  1. Dolly, Just a few questions, if you don't mind--is it necessary to purchase the teacher's book? Did you use it with your class? If so, what all does it include? Also did you order the book directly from Sadler-Oxford or from another source? Teresa
  2. Thank you for this suggestion. It sounds like it will be a good fit for us. I hope we have as much success with it as you have had with your students!
  3. Is there a resource/book out there that teaches all the ins and out of how to do a research paper. I know SWB has info on the website. But I am looking for a thorough book that my dd could use now and take to college with her later. I haven't had her prepare many in-depth research papers (10+ pages). Now as she is heading off to college, I am feeling like I have not prepared her well enough. I had thought about letting her do one this summer.
  4. Jen, So proud of you. I too used to be a chicken to, until my husband convinced me of all the good that comes from giving blood (besides benefits to the receiver). It really helps with your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. I don't give very regularly (like my husband who has given 4 gallons), but every little bit helps. Way to go!
  5. My size is an 8. My dd is a 10 My ds and dh are 11
  6. We've used Saxon from 5/4 to Advanced Math. Then we have switched to Lial Precalculus and Foerster Precalculus. We tried Saxon Calculus but it didn't work for us.
  7. There is John Thomas, William Jennings (double names must have been popular back them), Spotswood, and Odell.
  8. Can't add a lot of advice to what others stated. Depending on your airline, they may have free movies for you to watch also. Like someone else said, be sure to drink lots of liquids (everytime they come around offering beverages, take something). One other thing, to reduce jet lag, set your watch to the time at your destination and start pretending it is that time. Where are your ports of call in the Mediterannean. We went on a Mediterannean cruise this past fall. Hope you get to go to Santorini; if you do, make sure you ride a donkey to the top (it will be an experience you will talk about forever).
  9. I am so very proud of you!!! We can do all things through God who strengthens us! I will join you in praising God for his goodness and faithfulness.
  10. We enjoyed watching it! However, it is not one that I would want to watch over and over (once is enough). My ds (age 15) rolled his eyes the whole way through it.
  11. Pamela, I too have trouble with the whole independence and give my kids room to breathe, think, decide on their own thing. My dd is heading off to college this fall, so I am trying to back off and let her "fly on her own" more. It is just hard when you have been with them 24/7 for the past 18 years of their life. Sometimes I know she feels smothered by both of her parents (that's why she is insisting that she stay in a dorm next year, instead of commuting from home). But yet there are times that she still comes running to mom and dad for support, advice, coaching, etc. So I pray a whole lot that God will show me the right balance of involvment in my children's lives.
  12. Great! I thought it was just my computer having a bad day! I'm relieved that everyone else was experiencing it also! (Misery loves company I guess)
  13. Would you mind sharing with me what other books have been recommended that you think are better than the Apologia books. I have been absent from the board a long time and haven't heard of these alternatives. My son is looking towards a degree in engineering and I want him to be adequately prepared. Another question, if we go on to take the Advanced Courses through Apologia does that help make up for the deficiencies any, or is the same deficiencies true of the Advanced Courses also? Thanks!
  14. I agree. My children are older teens and I still don't feel comfortable "dropping them off" at certain events. There have been very few times that I have allowed my dd to spend the night at others houses. Instead, we try to be proactive and have the kids in our home. I really want to know the person in charge of the activity, before I "drop them off". There are too many weirdos out there. I also try to teach my kids what to do in case they are in a situation that they do not feel comfortable.
  15. I do all my errands on Satuday, mainly because we live 45 minutes from a Walmart and good grocery store. When I lived close to shopping, I spent so much money. This way, I save on gas and shopping. However, I do regret having to give up 5-6 hours every Saturday.
  16. My large skillet is nonstick, but all the other pieces are tri-ply.
  17. I love calaphon . I have a 4qt, and dutch oven, plus a large skillet with lid. They are a little pricey but cook fantastically well. I wait until a store (don't know if we are supposed to give names of stores or not) has a 20% coupon then I purchase one at a time.
  18. Try looking on a boy scout website; they are usually fun on fun, easy, and fairly delicious meals including foil meals, and dutch oven meals. We like things like taking biscuit dough wrapping it around a stick and rolling in melted butter and cinnamon sugar and letting them roast it on the stick.
  19. This has been a challenge for us also. Most of the kids in the church youth group are public or private school students. So my kids feel left out when they all talk about teachers, subjects, or school events. Many times they have learned that their "friends" at church had a get together and "forgot" to invite my kids, which really hurts their feelings. We have tried having kids over to our house all the time, but they don't seem to return the favor. My dd has been blessed to have a couple of homeschooled friends. She feels closest to these friends and feels like she can relax around them and not have to pretend she is someone that she is not. My ds, on the other hand, does not have any real friends. However, we are in the process of moving to a community where the homeschool population is much greater. We visited a church that had 20 homeschooled children and within 10 minutes, my ds was surrounded by homeschooled boys his age and was having the time of his life. Pray about it and God will provide your children with friends.
  20. Names in my family are Iva, Lorene, Verchie, Nadene, Victoria (love that one), Anna Ellen (love that one too).
  21. I have a dd who is graduating from high school in two weeks, and I am so very glad that I kept several of her papers. Every letter she wrote, every mother's day card she made, every Christmas letter to Santa, in addition to all those darling little stories she wrote at an elementary age. These are so very precious to me. Four years ago, as I was packing up papers getting ready to move, the kids came in and found me sitting in the middle of my bedroom floor crying as I read these things again. They thought I was crazy, but they too will understand one day!
  22. My husband will be glad to hear that eating less beef saves money (although I don't understand how--maybe in medical costs). My husband is always looking for ways to save money, he'll be relieved to know we are saving money since we rarely eat beef (as I say that I remember that we are having hamburgers for supper tonight). Thanks for the tip.
  23. Yes, I like my name, but it is misspelled a lot. But that really doesn't bother me that much.
  24. Yes, I would. First, I'm sure my mom would rather I be blessed by wearing them and getting the good out of them rather than having a stranger wear them. Second, I would feel loved by my mom everytime I wore them. I agree you could wear them when your dad is not around.
