  1. Should I tell her it's ok to bring her dog/child?

Ok, so I know it's not helpful at all, but the fact that you said dog/child cracks me up. Every time I read any of the responses in my head I subsituted the word "dog" for "dog/child" and giggled to myself. They can't be serious, right?!?!

PS...I think it's a little odd that anyone would bring their pet to another person's house unless 1) they were out on a walk and just stopped by for a chat on their way or 2) the homeowner REQUESTED it.

  2. If I could only eat one Christmas cookie, I would just fall over in despair.

    That's all.

(My favorites are gingerbread cookies. And sugar cookies. And those little cookies with the Hershey's kiss pressed in. And shortbread fingers with peppermint flavoring. And....)

I don't believe in cookie descrimination. All cookies are welcome and highly encouraged here.

  3. Thanks everyone. Okay, so today, after having given him a few hours to calm down from this morning, we did History, and afterwards he started to write his history narration. I taped the paper down to the table, to much moaning and groaning, but no crying--just some jokey moaning. He kept his forearm parallel to the paper and his wrist straight-not hooked. It was harder for him, but not impossible (he was working in print, not cursive). The result was quite good, so he is happier.

I think cursive will be harder, and we may have to work on just doing circle and swoops for a while. He's not going to be happy about "going backward" but such is life. He's pretty proud that he didn't have a meltdown.

I think he needs a "Proud Lefty" t-shirt :) I've told him that Da Vinci and Obama are/were lefties, but he still hates it.

Would you mind taking a picture? I'm trying to picture how the paper aligns with his arm and I just can't figure it out. My DS4 is a lefty and although we're just starting with writing, I'd love to know how to help him in the future.

  4. Ok..so we're working through 100 easy lessons, but so far, I don't think I'm getting the concept and I just don't have faith in the program. It all started with e...why are we teaching that e says "e as in me"....not e as in egg? Does this program REALLY work like everyone says?

Is there anything out there you like more? Help me out! It's for my preschooler.

  5. Duh. I know it sounds really simple but it never occurred to me to do it this way.

Don't worry, I'm saying Duh to myself as I read this! I've wanted to incorporate work boxes too, but I'm in the same dilemma as you. They aren't independent yet, but there are fun review games and things I've been meaning to incorporate in.

Thanks for the lightbulb moment!!! Why didn't I think of this before??

  6. This year I started using Tapestry and she introduced me to the best method. I'll never stop using it.

She has you buy a plastic portable file box for each kid and load it with about 12 green hanging files and as many manila file folders. Each year is divided into 36 weeks of work which makes up 4 separate units. So, at the beginning of the year I set up the first 9 files labeled 1 through 9. I took ALL of their workbooks to the local office store and had the bindings cut off and the pages 3-hole punched. Then I divided each book into 4 parts. The first part of each book was then sorted into the first 9 files so that each of the files contained a week's worth of work. The rest of the workbook went into a file in the back of the plastic box - waiting to be sorted into the next unit's 9-weeks of files.

On Monday, the kids pull out their weekly file and sort it into their 3-ring notebook in one of the following sections: Language Arts, Math, Science or History. Then they take their weekly student assignment sheet and write the daily page assignments on it. They put this guide into their Lesson Plan section. This part is quick and easy for them and they like the independence that comes with making some days busier and some days lighter.

It has worked so well for us and the kids have taken to it like a chocoholic to M&Ms.

You wouldn't happen to have a blog post on this would you?? I'd love to see it in action!

    PS...what's Tapestry?
