  1. I have a son who struggled with reading. Finally took him to the eye doctor and found out that he has one eye nearsighted and one farsighted. Made it hard for him to read but now with glasses he's doing much better. As far as a program....we use Discovering Intensive Phonics which is an Orton-Gillingham approach program. If you son likes the computer, I would recommend that. It's a great visual way to learn the phonics and is fun too. http://athome.readinghorizons.com/index.aspx I have both the print and the computer program. We use the print work together and then the child does the computer lesson as review. Hope you can figure out how to help your child. Good luck!
  2. I'm in the same place....trying to find a curriculum that I like for my upcoming 4th grader and 2nd grader. I'm looking at ScienceFusion as well. I'm also looking at Elemental Science (She has a new adventure biology series coming out this summer) and Aha! Science. So hard to figure out what to use! So I'll be :bigear:
  3. I have both FLL & PAL writing. Here is my opinion.....FLL does a great job teaching grammar. I've got 1 doing FLL 1 and another doing FLL 3. I think that they learn alot doing it and will have a solid idea about grammar after doing it. PAL writing has some aspects of grammar in it but I see it more as grammar that helps with their writing process. I have 1 who started PAL and will finish it next year, and 1 who is doing IEW SWI A. I think that I would say that they compliment each other nicely and I plan to use both. Next year we will be doing FLL2 & 4 along with PAL writing & IEW SICC A.
  4. We use AAS but I put the words into spellingcity.com for them to practice on their own. That helps me make it a little more independent throughout the week.
  5. I bought this Brother Laser printer this past year and have been very happy with it! http://www.amazon.com/Brother-Printer-MFC7860DW-Wireless-Monochrome/dp/B004QM99JG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1WJVPR3Y9ZVGL&colid=1XDZ1051O53JA I had an old inkjet that I use for color or I color in on the black & white pages for our math (since there are not that many of them). I have no regrets. Good luck picking!
  6. We started CC 3 years ago with a K4 and 1st grader. This coming year I'll have all three kids and my youngest will be starting in the K4 class. We love it! I can't say enough about my CC group. It provides great memory work and friendships for both the kids and myself. As far as the question if a K4 student can learn and do the memory work....YES! You'll be surprised just how much they can learn it. Often the memory work is set to music so if you listen to it, they can pick it up. They will not fully understand at that age what they are learning but that is the beauty of it too. They will have more years to gain the information and the next time around, they will learn it more in-depth. We believe in the program and plan to be in it for many more years, each year adding on to when we learned it the time before. My oldest son is actually excited to start cycle 1 again. He wants to do Memory Masters, which is where they get tested to know the information. We use CC as a starting point for our work and then build on it. CC offers practicums this spring/summer that you might want to check out. It's a 3 day event that is free for parents. This year ours is talking about Latin and the classical model. Also, I highly recommend visiting the CC group you are interested in joining to see how it works. That might give you a better idea if that group and CC would be a good fit for your child and yourself.
  7. My 3rd grade son who is 9 is using SWI A this year. Both your kids should do great with it. It's one of the things my son loves doing and watching Andrew teach is awesome. He teaches them step by step the process so it shouldn't be a problem for both of them. My son liked it so much that I'm trying to decide if we go on to the continuation course or if I can teach him the Ancient History book. We'll see what I decide as I'm off today to our local homeschool conference. By the way, my son had eye issues which hindered his reading and didn't have a lot of writing experience and has done great with SWI A. Enjoy!:001_smile:
  8. I'm going! Super excited and can't wait for 2 pm. Looking forward to being refreshed by the speakers and checking out all the cool curriculum. Enjoy ladies!

  11. We have a Josiah and a Jeremiah at our house.....love their names!
  12. YEAH:hurray: I've got a 9 year old who we discovered had a vision issue which was causing his delay. Sure is a relief when we can see progress....so happy for you!
  13. My kids LOVE the "Now I'm Reading" books by Nora Gaydos. Very cute with funny animal stories and colorful!
  14. Wow...it's so fun to see how similar but different 4th grade can be. Here is my son's plan (so far) for 4th grade. 15. I just saw this post...but I use Discovering Intensive Phonics for home with my boys. It's based on a school program but I adapt it to use at home. It's been a great program for my boys as they learn to see by "proving" words to show why words are the way they are. It's been great for them in a multi sense kind of way. I purchased the books as well as the computer program. We do the program first and then I let them review on the computer program. I originally bought it because my oldest son was having trouble reading. Later found out that he had visual issues. However, I still enjoy it with both boys...and a daughter starting soon. If you have specific questions...I'd be happy to answer them. Just let me know.....if you're even still interested in it....as this is an older post.
  16. :grouphug: I'm so sorry to hear how life is hard for you right now. I'll pray for you today for that peace and encouragement!
  17. I'm so sorry for you. We had to put our beloved beagle of 10 years down in Oct so I understand part of your pain. We thought we'd just live life with our one dog but we only lasted about 6 weeks before we had another beagle join our family. Praying that your family can remember all the good times and maybe share your heart with a new dog in the future. :grouphug:
  18. We just started lapbooks but how we've done it is to learn the information and then put it in the lapbook. We're working on one for our Classical Conversations Memory Work, The Human Body, Presidents and History of the 20th Century. My boys are enjoying them. They are also great to look at for review of the material later. Enjoy!
  19. My kids (9,6 &3) right now LOVE "Where's my water?" Very cute app about an alligator who needs you to help the water get to his bathtub. Very entertaining app but makes them think about physics! Our other favorite Apps: Angry Birds Cut the Rope Balliland XL Teach Me Toddler, Kindergarten and 1st grade Word Wagon & Park Math Word Bingo & Math Bingo Rocket Math Stack the States & Countries
  20. I'm so sorry! We got news several months that our dog had cancer. She only lasted another 2 weeks. We so miss her as I know you do your sweet dog. They are part of the family for sure. My hubby doesn't want another pet but we all are missing her and our other dog is kinda sad being by himself...so we're working on him. Maybe a new dog for Christmas! Hope when you get your new dog it can fill a little of the void that is left in your loss. God bless!
  21. Congrats! We had a beagle/basset mix....and she was the sweetest dog! Hope you enjoy your new family members.
  22. I started out with a iPod touch last year....so when my dell died....I convinced my hubby to let me buy a MacBook Pro. I LOVE it! I just recently got my dell working again but don't like to use it and it was a total pain to get everything reloaded. I am glad I have my Mac and love it esp since I can sync my iPod with it. My only downside I've found is that I can't do HST + but I just use my kids PC for that. I was hoping that the OLLY program someone created for Mac would be like HST + but it's not, at least not yet. So for now I do everything on my Mac except for my record keeping for school. Only wish I had the money to buy an iPad too! Don't forget if you buy certain items, you can get a homeschool discount. I got a good deal on my MacBook Pro that way.
  23. I put cherry cabinets, black granite countertops and a stainless undermount sink in my kitchen and LOVE it!
