Anyone hosting an Exchange Student?
Jennifer in NH replied to Jody's topic in General Education Discussion Board
How wonderful! I have not yet returned the favour so to speak. I was an exchange student for all of 1981 (that dates me..oh well). I am hoping that when my children are a little older..teens..we will host a student. -
If you have a schoolroom, what color is it?
Jennifer in NH replied to JessaMae's topic in General Education Discussion Board
a coffee/beige colour. I love it. -
Inappropriate, tacky, or ?? comment...
Jennifer in NH replied to Brilliant's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It is icky, tacky and inappropriate. Creepy. I think you handled it very well. -
Do you like storms?
Jennifer in NH replied to OnTheBrink's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I love them, but I have a healthy respect for them too. -

Stephen King books for a 14 year old.
Jennifer in NH replied to Oney Jones's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I read Salem's Lot whernI was about 14. I go to bed for months without making sure all the windows were drawn, but I loved it anyway and then read The Shining and Pet Cemetary soon after. ;) I have no idea about his newer ( after 1990) stuff. Very scary though, but I did love it. -
Even though I did answer your original thread by giving a personal example, I go by " 3. Based on a principle of some sort (e.g. There is a principle saying that x behavior might hurt others, so you would refrain from it because others might be hurt rather than based on whether you personally would be hurt) " In general I try to go by the rule of, "if you don't want everybody to read it, don't post it"

How long are your breaks ...
Jennifer in NH replied to a topic in General Education Discussion Board
What you are doing sounds just about perfect to me. I need a break after explaining math to my dd9 for the nth time. If my break is too long though, I find it harder to get back into teaching mode. I try for about 15 minutes between subjects with a couple of 1/2 hours in between and an hour off at lunch time. At the end of the day I don't think so much about how much more we could have done but how much sooner we would finish. Then I try to remember that my children learn better after they have had a small break. Some days we finish everything and some days we don't. -
I think it is rude. 3 of my sisters get together once a month for lunch and always advertise about it on FB and never invite me or another sister..but then chat away about their wonderful lunch with their sisters etc... very rude in my opinion, no matter what the reason is for their excluding us, it does seem to be rubbing salt in the wounds, and I expect better from women in their 50's. I would feel the same way if it was someone else I knew IRL and it seemed in your face, "we had a great time..too bad you weren't invited. " ETA: But I'm not bitter or anything. lol:lol:

For me it was because once I decided that I beleived in the Divinity of Christ, I needed to be in the Church He founded. I couldn't cherry pick what I liked and didn't like, it wasn't up to me, it was up to Him. God spoke to me for years and years before I really listened and did what he asked. Good luck to you!

I think I have been averaging about $1,500 each year total for 2 children.. Some of that will be used for my 3rd child. Some of it will be sold eventually to recoop some costs. I could do it for quite a bit less if we made good(and consistant) use of our library. What others might pay for fad shoes and different outfits for school, I spend on books..it is an addiction. My kids do have clothes and shoes though.

Thank you all! great replies. I cannot imagine not knowing what level my child was in math, and as for neighbors...the few we have don't speak to us ever since I mentioned that we home educate our children.:glare: But I cannot talk curricula with anyone who doesn't homeschool, because I have seen that glassy stare one too many times. :001_smile: Jenny

or afterschooling: I was wondering what it is that brings you to, or keeps you interested in this board? I'm not really asking this of people who used to homeschool and have made good friendships here, but of those that never homeschooled. I am honestly curious. Any takers? and don't get me wrong..I think this board is interesting..I can barely ever go to the K-8 forum without wanting to purchase some new curricula or other.

Should Confederate soldiers be honored
Jennifer in NH replied to nevergiveup's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Of course they should. -
I am glad you found a program that fits so well with your family. I think your positive experience with CLAA is wonderful, and I have no problem with that part of your post. You obviously really like it, and I am not involved with it. I looked it over last year after Drew and Chris mentioned it, but did not go any further than that. Personally, doing LCC on our own works well for us. The only part of your post I had a real problem was this one, "The funny thing to me is that these two purport to base their opinions on their experience with the CLAA, as insiders, as it were. BUT, neither of them were enrolled in the CLAA once it was officially launched in he fall! Nor, I suspect, did either of their children make any meaningful progress in the courses offered there (they weren't around long enough to do so). So, how can they be informed about the CLAA and what it does? The fact is that the website, the Student Forum, the Stadium, and much of the programs that are integral to the CLAA were not even in place in the form they are now when those two people were enrolled in the CLAA... ...I have read Mr. Cain's 10 page e-mail critique of the Mr. Michael. It is full of inaccuracies (if I were harsh like Mr. Michael, I might call them lies). But, honestly, I wonder where they come from. Is he talking about the same man that I've been dealing with all year? " I'm not sure how you see that as not calling Mr. Cain a liar. and if the other person you mention is 8filltheheart, she never purprted to have anything to do within CLAA, but I respect her opinion on matters of Catholicism and education in general. again though, it is nice you have found a program that fits your family. and now I will :auto:

It sounds like you could write copy for CLAA. This reads just like a brochure. I would be careful about insinuating that Mr. Cain is a liar, though. I am positive that no one who has read his many posts here and elsewhere would ever conclude that he lies. Just the opposite is true. I tend to agree with Cathmom that this thread has been interesting but I find the people who disagree with CLAA to be people who I have been communicating with on this board for a long time and about many subjects. I have never found any of them to be any less than extremely helpful. I do find some of the defense of CLAA to be a bit cultish. I love some of the programs I use, but I don't see the need to attack detractors. I too, when looking at new programs, like to hear from people who like it and those who don't.

I'm going to voice my opinion for low carb as well. Mine went from the low 400's to 220 in this way. my hdl is up near 90 and triglycerides are in the 30's, so I am very happy being at 220 and not on any meds. I suggest checking the Atkins book, and the Protein power lifeplan, or just protein power out of the library and reading them and then talking with a doctor. you are going to get 50 differing opinions on this board alone. Good luck ETA: The book by Gary Taubes, "Good Calories, Bad Calories" is a very good scientific look at separating all the conflicting advice out there by way of all the different medical studies over the past 70 years or so. I found the book a fairly easy read and fascinating.

What word sends you over the edge?
Jennifer in NH replied to PollyOR's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm hoping that you are younger than I am and it just happily went out of fashion after the 1970's. :001_smile: -
What word sends you over the edge?
Jennifer in NH replied to PollyOR's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Having grown up just outside Boston and now living in NH, I can assure you that the proper spelling on that last word is "pissa" you really don't pronounce the r. having said that..I think I had blocked that word from my memory. I hate it more than any word I can think of! I don't usually say, "wicked" as in, "wicked neat!" or "ah, that was wicked cool!" but it does occasionally slip out. -
