  1. If you were really being snarky, you would have left it at y'all were on a date (nanny nanny boo boo! Pbbbbllllttt!) Letting her think your DH would get back to her maybe wasn't the best because maybe he doesn't want to play her games tonight. Or maybe I don't know anything and I should butt out!
  2. We had all but one of my kids home for Friday night (Shabbos -Jewish Sabbath) dinner (the youngest is with his best friend in NYC this weekend. The older two live nearby.). Husband was home from his Israel trip. Bonus son came too. Very loud and lively and we enjoyed it very much!
  3. I agree with you but my family and I still need to live in this world, broken though it is. So I teach my children to be aware these people and these feelings exist. Two of my kids have since opted out of religious Judaism, at least partially because of this.
  4. With my lived knowledge I can tell you that (Ashkenazi, Western, especially American) Jews do not usually identify me as Jewish at first glance. Even though I dress just like them, speak like them, act like them. I have been a practicing Orthodox Jew for well over 25 years and speak passible Hebrew and even some Yiddish. From Sephardi (Jews from North Africa/Middle East) Jews, they try to pin me as one of them because of my skin tone. Intersectional Jews (non -White Jews) have a hard time in Western Judaism. It's partially regular old racism, but also partially the Ashkenazi (Western European ) safety measure of circling the wagons to protect their fellow Jews. Sephardic Jews didn't do that.
  5. Is it SB? There is a small community there. Indianapolis had a small (er) community as well. Not everyone who is Orthodox Jewish dresses in a distinctive manner. Some dress much as "regular" people do.
  6. No, she means that in the US and Europe the Jewish look (or food or culture etc) is the Ashkenazi one. People are amazed there are/were Jewish communities in India, China, Morocco, Yemen, Uganda, Ethiopia, etc etc. They are Jewish - 100% but people in the West think Seinfeld or Woody Allen. Not Paula Abdul (Jewish).
  7. I believe Sharon MA is one of the cities with the highest Jewish percentage of citizens. Other than the synagogues in it (not that many considering the old saying, Two Jews, Three Synagogues) it doesn't feel particularly Jewish. Feels New England-y.
  8. Indeed I did convert but I have non-convert friends who don't look Jewish. I can usually pick out Jews, Slavic or otherwise. I have good Jewdar.
  9. My father in law looks like Woody Allen. Seriously. But he is not at all Jewish. I'm Jewish and I don't LOOK Jewish. Bad at times. Good at others.
  10. Bolt (and everyone), should you ever find your way to Boston (Or Tokyo) I can happily host you so you can meet some Jews. Not fair to post this on the Jewish Sabbath! 😁 But all the answers are there and still there are more (and no) reasons for anti-Semitism.... We (Orthodox Jews) think this is part and parcel of being Jewish. All the reasons given for anti-Semitism literally contradict themselves. Jews are rich. Jews are poor and leach off of society. Jews control everything, Jews control nothing and scheme to get control. Etc. Etc. It has been existent as long as there have been Jews.
  11. Praying. I had an ultrasound for my DS2 (now 19) and he had some sort of blockage in his kidney. Somehow it sorted itself out afterwards. He has a couple of ultrasounds after birth and was declared ok. I hope it's the same for you!
  12. I bought a used gym quality elliptical. It was a little bit more than that but it gets used every day and it hasn't had any issues in two years. Good luck!
  13. There is never a good time for such stuff, but on a vacation?! Extra cruddy. I'm super sorry and I hope you can center yourself and block this person permanently.
  14. My sister got one at her high school graduation in 1996. I never got one but I went to a boarding school out of the area. I only saw it again after my sister passed away in 2015. She kept jewelry in it and my dad gave most of that to my daughter (who very much resembles my sister). ETA: The furniture store has been in that small town FOREVER it seems. Still there.
  15. Can I join that club? I wear 3/4 sleeve polo shirts and denim skirts just about every day!
  16. Layers. Warm socks, good shoes that you can wear on the plane (because shoes take up an awful lot of space in a suitcase. Pack only a carryon. You can pack a duffle if you think you will go crazy bringing souvenirs back but really you should be able to pack for a week to ten days easily in a carryon.
  17. @saraha how did you spirit away my MIL to your Christmas celebration? She's an awesome lot like my MIL. I'm so sorry. You did really good this time. I stand up and applaud you! Mine brought us a ratty, gigantic suitcase filled with gifts (?) and told us that my 2nd DS asked for the suitcase to move into his dorm. My son was 🤔 and said he never asked her for one as he knows we have so much luggage and he's just moving about four miles away. DH just quietly moved it to a safe spot and poof! It was gone before the weekend started. This happens all.the.time and she ISN'T scared of the USPS. In fact, if she would just stop sending crap to us she'd be quite a bit more wealthy.
  18. I hope things get better and soon @Melissa in Australiaand that the spiders get moved back outside but really, really far away! We had torrents of water gush out of our smoke detectors last Thursday hours before all of our relatives came for the bar mitzvah. Fun times I tell you. Now we have a delightful square cut out of the ceiling in the dining room.
  19. Oh Dawn! I'm so sorry. Thank you for sharing your father's picture and how wonderful he was. I echo what others have said about tackling just the funeral stuff and make sure you get at least 6-10 more death certificates than you think you need. May you be comforted by the Holy One, Blessed be He, your family and friends, and the knowledge you stood by your father until the end and he knows that in Heaven.
  20. That sounds so stressful! Do you have Venmo? Could you please PM it to me?
  21. Dawn, I want to reiterate what everyone else has said. You are a GREAT daughter and you have done so much for your father and you should praise yourself for it. I pray for you all peace and compassion for all involved and an easy passing in a good time.
  22. I'm so sorry. Knowing all too well how YA-parent relationships can be from my own YA kids, I have extra sadness for you as this is supposed to be a season of joy and family time. It's true that your d@mned if you do and d@mned if you don't when their minds have you pegged as the bad guy. Just keep trying to love them as adults.
  23. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, Happy Chanukah to those who celebrate, and peace and joy to us all!
  24. Oy! What horrible timing! We also had several people get COVID just in time for our youngest's bar mitzvah this weekend. Throws a wrench in plans.
  25. I'm so sorry! I'm glad you got to see him before he passed.
