  1. I want to purchase a phonogram cd - which do you all recommend - the one from WRTR or the one form SWR?
  2. BUMP! I want to hear more about this! I had thought I would do the same with books like: Little Bear, Frog and Toad, and a few others. My son can already read three letter words...anyone else done this? I definitely need to review/learn phonics myself first. Thanks for the post Crimson Wife - that should help! Any other suggestions? I want it to feel organic. So I basically want to learn it myself first and then share it with my son in a relaxed manner while reading with him...... I also purchased the book How to Tutor which covers reading. Anyone used that? Thundersweet I am curious what books you started with. I understand that SWR also has a Phonogram Fun Packet which is helpful for teaching all the phonemes and rules in a fun way. And Lastly, I am going to show my ignorance here: are there 44 phonemes or 70 phonemes? thanks!
  3. thanks again Tina - one more thing - what does OG stand for? (couldn't find it in the abbreviations list...) ;p
  4. I am going to piggy back off of your post :) I would love to get my hands on a list of the animals in this curriculum. And I would love to know if the stories are any good....thanks
  5. creekmom ~ what is SWB's WWE? I know what SWB stands for but could not find WWE in the abbreviation list....thanks! Tina~ thanks for the info on Phonics Road - it look very interesting and I like that it is preps for the Latin Road to English Grammar...I will continue to read more of the links you sent..... Ellie~ thanks for the recommendation of Spalding. It looks very very thorough! actually Phonics Road and Spalding seem similar - at least in their emphasis on spelling I definitely have more reading to do....thanks all! and keep it coming!!!
  6. Brilliant unity! Thank you! I am gonna do that - maybe I will purchase some new colored beads at Michael's to put on it instead....and save the old beads for fine-motor-development/jewelry-making fun.....I know this is silly but I just can't stand to buy another abacus when I already have a perfectly good one at home.....the RS abacus colors are yellow and blue right?
  7. thanks for the bump Kat! I will have to check out 6 traits of writing - thanks SaDonna! I am still curious about other good writing, spelling and phonics curriculums for early elementary.....
  8. thanks devotional soul for the tip! thanks for the heads up about the tiles! thanks crimson wife for the great info - that was super helpful!
  9. oooops! I meant to include this link to satorismiles - the one I posted before has alittle prehistory at the very beginning but this one has much more info about prehistory: http://satorismiles.com/tag/prehistory/
  10. thanks snowfall! that was super helpful! I think I can modify the melissa and doug abacus without too much trouble!
  11. satorismiles.com has a great layout of her prehistory curriculum - very thorough with tons of fun projects that I think an 11 year old would enjoy. snowfall: thanks for the bringinguplearners.com recommendation!
  12. ok one more question before I give it a rest! :D I would like to get my hands on a copy of the Burgess Animal Book that has color illustrations - can anyone tell me which publisher carries a version like that and where I might purchase it. Same goes for the Burgess Bird Book too.... Thanks in advance for all your help!
  13. I am considering using the writing curriculum put out by the Institute for Excellence in Writing for the elementary years and beyond. Has anyone used it? Do you like it? What have other people used? I noticed that the main curriculum starts in 3rd grade. Before that there is a phonics curriculum and a spelling curriculum. Has anyone used phonetic zoo? Are their other phonics or spelling curriculums that would be better to use? Phonetic Zoo is kind of expensive. What about explode the code? What about something more hands on (less worksheet based)? there was a curriculum I just saw online tonight and now I cannot find it or remember the name but it used 3D letters (kinda like montessori) and was called touch tones or something and was supposed to be great for kids who needed alittle extra help...anyone know what I am talking about? I also saw they had a Holling Clancy Holling supplemental peice - sounds super interesting - could I start that prior to grade 3? And lastly: Are there any must see resources for copywork (I was just planning on using a selection of poetry, my son's own stories, etc.)?
  14. Hey there! I am brand new here. My friend recommended that I direct my questions about the Right Start Math Curriculum here. I am planning to purchase Level A. I have some of the manipulatives already and would love to make a few of them as well. 1. My dad is going to make the colored tiles out of wood for us. He is only able to make 160 tiles with the wood he has on hand - instead of 200 tiles. Will this be a problem? 2. I have the Melissa and Doug abacus - can I use that? I remember coming across a blog post once about modifying the Melissa and Doug abacus to suit your needs. I think it was in order to make it more like the Montessori abacus. Could I use the Montessori abacus? I can't find the blog post now of course, anyone know where it is? 3. Is Right Start Math a good foundation for Singapore Math? I like Right Start because it has alot of hands on stuff and covers a variety of areas. Ultimately I would like to switch to Singapore Math. When would be a good time to do that? first grade?
