  1. I still haven't read Lord of the Rings... gasp! Love the books by Nesbit.
  2. I prefer to spend money on experiences rather than stuff. We have a small house and I am constantly battling clutter.
  3. Never heard of that. We opened ours with family & friends the day after our wedding.
  4. My oldest ds was 5, maybe even 6, before he was consistently using the toilet. I know it is incredibly frustrating! He is now 11, and looking back, I wish I wouldn't have gotten so angry. I don't have any advice on to deal with the issue at present, but it will eventually resolve!!! Good luck!
  5. It would bug me. I'd call to complain and ask for a refund. If no refund is given then I'd find another place to shop and let them know I won't be buying from them in the future.
  6. We don't do the flu vaccines. Not convinced I would vaccinate if I had it to do over.
  7. I highly recommend Handwriting Without Tears. I attended their course for my OT license & found it to be very developmentally appropriate. They have great on-line resources as well. Some activities to vary handwriting activities are to have the child use a skewer or pencil-like object to write in clay (hand strength), form letters using Wikki Sticks, and use 2" binder to create a more vertical surface & move the wrist into extension (this helps facilitate a tripod grasp).
  8. The OT (occupational therapist) in me says that posture is very important for writing. I have a child-sized desk for my 7 yr old and the 8 & 10 yr old use adult sized desks. I have them sit forward, on the edge of their seats so their backs are straight & their feet are flat on the floor. I insist/get on their case when they are doing their handwriting lessons. I'm not so strict for other lessons. They also have bean bag chairs that they can use with a clip board. It is important that the child has a good base of support when writing and for his feet to be flat on the floor. If his feet don't touch the floor you can use a stool or duct tape phone books together. Try to get as close to a 90 degree angle as possible at the knees & hips. I hope this helps!:)
  9. All About Spelling is working for my boys!
  10. I usually buy one or two good sets of colored pencils from Michael's craft store when they are on sale and keep those for art projects. My boys enjoy making their own baseball cards & have gone through several boxes of Crayola... they are always dull & break a lot!
  11. Thanks to everyone who posted, I really enjoy seeing what other hsers are doing. I wish we would get some snow, but don't think it is going to happen on Galveston Island!
  12. I also use Saxon math. My 5th grader struggles & my 3rd grader excels in math. They are both in 6/5. When it seems too easy for the 3rd grader, we somemtimes do 2 lessons in one day. He watches the first lesson (Dive CD) & only does the lesson practice. Then he watches the 2nd lesson & does the lesson & mixed practice. Sometimes I worry that he'll have gaps when he gets older, but it seems to be working for now. I hope this helps.
