  1. At the end of the lesson, there will be a page that says what the reading is.  It is not on every lesson, so it probably hasn't started yet by lesson 3.  You can also go into the account and look up the list on the right hand side under Documents.  It states what week and what book/pages for each day.  I am using it for my two children, one for level 1 and one for level 2.  It will be their reading books so that I can tie History and Reading together.  They will complete the work after the history lesson.  Some of the level 2 books have literature guides they can complete.

  2. I'm the opposite from the above post.  I went from AAS to Spelling Workout.  It got harder to keep up with AAS as it's teacher intensive where I could give my boys their SW book to do more on their own.  They practice their words by using the Spelling City app/web site.  I like too that SW has things that they might see in a standardized test like editing and different kinds of activities using the words.  I liked the idea of AAS but it just didn't work for us.

  3. If you look at the history sentences for Cycle 2...they are Middle Ages only for the first half and then they go to Wars of more modern times. I always get frustrated trying to follow another curriculum with it since CC history sentences are not in chronological order. So this year, I realized that I need to base it off of our new wonderful Timeline....so we are coordinating the timeline with Mystery of History Vol 2/Story of the World Vol 2. I think that will finally help me feel like they go together!

  4. From the Sassafras Facebook page

"The second book in the series will be Anatomy and we expect to release it in late spring of this year. After that, I can't give exact release dates, but we are going to keep working on the project until it's complete. The series as a whole will cover zoology, anatomy, botany, geoscience, geology, astronomy, chemistry and physics. The order will be released as we release information about future volumes. If you have anymore questions, please let me know."

  5. Hi all,

I have been looking at science curriculums all day in hopes of something my dd 8 can do on her own next year. I found this and I am thinking this could be the one! Can anyone tell me when this came out? I am aware that they will be coming out with a total of 8 and I am wondering if the 2nd level would be out soon. Also she will be 4th next year. Would it be challenging enough or is it open ended where it could be as challenging as we want it? A little history....she reads at a 6-7th grade level, she enjoys doing research, and reading. We have done My Pals Science 3a & 3b last year and liked it but could not find 4a and 4b. We ended up trying MBTP science and I am not keeping up....too hands on for me right now! Any thoughts apreciated!

Sassafras Vol 1 came out this year and she is currently working on Vol 2 (Anatomy) but has not stated a release date yet. Your dd could read the book on her own and fill out the logbook. Then she could use the Animal Encyclopedias to expand the info on the animals. It's set up that each chapter has a location that they travel to where they learn a little about the location and then the expert helps them learn about 2 animals of that place. There are extra pages where she could do research of topics related to that chapter to further her experience. There are also lists of living books that she could read with each chapter and experiments to try out as well. My 2nd and 4th grade boys just love it! You can see samples on their website and Paige, the author, is very happy to answer questions. We're excited for book 2!

  6. So far there is no discussion of creation/evolution or old/young earth. It's just an adventure story about 2 kids who zipline through space to different locations to collect information about the animals. These things have not come up and I think she's tried to keep it neutral so that it can be used by anyone. That way you can discuss it based on what you believe.

  7. Elemental Science has a new curriculum called Sassafras Adventure....which my kids love and beg to do! It's an adventure series where two siblings race to different places on an invisible zipline. At each location, the learn a little about the location and 2 animals. We read the story, notebook and do activites. It's really fun and we're learning a lot! Book 2 is coming out hopefully this spring/summer and is on Anatomy.

  8. We LOVE Sassafras here and my kids (10,7, & 5) ask for it first thing! They love the story because it is full of adventure while learning all about the animals and places. We're doing a chapter a week and taking our time so we'll make it last a good bit of the year. We read the first day about the place they have zipped to and fill in the info for that place in our notebook. Then the next day we read about the first animal and notebook. The third day, we read the rest of the chapter about the second animal and notebook. Then that leaves the 4th day (since one day we do coop) for activities.

We can't wait for Vol. 2 which is Anatomy. It doesn't fit with what our coop studies next year but they love science so much the Sassafras way that we'll keep going with it. Hopefully, she'll keep making them so we can keep enjoying science while we learn!

  9. Yes....book 2 has been announced and it is human anatomy.

The SCIDAT logbook is basically the student pages without any explanation. If you want the answers for them, then you need the guide. You can do it without the guide but it would require you to come up with all the answers for the student logbook. They are found mostly in the story but I find the guide very helpful so I'm not having to search for answers. Also, sometimes my kids copy the work needed from my guide. The guide has information on the chapter summary, habitat, animals, extra encyclopedia readings, living book suggestions, experiments, vocabulary, copywork/dictation, additional activities along with 2 and 5 day week schedules. I bought the hard copy of the novel and guide and then the PDF files for their student logbook. This has been a great way for us. You could save money and buy them in the combo packs depending on what form you want them in.

If you children are anything like mine....who love adventure stories.....they will love this series. It kinda reminds me of Adventures in Odyssey or Jonathan Park (but is not religious) or a better version of Magic Tree House. The story is great and they learn all about the animals along the way!

  10. The guide gives you all the information that goes in your SCIDAT logbook. Also, it includes some extra activities that you wouldn't have without it. It can be done without the guide. It would just require more work on your part to come up with the answers. We are really enjoying it this year and my kids ask to do it first! We are excited that she's working on book #2 as we speak.

  11. We have Wii (the old one) and Xbox. We bought the Xbox because we cut the cord from cable. We now just watch over the air, stream Netflix and Xbox i the only one who has an ESPN app - which is why my husband really bought it. We enjoy the Kinects games as you are the controller. It's not always perfect but gets you moving for sure. I think that Xbox is better for the older kids than the Wii but they are both fun.

  12. We LOVE TJ! My kids love it because they have a stuffed frog named Reedy (named after the local river that runs through town) and if they find him, they get to pick a treat out of the treasure chest. Makes for a fun visit!

    We love

    Orange Chicken

    Fried Rice & Veggies

    All their frozen veggies

    Esp Asparagus

    Granola Bars

    Toothpaste

    Pizza dough and sauce

    Chicken Sausages

    Mint Tea Bags

    Fresh Bread

    Jo Jo cookies

Star Dark Chocolate Cookies (Christmas time)

    Blue cheese dip

    Kale

I'm sure there is more...but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

We are lucky to have Costco, Trader Joes and Whole Foods within 4 traffic lights of each other so I enjoy a day of shopping at them all for my healthy treats!
