That is bizarre about the neighbor kids! As someone who has a hard time sleeping, ear plugs and a white noise machine are necessities. Also, I started using melatonin this year and it is a game changer (both for me and for my child who was a terrible sleeper). I have also found that the problems sleeping lead to anxiety about not sleeping, which keeps me from wanting to go to bed at night. So making myself go to bed at a certain time can be helpful.

We are moving to New Bedford, MA from TX (the land of no homeschool laws). When we lived in PA there was one great website that was super informative. I am looking for something similar. I know I need to send in plans for each child, including text books. Do you include scope & sequence? And what are they really looking for as far as health & PE? Thanks!

I would be FREAKING out. Absolutely not.

pittsburg peeps . . . . anyone ever heard of

Yes. We lived north of Pittsburgh for 11 years. It’s a thing (and sometimes it’s the only refreshment offered at the reception). -
I’m sorry you hurt your leg! My guess is that those people were watching to see how hurt you were, just without much expression on their faces. I was just thinking of this thread. I am at the hospital (TX) and the lady at registration greeted me with “Hello, how are you doing?” And I knew I had to finish the greetings before getting to business. In NE, “How are you doing?” Is synonymous with “How can I help you?”

I did not read all of the replies yet, but I’m sorry you are struggling. I grew up in MA but haven’t lived there in nearly 20 years, and we are about to move back there. I am anticipating some reverse culture shock. I think that changing your mindset drastically would really benefit you. They are not intending to be rude - they are being direct. Driving is just different (close). Honking is a very acceptable form of communication. ? Strangers generally don’t chitchat. In fact, a cashier may consider it “rude” to comment about the personal items you are buying or to try to engage with you in a familiar way when he/she doesn’t know you. And keep in mind the flip side - in many ways it is easier to make friends, because if someone says they want to get together, they really mean it. Also, there is an ingrained fierce loyalty. Once you have friends they will stick with you. I would focus on finding people who you think are potential friends, and start developing relationships. And I think that after you’ve been there for a while the general population won’t seem so abrasive. ((Hugs))

We are moving. We will be out of our house by the end of July and we are rolling out of the great state of Texas during the second week of August. We usually start school during the first week of August... so that’s not happening. We are moving to MA but it looks like we will be making a stop in RI for a while because we can’t get a stinking house (the last one we bid on went for 25k OVER asking price!!). My 10th grader: I have found a place where he could take classes, but to take an entire course load there would be more expensive than we can really afford. A friend suggested Dive Into Math/Science online, so we may go that route, and then maybe he will be able to take just a couple classes. I’ve also looked at Heart of Dakota high school and I think there are a lot of pros, but it’s also expensive and it leaves all the correcting/teaching on me, which is not great for my sanity. 6th & 7th grade girls: I have tried to get us into a co-op, but it turns out that no one wants a family who they can’t meet in person. So now it all falls back on me (we have been part of a co-op for the past 3 years and I appreciate the class sharing). I am considering Heart of Dakota for them too. Are there online science programs for middle schoolers? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Can I add my own moving woes? We have been looking for a house in MA from TX, which is SO hard. We found one we LOVE this morning. We jumped on it. I wrote an “offer letter” (which had me crying) and I just know we are not going to get it. Moving is misery.

Sometimes right when I get up, but sometimes I wait until after coffee. Sometimes I do both!

Family of 6 in what is probably a medium cost area. My budget is similar to yours. I think could survive for a few weeks on $70 (we have had some lean years) but it would be painful.

Toys/Activities for Long Drives or Moving
JessReplanted replied to 4Kiddos's topic in The Chat Board
The last time we moved across the country a friend gave our kids boxes as we were leaving with a bunch of little activity things in them. They thought that was fun. We are moving again soon and I’ve been thinking about audio books we could get. One thing that surprised me last time (and made travel easier) was that everyone was SO exhausted from all of the packing and cleaning and from the anticipation of moving, that we were all actually relieved to finally get in the car and just sit there. Our kids were 4, 5, & 8 at the time and they all did fine. -

Today: 2 mattress covers for 2 beds that are too hard, and a bottle of children’s sleep vitamins (melatonin +) for the child who doesn’t sleep (I hope this helps)!! -
I think talking happens when people know each other. Our church has three services and several thousand people, but we still talk.

We are talkers. The more people we know, the longer we stay and talk.

I would look for an Airbnb. I love Boston. There is SO much history there. Look into the Freedom Trail & Quincy Market.

Is there a thread of transcript templates that I'm missing? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

We just went through this. It’s really challenging to choose a name! We went with Lolli & Popsie. I like “Gram”, but not for another ten years or so. ?

I am still recovering from mine. It was 6 weeks ago today. I had a tumor on my ovary that had to come out, so it really wasn’t a choice. After the surgery, lab work showed that there were other issues we were not aware of. So hopefully I will feel really amazing once I am recovered. The recovery process has been so long and so slow though.

I had a hysterectomy on Feb 9th (abdominal incision) and I’m still recovering. It has been rough. Surgery went fine, but then I had an allergic reaction to pain meds and then my incision developed an infection. I thought this would be similar to a c-section, and it just hasn’t been. When they say 6-8 weeks of recovery, they really mean it. I was also terrified of surgery. I had a tumor that had to come out, which really forced me to get it done. And the pathology report showed several other issues too that we were not aware of. So, I should feel really wonderful once I have recovered. It is just taking a very long time.
