Issue #1 of the day:
KidsHappen replied to Mom2legomaniacs's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was also thinking that although I have never in my life had any interest what-so-ever in learning to knit, I would really love to make a trip to east TN just so you could teach me how to make those wonderful socks. :) -
Dumb question: What is a libertarian?
KidsHappen replied to VaKim's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes, I had heard that and I would have voted for that ticket. However, I have since heard that this was political posturing by Barr and that he had no intention of actually doing this even though his VP pick said that he would step aside for this because he believe that it would be in the best interest of the party to do so. The members of the following parties held a press conference announcing that they would agree to get their constituents to vote for any third party candidate: the Constitutional party, the Green Party, Ralph Nader and one other person I can't remember right now. Barr didn't not attend this conference and only sent his letter to Ron Paul after the fact. This leads me to futher question his character. My husband is very involved in this whole movement and I can have him send you more info in a PM or post about it if more people are interested in it. -
This not directed to you in particular. I decided to post under you because you were the first one to bring this up. Many, many people posted that they would not have participated in this conversation if it were not for the metaphor so I see good reason to keep it around. Yes, it may be confusing for newbies but I do believe that they will figure it out much as has happened in other cases where we continue to use metaphors.

Dumb question: What is a libertarian?
KidsHappen replied to VaKim's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have voted Libertarian in the last four elections, maybe longer. Personal rights and freedoms are the most important issues to me. I will not be voting for this party in this election. I am not at all impressed with Barr - his politics or character. Even though Ron Paul was registered with the Republican party, he is in fact both a libertarian and a constitutionalist. I agree with him on almost every issue. I think that if he had originally run on the Libertarian ticket he would have had a much better chance. At this point, I have absolutely no idea who I will be voting for. This party is very similar to homeschooler in that it is comprised of a very wide spectrum of people who only have this one particular subject in common. I also believe that a lot more people would be libertarians if only they knew what it means and stands for. In my opinion it represents the American ideas as they were first articulated. Another good and fairly short primer on this subject is What it Means to be a Libertarian by Charles Murray. -
Apparently there has been some confusion with regards to some of the tea threads. First of all, most of the threads regarding tea were speaking mataphorically although one was talking about actual tea the beverage. In any case, it seems that in the future we may need some way of distinguishing the two. These are the three choices that I have heard so far. Also people were using tea to refer to two different but related things and not necessarily understanding each other. Some people were using it to descibe an action while others were using it to descibe the hopeful results of that action. I do think that most people understood both references but if you found yourself confused at any point, it may be helpful consider that a different meaning may have been intended. Since it was Nicole's analogy, we should go with her meaning which was the results of that action. Perhaps another analogy will help with this. Alec Baldwin was in a movie (I don't remember which one) in which he said, "S*x is like Chinese food. The meal is not over until you both get your cookies." In our analogy, the tea is the cookies and the action would be the meal that leads up to the cookies. Therefore, we can refer to brewing tea as the action that leads to tea. The pot would of course be the overall container or packaging for brewing the tea. So far luckily, we have had no need to refer to any male parts in the tea making process. I think that with these basics we can figure out any other references made with regards to methods of brewing tea and various appliances and kitchenwares to assist in getting our tea. I hope that this post was helpful in clearing up any misunderstanding or confusion and that it will give us a common point of reference for any future discussions. I personally appreciate all of these conversations because I don't know about the rest of you but there are not a whole lot of people (certainly not as many as here) that I would be comfortable discussing this with in real life. Nor would get such a breadth of opinion and information. Thanks all.

I absolutely agree. I know that the original meaning was the second of the two as Nicole and Layla mentioned above but as more people got involved in the coversation the second meaning also came into play. I for one believe I am tracking people's vibes regardless of which meaning they are attaching to the metaphor and have been replying to people based on which way they appeared to be using it. Either way, it's all good. If anyone finds themselves confused, perhaps it would be helpful to go back through the threads  and consider them with the awareness that some people may have had the other meaning in mind. In any case, as long as a person realizes that we are using metaphor and not talking about an actual beverage then at least we are all in the same book even if not exactly the same page. So yes, we should agree on an alternative spelling, either teA as Chris suggested or perhaps TEA as opposed to tea. I suspect that we may have to specify for quite awhile as even today we still sometimes have to specify if we mean booKs or books.

Calling your daughter "princess"
KidsHappen replied to Ohio12's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I do refer to one of my dd as Princess Pain-in-the-Butt (and only mom refers to her that way) but she is 15 and has really earned the nickname. It is all in good fun and she takes it as such. I once told her that she was high maintanence and she informed that she was not, she was just expensive. ETA: That should say COULDN'T. -
For those with kids in PS
KidsHappen replied to fshinkevich's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have on dc who is going to PS for the first time this year. I also received a form with all of these questions. I only answered the ones that I was comfortable with. I did not answer the first two questions and I wasn't asked any regarding insurance. I did provide emergency contact information along with dr and dentist info. I also did not provide SS#. -
Let it go. Sell the lot, buy the house and build your home there. And you don't have to give up your dream to do it either. Your dream house can always be built on another lot at another time. In the mean time you can have your very own home which will be building equity that you can turn around and use later to build your dream house. It is all good hon. Really. Now I don't envy you the moving at all but I can't tell you how happy I am in my new house. It was our 1 year anniversary yesterday and I love it more everyday. And I have so many dreams for this house. Rugs, drapes, paint. You'll see, you'll love it. Right the check and then celebrate. I am so happy for you. :hurray:

OH MY! Galore Park Sci. Shocker!!
KidsHappen replied to jonesloonybin's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Much like the technical kinds of illustrations that you may see in a dr.'s office. As someone else pointed out the illustration only shows from the below the breast to the knees and is more of an outline. These are very similar to the picture in the Usborne book about babies. I for one could have used this particular drawing when I was younger. My mother was very open in discussing these issues with me but she missed one very important detail that she probably didn't even think of. She explained how the parts fit together but not the state that a man's anatomy need to be in to accomplish this task. All of the pictures or illustrations of men that I had ever seen showed men in their unaroused state (i.e. - David). I couldn't for the life of me understand how this part which was pointing in the wrong direction could possible interlock with the proper receptical which pointed in the other direction. I pictured that some very strange contortions were needed to accomplish this task. Of course, I figured it out fairly quickly when the need arosed, so to speak but a proper illustration could have saved me years of confusion and made me much less nervous and more prepared when that time came. Don't ssume that just because you have explained it, your child understands it. Also never assume that you child is comfortable asking the necessary questions or even that they know what questions to ask. And I guarantee you will not think of ever single possible thing that they need to know or way that they could misinterpret or misunderstand. And IMO 13 is definitely not too young to be discussing, picturing, and understanding such things especially in a scientific manner. -
Kids with OCD..Do you have one?
KidsHappen replied to caitlinsmom's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
My mother also had OCD as do I. OCD can be notoriously hard to treat especially if the patient herself has no motivation to do so. If it is not bothering your dd then I say try to get over it yourself and not let bother you. If it is a problem for her them consider seeking help. You can start with your family dr. or look for a counselor. Medicine is helpful and the fastest way to make progress. There is also a type of therapy that work somewhat with this but the name escapes me right now. -
Kids with OCD..Do you have one?

I have two dc who have the picking skin affliction. Both have been treated with new generation anti-depressants and anti-histimines. They use different anti-depressant but both have had success with this. This particular behavior is more of a complusion that and obsession. If your dd is still having problems with this it could be that she needs an adjustment in her medication. Good luck with this and be sure to talk to your family dr. and have them document this in her medical records because these particular kinds of sores can look like cigarette burns. -
Protein bars (I like the Power Plus Vanilla Yogurt flavor), protein smoothies, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, beef jerky, and kind of nut. My kids like all of these as well.

I'll second or third the corset recommendation. I have also see many might fine full length and full support boudoir gowns and robes. And they make tons of quite attractive and highly supportive basic undergarments. The first two items also provide the added attraction of making the tea pot easily accessible without the need to remove the cozy.

Sex ed for 9 yo ds?
KidsHappen replied to LG Gone Wild's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Perhaps this is one of those times when the illustration for the Galore Park Science books would be helpful. The books by Lennart Nilsson may also prove helpful: Life and A Baby is Born (I believe). -

New Englanders, what am I missing?
KidsHappen replied to Philothea's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We love a trip to Salem around Halloween. Also road trip during the leaf changing season. I will check my New Englan travel guides and see what else I can come up with. But New England is my dream location and I would live there if I could afford it.
