  1. Another vote for GWG. It is secular and it "gets done" :001_smile:
  2. I think it depends on your child. We have never done formal spelling, DD is a natural speller and we read a lot. We used Spelling Accelerator software for a while, adding new difficult words we found as we read. It has some fun games and quizes, but you have to make the word lists. I do think DD learns the spelling of new words by reading them. What is LCC?
  3. We ditched the dictation too (Level 3). In fact, I am ready to ditch the whole thing, but DD is not - she likes reading the stories! :001_huh: So now we use some of those pages for handwriting practice / copywork.
  4. We use and like both, but I would say MM is more challenging. Why not try the free samples and see if it works for you? :)
  5. I clicked on this thread to find out what a co-op is...:001_huh: There is nothing of the sort where I live. It doesn't sound like something we would like to do, particularly the "statement of faith" bit...:scared:
  6. Speech delay did not mean reading delay in our case. Our DD struggled with expressive and receptive language but practically taught herself to read at a very early age. She is now an excellent reader with a huge vocabulary. She does struggle with handwriting. Either way, I think you can still homeschool him :001_smile:
  7. My kid struggles with handwriting. We did WWE2 and are now on (halfway) WWE3. She loves the stories and does great with narrations but the dictation is getting to be too much. At first I just did shorter dictations, but I am now up to a point where I will sometimes let her do it as copywork instead.:blushing:
  8. .....you forgot there was once a "4 year cycle".
  9. Thanks so much for your comments. I'm feeling like I can do this after all. :001_smile:
  10. Thankyou snowbelt and OhElizabeth. That is very helpful. The portfolio thing sounds scary, though :scared: Oh well, hopefully I'll get the hang of it.:001_huh:
  11. We are currently in Europe and do not have to notify or submit anything. We are contemplating a move to Ohio in the future. I know there would be a lot more paperwork to be done as well as testing, but what if your kid is not up to a "standardized test"? (mine has processing speed/attention issues - possible HFA). What does the law say about homeschooling kids with special needs? Would greatly appreciate any help! TIA :bigear:
  12. Greta, I write with a mixture of print/cursive as well and it is also painful. My DS11 was never taught cursive in PS. We liked the Italics samples we saw, but then I looked at ZB, and that looks more like the way I was taught cursive so I went with ZB. We have not started the book, but it is just what I was looking for. DS and I plan to use it over the summer. http://shop.zaner-bloser.com/p-905-self-instruction-in-handwriting.aspx They also have a workbook for middle school: http://shop.zaner-bloser.com/p-69-self-instruction-for-middle-school.aspx The fountain pen idea sounds good, maybe we should give that a try as well!;)
  13. We like it too...maybe I should stop reading all these grammar threads
  14. Isn't it sad when the person trying to "educate" you makes a fool out of herself by showing her own lack of education? :grouphug:
  15. Should we try FLL4 before the new ALL is ready? We have been doing GWG (now starting level 5), it gets done, it's easy, but is it enough? How does FLL compare to GWG in terms of content? TIA
  16. We use Singapore's "My Pals are Here" but since you are looking for something available in the UK, how about Galore Park Junior Science? It looks pretty good. (available through Amazon UK).
  17. Wait, there's a sale season? :001_huh:
  18. They are smaller than WWE2. Still a bit too big for us. Since I see you use HWOT, I can say from the bold line to the dotted one, the width is the same as HWOT Regular Double Line notebook paper (grades 2-3). We use HWOT narrow line paper, but still got the workbook.
  19. :thumbup:Oh, I really hope this will be available as a download!
  20. I love downloads too! I usually bring back all my books in a suitcase. I actually got WWE from Amazon UK, though, so I have not done any printing of that, but it sounds reasonable to print only the student pages.:cheers2:
  21. I haven't used any of them but am considering SYRWL Geography for 5th........maybe 6th grade, it looks great.
  22. Hot Lava, my DD did the exact same thing yesterday! I am glad you started this thread and very thankful for Dcurry's wonderful web link. :hurray:
  23. I am sorry to hear about your dad's illness. Many great suggestions have been posted here. I would like to add a couple of online resources that might work for you: http://www.brainpop.com http://www.time4learning.com I hope these help. Best Wishes.
  24. I don't see a problem with changing the sequence. We accidentally did MPH 3/4 out of sequence, just because I pulled out the last book and then DD wanted to continue with that. We had only been using the text ,activity book, and Homework, though. This year we are adding HOTS, and Tests - but so far it doesn't look like it reviews past units.
