  1. I agree... I am very logical - my dd (15) is not. In one test prep book there was a math problem which was a simple multiplication problem of two numbers - each roughly 20MM. But the last digit of the first was "3" and of the second number it was "2". In the set of answers there was only one that ended with a "6" in the ones spot. I wouldn't even work that problem - I'd just pick "C"... I looked at her test booklet and she must have spent 2 full minutes multiplying it out. Even if she began multiplying - she could have stopped after 20 seconds and already realized it would end in "6"... but in the end when her columns were all croocked, she added incorrectly - couldn't find an exact match so she guessed (even worse)..LOL For Christmas she too is getting College Prep Genius to teach her these tricks which may not come naturally to some kids. I did see online that a readiness benchmark for sophomores is CR49, Math47 and Writing48 for a 145 total. But with preparation and teaching some of these tricks, students can increase their scores on the PSAT from 20 to 60 points. Without preparation they estimate an average increase of 3-5 points. (That's kind of sad for a year's worth of public school - LOL) I WISH I could share my dd's scores BUT the College Board called me today to tell me the local high school she took the test in never submitted an answer sheet for her. The school that day told us they had NEVER had a homeschooler sit for the PSAT's so of course my husband thinks this is a conspiracy - LOL... So I am in the dark as to where she is at - I'd rather know just how much prep she needs. I actually came online tonight to see if anyone else has no results... :( Also - don't underestimate the pressure of sitting in a cafeteria with 300+ students at big tables. We now test our dd at the local library instead of at home in her PJ's...
  2. Circuit city just sent me an email yesterday that they are expecting a shipment in this week. See if you can buy it online from them because then you can continually choose store locations a little further from your home. We did that with a screen projector - ordered it online and drove 40 miles to pick it up because it was $400 OFF.... even with gasoline it was a good deal. Good Luck!
  3. They actually opened the poll on another page if you would still like to vote... http://www.parenting.com/Mom/mom_channel.jsp?genID=6 But see the question isn't is HS'ing better than PS? It's just simply... Is HS'ing good for kids? I hope that some of the new mom's on that board will see the results of the poll and not be so quick to send their dc to school at age 5. :)
  4. Yup - they closed the poll.... I don't think it was going the way they expected... LOL
  5. It can't be just the FIAR boards alone swaying the results... BUMP!
  6. Today was a perfect example... 9 out of 13 problems incorrect. I told her to go back, carefully do the entire set again with her best handwriting and double check her answers both logically and by reworking the problem. She sighed that heavy sigh but returned and only got one wrong out of the 13. (she converted centimeters to meters exactly opposite of how it should be done). So it really is just carelessness. Good Luck with your dd.
  7. Our 11 yr old dd was in the same boat last year... not checking her work and making small mistakes here and there. We pushed forward to 8/7 but just this past month I need to slow her down. She is still making these errors and if she would just check her work she would see them. So she began the year testing about 98% - but within the last 2 months actually got a 50% on one test - and a 70% on another. Nothing conceptual... all incorrect answers were - decimal in wrong place, she copied the problem incorrectly to the answer sheet to begin with, she didn't write her answer in the correct units etc. So we came to an agreement about 2 weeks ago that we will continue with 8/7 but it may take us until November - and we will work through the summer. 8/7 is much harder than 7/6 IMHO - and we had bagged much of the Facts practice due to time constraints. So now we are back to Facts Practice and if the lessons slow down - so be it. She needs to work the problems correctly - and set them up accurately.
  8. Same exact thing going on here - I'm 43. Started about 8 months ago and exact same situation you are dealing with. I thought I'd be so clever to buy a Diva Cup about a year ago - got to use it for 3 cycles and then it was worthless when the clots began. Lovely! I work with many women 38-55 and it is very common of perimenopause. Good Luck!!!
  9. We just watched the comedian Tim Hawkins the other night and he talked about this because they HS their kids. He was talking about the "My kid is an honor student at XYZ school"... and he said he wanted to get one for his car that said... "Our kids are homeschooled... We have absolutely no idea how they're doing." - LOL We all broke out into laughter!!!!:p
  10. Well we were in the same situation as you.... and since we were already HS'ing part time while dd was in PS - it got to be too much of a struggle. We sat down and worked out finances, insurance, costs of daycare for #2 baby and we decided financially and emotionally for our kids it was best for dh to stay home. So - he has been home since 2002 and we pulled oldest dd out of school in 2006 for good. Financially it was a great move because I was the one with benefits and a good salary and I loved my job... come tax time with only one income we make out great. Yes we had to learn to limit dinners out etc. - BUT it's so worth it! I pretty much do the planning for him and curriculum choices etc. and he is "executes" the plan. :D The kids love it - and he has gotten over being the "token dad" at all the HS events. He even teased me last week that the women now realize he can put all the tables away after co-op...
  11. I agree with GothicGyrl that it sounds like allergic asthma. For the first 19 years of my life I was ill with croup/bronchitis and then asthma every December/January. After years of misery and adrenaline shots in my chest, I finally found my trigger in 1987 - the LIVE Christmas tree that my parents bought every year. Apparently there is a mold that grows under the bark when the trunk is cut and set in a warm environment. But for years my mom (an RN) made me sit in a steamy bathroom - which made it MUCH worse.... or the frigid cold air - which also made it worse. I am allergic to mold spores - so any damp day affects me. The best non-prescription tricks I have found are sleeping with Vick's on the soles of my feet covered with socks and Vick's on my chest, Ricola cough drops in the middle of the night just to have a slight drip down my throat. Propped up pillows and laying on my left side. But I HAD to buy a neublizer. Too many ER visits as a child and I thought I cannot keep doing this. I keep albuterol in the kit and I may use it a few times a year - but Insurance covered the machine cost years ago and I just feel better having it in the house just in case. If I don't catch the barking quickly - it turns into asthma very fast and then only prednisone and Tussionex cough syrup help. Good Luck - between MD, pulmonologist and allergy MD - the Allergy MD was the one who helped me make sense of everything the most and helped me to change my environment - not just give me meds to cover the problem.
  12. Faith - Thank you for that link. It turned up more names than I've ever seen before compared to the NJ State Troopers website. Through knowledge and prayer hopefully we can protect our children as best possible. Thanks!
  13. Hey Jersey Girls... We're here at Exit 98. My dh, Alex hs's the 2 girls FT and in between chases after our 3 yr old son. We started our journey by using Five in a Row as our nighttime reading when our oldest was in Pre-K. Then our weekends grew to include all the activities for the book we were rowing that week. Then later our vacations began to revolve around places we had researched and were curious to visit. Finally when she was in 4th grade PS - we decided the school schedule was just getting in the way of her real education :D Our 5yr old dd is using FIAR, R&S 1 (Math & Lang Arts), Handwriting for a Reason A & Explode the Code 1.5. Our 11 yr old dd is using Saxon 8/7, R&S 5 Lang Arts & Science, Seq. Spelling, Latina Christiana 1, Handwriting for a Reason F & Wrirting Strands. (And she still loves FIAR) ;) Our 3 yr old is just beginning My Father's World. Nice to meet you all!
