (three) meat eaters I had that night (one of my bonus kids asked for lamb for his birthday). She sent me pictures of these shoulder chops for $27/lb or loin chops for $39/lb. So I decided to defost and cook the roast. So that's why I have such a large amount of leftovers. I need to freeze it or come up with a lot of lamb loving guests for Shabbos. But I want something nice to do with it when I do have that number of guests....
  12. A WHAT? Beard straightener? Tell me more!
  13. I made a lamb shoulder roast on friday and have about 2 lbs of leftover meat. I was thinking Shepherd's Pie? Any other suggestions? I could do a Moroccan Tagine but will the meat suffer by being cooked again?
  14. You do need to value yourself before some random guy.
  15. I tested for 6 days every other day with no symptoms after an exposure. The tests can show a positive without symptoms. Good luck!
  16. I know certain cuts and styles make me look like a beef dumpling. Other cuts and styles make me look like I have curves (which I do!) and I look what I think of as my best. I have tried to give that information over to my daughter and sons. My daughter is seeing that certain things flatter her even if they are not the style worn by her girlfriends (and those styles honestly don't flatter her girlfriends either, but they feel more compelled to wear what's in style in their community). I don't it's about sexism; it's about looking strong and confident in what clothes you. I want to wear my clothes, not them wear me! ETA It didn't always mean looking sexy. Even my play and work on the car clothes ideally fit nicely and make me not look like a beef dumpling. But realistically I take the not nice fitting or not flattering clothes and use them for working on the car clothes.
  17. This article is from a teacher of my youngest as well as a friend and fellow Hillel board member from my college days at UNC-CH. This (and the many schools like it in the Tri-State area and beyond) is full of liberal Jews who are cast adrift right now.
  18. Oh, they are certainly not *my* friend (as a liberal, as a Black woman, as a Korean-American, as a woman, as a Jew, as a parent to a woman, and a parent to LGBT+ children) in the general sense. That is an understatement! But since the noisy ones (and many who aren't noisy) in my political party are definitely NOT my friends and these people are standing up for me, I'll take their support and be wary. On the other hand, Biden is standing up and helping Israel over and over. I don't ask my Jewish Republican (and separately the Trumpies) what they think of that. I know what they think. We are ALL holding our noses at this time. But at least we are still breathing! This is not a small gift! In other words, Jews have been in this situation over and over again. This isn't new stuff. Perhaps this is where the thought/stereotype that Jews shift and change according to"unknowable" whims. The whim is staying alive, maybe even thriving. US Jews have had that luxury until October 6. Just another page in history. Signed, -Holding my nose but breathing and finding friends where I can find them.
  19. She needs to get heavy shoes to keep her feet on the ground and not fly off the earth because she will be upside down all the time! She will need a shepherd's crook to move all the sheep out of the way. She will need extra roomy clothes because she will be having extra breakfasts with the Hobbits in Hobbiton. Just kidding!
  20. My daughter is still applying to many of these schools. Why? Because these are the good schools with established Orthodox Jewish presence, kosher food etc. The Modern Orthodox Schools are banding together to demand more (any?!?) action to make their alumni safer. We will see if anything changes.
  21. Well, the woman who spoke from UPenn is no longer going to be working as their head. UPenn also lost a 100 million dollar gift. FAFO I say.
  22. The infuriating thing is that none of these Social Justice Warriors are going to Israeli Embassies or Consulates to protest Israel military policy. They are going to SYNAGOGUES, TEMPLES, HILLELS, AND CHABADS. ETA and KOSHER RESTAURANTS. They are chanting genocidal slogans at Davids, Emilys, Michaels, and Alexandrias who may or may not be Zionists, or even been to Israel before. Kids trying to celebrate their Sabbath. Kids trying to go to class. Kids trying to study. Kids just being Jewish. Kids trying to eat kosher in their cafeteria or at a local kosher restaurant. Which of these SJWs is going to Chinese restaurants to protest about the injustice shown to Uigers. Which of them is going to a Russian class to protest about Putin? Which of them is going to a Persian owned store to protest the Ayotollah? Which of them are going to Southern Baptist Church to protest the years of sexual harassment claims?
  23. If any other ethnic group were publicly called out like the Jews, every school would have put the offenders through honor court or the like already. There would be DEI people making all sorts of statements. With the Jews? Crickets.
