  1. Check Overstock and places like Sierra Trading Post before buying. I'm not sure 2 sizes up would be great, but I have done 1.5 sizes up many times without issue on a child with average, not wide feet.

    Trophy wife?

Just heard back from G. It was a male colleague who said it. She wrote back (I substituted blanks for the name). "____ thinks I'm nuts to still be thinking about this. Says it was a man but won't say who since it's been bugging me. Insists that the guy said it and was joking with the whole trophy wife thing but that the idea was that he thought I was attractive and was teasing _______ about it. Also told me to stop overthinking it! What's the verdict from that board?"

    Trophy wife?

She knows what it means! I think that's where the mixed feelings come in. She said her husband thought she'd be flattered, and she said he really thought the colleague's intention was complimentary.

    Trophy wife?

She's definitely the only wife her husband has had, and she's not that much younger than her husband (though she looks younger than she is, IMO).

    Trophy wife?

Hmm. I don't know if it has that connotation completely around here. It certainly can have that connotation, particularly the trading-in-for-a-younger-model part, but I have also heard it used equally as much as a kind of joking comment (especially among other SAHMs, about themselves). It probably depends on the intentions of the person saying it, and I'm getting this all third hand, so at best we can guess!

    Trophy wife?

Yes, I agree. The word choice was definitely not ideal! I do think that's part of what she's feeling.

    Trophy wife?

I think this is a lot of what G is thinking. She is a little self conscious of not working while the kids are teenagers, and I understand that since it describes me too (not working outside the home). I think some of her discomfort stems from feeling on some level that she should be doing something else, though I get the sense that she and her husband are both pretty happy overall with the status quo.

    Trophy wife?

You know, I didn't think to ask! I just assumed it was a man, but maybe it wasn't. I'll ask her and see if she knows. Since G doesn't work and is (IMO) a bit sensitive about that, I'm not sure a female colleague saying it would make it better, in her opinion!
  9. A friend of mine, G, told me recently that she was a little disturbed by a situation her husband had mentioned. Apparently after seeing her, someone who works with her husband commented that he had a trophy wife (meaning G). G does not know the exact words used by the husband's acquaintance. Husband didn't mention this at the time it happened, only weeks later, so G does not know what she was wearing, etc. on the day in question. Her husband insists that this was meant in a joking, yet very complimentary manner--the colleague thought G was very attractive and that G's husband is fortunate to have such an attractive wife. The husband insists that it was not said in a lewd way; it was just admiring. G is not sure how she feels about this. She is a SAH, homeschooling mother to teenaged children, mid-40s. She takes care of herself. The fact that she doesn't work outside the home is what makes her a little uncomfortable with the comment. She doesn't want to be seen as someone using her looks to mooch off her husband (who makes a very good living). On the other hand, she appreciates that someone found her attractive enough to mention it to her husband. She dresses in a stylish manner for someone in our area but does not wear much makeup or wear revealing clothing other than skinny jeans. How would you feel if you were G? I can see why it would both bother and flatter her.
  10. Yeah, the light doesn't go completely off, but it should go so low that it's not noticeable (even to someone as picky as me) in a room with a light on. Is yours still noticeably lit up in a normally-lit room? If so, there's something wrong with it, and I'd contact Amazon about exchanging it. Remember that the screen itself is much whiter than on the previous versions, though, so be sure it's not just greater background whiteness you're noticing, if that makes sense. The very lowest setting for light has no bars colored in and works well for me for reading in bed next to my sleeping husband. For that reason alone, I love my Kindle! I have spoken to a couple of friends who say that they can't ever use the lowest light setting, even when reading in a dark room because it's too dark for them, so the screen really should get very, very dim. The screen clarity should also be significantly improved over the previous version. I do have to say that I love my Voyage significantly more than I loved my Paperwhite. I find the touch screen more responsive, and I love having places on the sides of the screen to squeeze. The resolution is even higher than on the Paperwhite, and that was markedly better than my old Kindle with the keyboard. I use the Go To function from the menu at the top to skip ahead or back chapters, and then I just press the back button until I get back to where I started. I've had three different Kindles now, and I have found there was an adjustment period for me with each one where I mourned the old one.
  11. Here's what I don't get. Kate is a teacher. That means that she invariably gets unwanted gifts from her students or students' families at least once or twice a year, and quite possibly at random other occasions as well. If she can't handle setting an unwanted muffin aside, then she really needs to choose a different profession because unwanted items are just going to keep coming. When I taught, I got all sorts of things that I had no desire to own/drink/eat/use, and it really wasn't stressful at all. I just thanked the giver, appreciated the thought behind the gift, disposed of the gift as appropriate, and moved on with my life.
  12. Honestly, I had the best results by doing it myself. Even the much-lauded ladies at Nordstrom sometimes seem to still add 4 or 5 inches to the band measurement, leaving women wearing too-big bands that don't provide good support. Then the same clerks insist that when you buy a new bra, you should only be able to fasten it on the loosest set of hooks. That doesn't really work when the band is two sizes too large! A Bra That Fits at Reddit is a good resource for general fit information. That pages has a link to a bra calculator that uses five measurements. I found I got the same result when using the simpler fit information I found at this page. In that last link, the author talks a lot in her bra-fitting posts about trying on different band and cup sizes to find what fits best. I went to a store that had bands down to 30 and tried a bunch on. In a few minutes, it was clear I was wearing a bra with a band two sizes too big. A few months later I tried a specialty lingerie store near my house that carries 28 bands and was fitted into 28 or 30 bands, depending on the brand.
  13. Well, speaking as someone who's wearing a 30D right now (though I float between 28E or DD and 30 D or DD), wearing the proper bra makes a HUGE difference in how I look in clothes. I used to always feel a bit frumpy when I saw pictures of myself. I could never figure out why I looked so frumpy in pictures. I'd be standing next to similarly-sized friends, wearing the same type of t-shirt even, and yet they looked good, and I looked frumpy and lumpy. There was just something unflattering about my shape in 34 B (also the same as you!) bras. Getting the proper size made a world of difference in how clothes fit me. My top half looks much more slender and shapely, and less slouchy, bumpy, and frumpy. I was shocked at the difference, and now that I've seen it, I will not go back to the ill-fitting 34 Bs! It is sad that my days of cheap bras are over, but I'd rather pay more and look much better!
  14. After reading that, my only question is why do you have any thoughts at all about going back?
  15. Shun knives are awesome but expensive. They come in a range of sizes and are different for left vs. right hands, so if you go that route, you want to be sure to get the right kind. That's my favorite knife. I also have a Global (bought from Amazon) that I really like. The handle is a little small for people with large hands, but since I don't have that problem, I love it. Global is another Asian knife, and, like Shun, it will hold an edge a bit better than the German knives like Henckels. The angle of the sharpened part is also a bit different, so when honing it, you have to hold them at a slightly different angle. Since we've gotten a few Asian knives, I rarely use my Henckels and Wusthofs now. This is the Global chef's knife that I have and love.
  16. You're all making me very thankful for our few ticks and very low rate of Lyme disease. We're fortunate to be able to hike all year without worrying about ticks. I used to love hiking in the Midwest and New England, but I will no longer do it when I'm there out of fear of ticks and Lyme.
  17. Would it be possible to install a door at the bottom of the stairs? Having a door that you could close would help keep your basement substantially warmer. If you get tile, definitely get floor heat. It makes tile floors feel heavenly on bare feet, and the added cost is usually not much in comparison to the costs of the tile and tile installation. We have it in a couple of bathrooms, and I love it. If we ever get around to doing our basement, it will definitely feature heated tile.
  18. Well your co-op may not be out of line for your area since a 30-40% obesity rate would likely mean 60-80% overweight in total. As for the bolded, absolutely. I recently visited family in the Midwest. I heard a lot of, "You're way too thin!" and "You need to eat!" I am thin, but I'm not underweight. My BMI is around 19.5-20, and since I have a very small frame, that's appropriate for me. It looks scarily thin to my relatives and friends from a much-more-overweight area. Where I live, I never hear comments about me being too thin because the average is so different here. When relatives from there visit, they sometimes comment on how there are so many tiny people here!
  19. Well, I spent a few hours at my child's co-op yesterday and saw probably 100 homeschool mothers there. After reading this thread a bit yesterday, I paid attention to the ratio of overweight to normal/thin. I saw perhaps 1 in 10 women who were overweight, and none who looked to be obese. The majority were thin. Normal weight distribution varies greatly from area to area. For example, my countty's public health department states that the obesity rate is 13% in my (US) city. This is hugely different than the 30+% rates in many parts of the US. Are the women in my area just meant to be smaller than the women in your area? Clearly there are cultural as well as the well-known socioeconomic factors that play into what looks like average in different parts of the country.
  20. That looks beautiful! Any chance of a before shot too? I'm betting that it completely changed the look of the room. It really looks fabulous.
  21. Thank you for all the links and info!
  22. Yes, many hotels will have towel warmers in the bathrooms. I'd be surprised if he doesn't stay in at least a couple of hotels that have those. Perhaps he could save the jeans washing for when he's staying in a hotel with a towel warmer and then drape the jeans on that to dry.
  23. I never presoak my beans anymore with the pressure cooker. I'm just not great at planning that far ahead for a meal, and having the pressure cooker has allowed me to ditch the canned beans completely. I mostly make pintos, black beans, or garbanzos. I really like being able to include salt from the beginning because I think the beans turn out more flavorful when the salt is absorbed throughout the bean, rather than primarily in the broth. Would you mind sharing how you do your rice and potatoes, both for mashed and precooked? I really need to branch out from all my bean cooking! Also, what do you find easier about soaked beans? I had to play around with times to get the texture I wanted for the black and pinto beans, and in that process I occasionally had to bring the pressure back up for another ten or fifteen minutes because they weren't quite as tender as I wanted the first time they depressurized.
  24. I love my Instant Pot too. I use it a few times a week to cook unsoaked, dried beans. I have a Presto stove top pot too, but I much prefer the ease of the electric one. I love being able to set it up and then continue on my day, knowing that whatever I've put in there will be hot and ready whenever we're ready for it because the Instant Pot will keep it warm once it's done cooking.
  25. It looks incredibly like the landscape on the eastern edge of the Cascade mountains in Washington. It can go from desert-like to heavily timbered very quickly. The exposed areas are much dryer, but back in each valley, it quickly turns to heavy trees. There is a popular vacation lake there that ranges from desert to heavy timber, with very quick changes.
