  1. My 11th grade son has been struggling through Algebra I for 3 years. I’ve tried different curriculum and a tutor. I am not sure what to do as our state requires Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, and 1 other math to graduate. He does well with Geometry. Any advice?

I recommend that you work with him, meaning that you present the material, scaffold the practice problems, and ensure that he understands by assigning independent work.  A tutor isn't going to do this unless they meet with your son five times a week.  And even then they might not do what is needed because most tutoring is backfilling behind the actual teacher.  This is different from actually teaching from scratch.

  3. Any moms looking to award credits to the transcript for an 8th grader? And if so, what kinds of credits? I'm looking at biology, writing and possibly ASL.

I gave my son (who is now in college) credit for all math taken prior to high school (Algebra I and geometry), lit & comp, geography, and chemistry.

  4. Why can't high school biology be enjoyable and not quite so technical?

Just saying...some of us think that the cell, molecular bio, and genetics parts of biology ARE the fun parts and that the organismic stuff is what's unbearably tedious. :)

Good luck to her! My son is also taking it today, though he is in 9th grade, so not for real yet.

  6. Has anyone studied the correlation between application season and premature graying?

Yes! That and teaching my son to drive were the most graying activities.

  7. I think the American health care system may actually be designed to kill us all early through stress and anxiety.

It's like a parasite. It'll kill you, but not before it sucks you dry.

  8. Ds just explained that he doesn't like jow stressful procrastinating is. "Perhaps we should plan and start earlier." I am SO glad that has finally gotten through!

  9. I wish we had run with Derek Owens for math earlier in Sailor Dude's high school career.

  10. Feeling so good about the kids' test scores from our first year homeschooling! Much improvement in math!! The hard work is paying off.

  11. Thank you to the person who recommended The Housekeeper and The Professor. Such a beautiful, meaningful book!

  12. Shocked! Sailor Dude and his skipper just qualified for a national-level regatta. We think this is good???

  13. Yippee! I just found out that my son's chemistry class at the CC will be using Zumdahl!

  14. If your appendix was removed 10 days ago, you would recognize that dodgeball was a contact sport, right? That's because you are not a 17 yo boy. Arrgh.

BTW, I totally get it about 17yo boys and their decision making ability.

  16. Apparently Jean Piaget was wrong about kids realizing the conservation of liquid at age 6-7 because my almost 11 y.o. got tripped up by a Singapore Math volume question involving that property. Sigh...

Let me guess, was this the sentence? "The was his name."

Yes--once when I was about 5, I had the same thing happen, only instead of cars, it was rocks.

  22. SO tired of being sick! I knew it was a mistake to send Colin to a nursery school that had a dancing petri dish as its mascot.

All preschools should have that mascot!

Santa has never thought about that before, but now that he is, he's thinking yes!
