  1. Tomato-basil soup, chicken enchilada casserole, twice baked potatoes (I do these a lot and they freeze well)
  2. Well, I live in the mountains of Colorado and there is not one provider that works everywhere. Many, many dead zones depending where you are. The more populated areas like Boulder down to Colorado Springs have great service. I just know where the dead zones are...also lots of roaming out here as well.
  3. I have had horses for years and an accidental extra feeding did no damage. Now, getting into a 50 pound bag and eating half of it....that is a different story. I think they will be OK.
  4. OK, what is so great about an Ipad? What do you like about yours better than your laptop?
  5. They are having him read low level guided reading books or low level decodables. He likes easy chapter books. They started testing him at level 15 which he passed, 16 he passed which is the last first grade level, and they tried 17 but he bogged down in the comprehension. He was 100% accurate in the reading part and completely fluent with expression. He understood the story as well but could not do what I said earlier. I know this because I got to read the score sheet. The teacher must be overwhelmed, but I commend her for recommending that he get tested. I think he could easily fit in one of the first grade reading classes to learn these comprehension tasks, but the school won't meet that need. And his teacher is not teaching comprehension at a late first grade/early second grade level. What frustrates Mom is the school does not seem to care he is bored or that he is really a great reader. They seem to have a bad attitude toward high achievers. I suspect she is going to find another schooling avenue!
  6. Thank you for the great info! Mom was having a hard time telling me what the school wanted...now I know and I can teach him those skills. The teachers at this school are rigid in their thinking and approach. Because he has not mastered the comprehension end of things in the way they want, they are keeping him reading low level books that drive him nuts because they are "baby books". By accelerate, I meant give him books and work at his level. I also think the teacher is overwhelmed with lots of kids with emerging skills and this boy is so far beyond (and the only one) that he is left to occupy himself...which means he gets into trouble. I know the DRA at kindergarten level does not have those same comprehension requirements so no one is teaching him to do this....so how in the world can they expect him to know how??? He is only 5 for heavens sake.
  7. I am working with an accelerated kindergarten child. He is reading atleast 2 years ahead. His teachers are concerned because he cannot retell a story in the way they want, he does not make text to self connections, and his predictions are not what the test says they should be. They are using something called the DRA and it says he is at the end of 1st grade, level 16. With me, his tutor, he can read third grade material with ease, enjoyment, and seems to understand it. What is this all about? They don't want him to accelerate because he is wiggley and immature. Yes, he is 5. He is also bored to tears and starting to act out. Can someone help me understand the DRA and what this school is doing?
  8. Ducks XXX XXX XXX 2 2 2 Sheep XXX 4 (I can't get this to format correctly..but for each unit of ducks you have 2 feet and for each unit of sheep you have 4 feet) I can see that for every 6 duck feet I have 4 sheep feet for a ratio of 6:4. That means I have 10 parts to the ratio which share the 2400. 2400/10 = 240. Therefore duck feet equal 240 X 6 (from the ratio) = 1440 Sheep feet 4 X 240 = 960 Check 960 + 1440 = 2400. Then divide the duck feet by 2 to get total ducks. 1440/2 = 720 Then divide sheep feet by 4 to get total sheep. 960/4 = 240. The difference between ducks and sheep is 480.
  9. Shaving cream on table tops or shower walls is fun to use as a writing surface.
