  1. I can't speak specifically to 4th grade math but I've been using BJU math for K5 and 1st and now for next year 2nd. We LOVE it! It's mastery with lots of review.....we buy the review wb also. I have him do the review wb page as a starter then teach him his lesson and do his ws for that day. It has stories to go along with that my son enjoys. I tried to like Saxon but it was too much jumping around. I love that BJU math sticks to a topic for a chapter and then uses daily review of what they have already covered and chapter reviews to keep information fresh. The only downsides I see for BJU is that the teacher book is necessary but kinda pricy....yet full of information....but know that it's used in schools too so you have to pick through all the information to decide what you want to use. BJU Math is the one curriculum that I have loved from the start and don't plan on changing unlike many other curriculums that I can't say the same for. Good luck choosing!
  2. I just got Song School Latin so I haven't used it yet but you might take a look at it. It involves learning Latin through song and a short workbook that you could do mostly orally or on a white board. It would probably work great for you K and good review for your older. However, FYI their next series in Latin doesn't start till 3rd grade (Latin for Children). Good luck!
  3. I buy my curriculum including my manipulatives at Children's Books ( our local homeschool bookstore). You can buy online from them if you're not from SC. Here is their website..... http://www.homeschooldiscountproducts.com/servlet/StoreFront I think they have really good prices and the people there are really nice serving homeschoolers for years now.
  4. We just finished ours....doesn't it feel great to be all ready. I think we will be starting school next week in our new school room. Enjoy your year!
  5. I agree with the other posts......my son LOVES the Now I Can Read series. I got them at Barnes and Noble using my teacher discount card. They are controled readers so I would use them after teaching phonics. Good luck!
  6. I did CC last year but didn't really relate CC to our other work. Plan to match up CC and our work this year. I got Apologia Astronomy to do and will try to do it in 14 weeks. I was also wondering what to do for the rest of the year to go along with CC. Thanks for the recommendations. I did enjoy Answers in Genesis Life science last year....will have to check out what they have.
  7. For CC, you just need the VP Timeline cards not the VP materials to go along with the cards. If you want more information, you could buy their materials but it's not needed for CC. We use the cards to memorize 8 cards each week during new memory work time. Hope that helps!
  8. I throw in what we do. We LOVE Bob Jones Math. It's mastery with lots of review. You might take a look at it. http://www.bjupress.com/category/Math+for+Homeschool+HS?path=1060
  9. I am doing Astronomy this year with my sons. I believe that they have a lesson schedule included in the front of the notebook journal that you can buy to go with the book. I think it gives a weekly schedule with doing science two days a week.
  10. For my son in 2nd grade: Classical Conversations Math :Bob Jones 2 Phonics/Reading/Spelling: Discovering Intensive Phonics Grammar/Writing: FFL 1/2, WWE 1 & Bob Jones English History: SOTW 2, 3 & 4 (Coordinating with Classical Conversations) Science: Apologia Astronomy Bible: Awana Looking forward to starting soon!
  11. We've used Bob Jones for K5 and 1st. We love it. It's mastery based with cute stories, manipulatives and lots of review. You might take a look at their curriculum.
  12. I think that I've learned so much about Classical Education in the last year....still learning....that I will do things very differently next year with my kids. We are in a CC group and last year it was more of a place for my kids to go and learn what they could get while there. But now as I'm understanding Classical Education more and loving it....I will use it more as my curriculum this year. I will do LA and Math at home but then use our CC work to bounce off at home for the other areas. I got a list of SOTW to use with the History sentences. We are studying Apologia Astromony this year to go with the science. I think that CC can be just something you do or the basis for your homeschool.....it depends on how you want to do it. It will make our homeschool better this year to fully buy in to the CC model and make CC part of our everyday. Good luck!
  13. We love Bob Jones Math. It's mastery approach with fun stories, hands on stuff and review. You might check it out. Good luck picking!
  14. We love Bob Jones Math. It's done in units with lots of review and hands on ideas. It's scripted but designed for schools so I just adapt when things are for multiple kids. We have done K5 and 1st so now moving on to 2nd for next year.
  15. We joined a CC group last year and loved it! I can understand how much work it would be to start a group. However, you could do CC at home instead. You would get their Foundations guide, timeline cards and CD for you to do the memory work at home. We are doing Cycle 2 this coming year and then you'd be on track to join in when you're ready. As far as other curriculum, it depends on if you want to educate classically or not. This will be my 3rd year and I'm just getting my curriculum to line up more with the classical model instead of traditional classroom work. Good luck!
  16. We use Discovering Intensive Phonics by Reading Horizons. They have a computer program that my kids enjoy. Good luck!
  17. Focus on the Family has done several books on audiodrama. My sons got The Chronicles of Narnia and LOVE them. I think they have others like Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables among others. You might check them out!
  18. I did AAS1 with my son but decided to try out PR1 with him to do spelling, writing and reading all in one. Well, tried PR for a short time but didn't really love it. Maybe I don't see the whole picture. I liked how AAS discussed a rule and then had words that went with that rule. PR seemed to skip around with all different kinds of words so I had trouble seeing the pattern. Maybe it was just me as I have a friend who loves it. I would love to know from someone who uses PR how it works so that I better understand it....otherwise I just wasted $200.
  19. They were on sale when they first were released. However, I just bought mine at Practicum and they were not. You only need 1 set for this year (Ecology, Astronomy and Physics) and then each year the Scientists packet is used. So you wouldn't have to buy all 4 sets at once if you didn't want to spend the money. They are really nicely made....even better quality than timeline cards with being laminated. They also go perfectly with the science work each week with extra info. I'm excited to use them for next year.

  21. I've been using Bob Jones for the last several years. I love that it's not spiral like Saxon. That works better for my son. It has chapters that have topics with lots of review. You might want to check it out. Good luck!
  22. I just came across a program this spring that I'm really happy with so far. It's called Discovering Intensive Phonics and is an Ortho-Gillingham based phonics program. It has direct instruction and a computer program which you can use individually or both. I'm really happy with it so far as it is teaching my son the foundations of phonics. He's enjoying it and learning alot. You might want to check it out at http://www.readinghorizonsathome.com/default.aspx They are having a sale right now through Old Schoolhouse Magazine which is a great deal....25% off and free shipping. http://www.schoolhouseexpo.com/?page_id=6872 Good luck picking
  23. I just bought DIP this spring for my 1st grade son. We have used it for a few months and really enjoy it. I bought both the direct instruction and the computer program. I go thought the lesson with him and then have him work on the computer independently as review. I'm really impressed with it so far. It's got lots of information including boardwork, worksheets, assessments, games, etc.... My son was struggling to learn to read. I also have 2 other kids to teach as they get old enough. The next child I think will really do well with this program. Don't know if you already bought it or something else. It's not very popular in homeschooling yet but I hope more people give it a chance. I'm sure the price will make some look the other way but I really wanted a O-G program. This looked like the one and so far I'm very pleased.
