My son wants to study fish this coming year for science. Has anyone seen a unit already put together for such a study (books, lesson plan, schedule)? I just don't have time to put one together on my own, so if anyone knows of one on fish or marine biology please enlighten me. ? This is for upper elementary and this child will only apply himself to things that interest him. ? Thanks!!

Health Curric to go along with Heart of Dakota
MamaChristina replied to tmstranger's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If you want something cheap that gets it done you can look at Schoolaid health on the Milestone books website. It is both the text and workbook in one for like $5. -
I don't necessarily think Simply Grammar would be a complete adult grammar review. It is rather light. For a more thorough review and an all around terrific resource to own would be the English grammar handbook Christian Light sells. My high schoolers refer to it all the time as do I when teaching my younger students.

something from a Christian perspective that will last. I would like a brief explanation of the event, and some resources listed. Preferably a four year rotation. I would also love to find a quality hardback elementary history/middle school spine written from a Christian perspective that could be done in a four year rotation with short easy to schedule lessons. If anyone knows of anything let me know. I haven't had much time to research things the last couple years. Thank you!!! :)

Welcome to the boards! My husband is from Romania and we have helped a couple families there get started with homeschooling. We homeschool our own 8 children as well. We are headed back for a visit in August. Where are you located? My husbands village is kinda between Oradea and Cluj.

Memoria Press Classical Phonics
MamaChristina replied to Blessed mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I've used the MP K for 2 children so far and have really liked it. I did not start StoryTime Treasures right away though. I thought the books would be too hard. We did copywork and read other things. Then when we did start StoryTime Treasures we trade read. I would read a few lines and then he would read a few. It only took a couple days and he could read the whole book himself. I was really surprised. My advice is to try it at a slower pace and see what happens. -
claluck, you are so lucky. I wish I would have downloaded it when I had the chance!!! I loved the quotes, scripture, and poems she chose for the copywork etc. And, I love the writing instruction....it works for us and I can't afford IEW. I'm so disappointed.

They were written by Kathryn Louis and available at Milestones Academy. We've been using the first level and I would love to continue, but they are no longer available. Can anyone help me, please. Thank you, Christina

Horizons Pre-Algebra Lessons Too Short - compared to CLE?
MamaChristina replied to a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I used Horizons at the lower level (3 and 6). Our experience was that there wasn't enough review. My guy forgot stuff between reviews. I went back to CLE. I'm sure there are some kids who don't need as much, but mine did. -
Reviews for Math in Focus
MamaChristina replied to A home for their hearts's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I bought 2 or 3 of the MIF student textbooks off Amazon for 99 cents. They were brand new. We use CLE, but are using MIF for enrichment and for summertime math. -
If you've done a hybrid of Ambleside online
MamaChristina replied to roanna's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I like checking boxes too. There are a lot of yahoo groups for Ambleside that have tons of schedules with boxes to check for each year. I have a whole notebook full. Just pick the one you like best. I like the ones Abigail shared too. -
Going from CLE math to Math in Focus
MamaChristina replied to jer2911mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We use CLE and I have the first three levels of MIF. I'm actually thinking of having my kiddos do MIF over the summers for fun. Then we can have the best of both worlds. -
A pastor's criticism of homeschoolers
MamaChristina replied to warmthnstrength's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Wow, this guy should be embarrased at how ignorant he is! I wonder how many homeschoolers he actually knows well. Our former church hired a guy like that. Obviously, we don't attend there anymore. -
Which level of Dancing Bears?
MamaChristina replied to A home for their hearts's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
In your situation I would start with Dancing Bears A. There are some exercises at the beginning of the book that help children learn to blend, plus they start with other sounds like er, sh, ch, th, or, etc. early on in book A as well. I'm using it with a struggling ds this year and it has really helped. -
Why Ambleside over TOG and visa versa?
MamaChristina replied to littlebylittle's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Okay, here is a big reason to do AO, the history selections are SO much more engaging!!!!! At least they have been for my children. I have tried TOG, SOTW, Veritas Press, MFW, and HOD and for some reason my children just LOVE the AO books over everything else. They love Our Island Story, 50 Famous Stories Retold, the Synge books, etc. When we've tried other programs someone always says, "Mom, do you remember when we were reading (some favorite book from AO)? Can we please do that again? We always end up returning to AO. If you want to add in a hands on element it would be super easy to do by adding History Pockets or some Time Travelers from Homeschool in the Woods. Whatever you choose, just have fun reading to them. -
ACE PACEs or School of Tomorrow
MamaChristina replied to This Mama Teaches's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I was taught half of my school years with ACE. It is behind and I remembered facts for the tests and totally forgot about them after that. The Social Studies, Science, and English is okay. If you are going to try it PLEASE steer clear of the Math. It's is super behind and your children will not understand math. After I finished ACE elementary math (getting fairly good grades) I went to a new school and flunked pre- algebra twice. I've really loved CLE math for my own children. -
Welcome! No trouble at all!!! :)

You are supposed to listen to/sing the VP History song once a week. I have just been going through the cards a couple times a week and so far that has been enough. We only do the actual history portion three days per week and it doesn't take long at all....maybe 20 minutes three days per week. The writing is what takes the longest, so you won't have to worry about that. The geographt is done 2 days per week and doesn't take much time either. It really depends on how much you want to do. You could easily add or take away, so, YES, it really is what you make it.

I had a lot of the books on hand. So far we have used the History Pockets. I have the two Eyewitness books which are great! I bought The Great Wonder and like that. I switched out Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt for "Boy of the Pyramids" as I thought it would be better for the younger ones. I love the books that were chosen for this and will do very little switching. I don't have The Code of Hammurab, which would be boring for youngers, so I'll probably slip in "Secret of the Scribe" or some other interesting book from the time period. I may switchout "Shadow Hawk" as it will be boring for the littles, and use "God King" instead. It's requiring very little tweeking from me which I'm liking. The Geography is VERY appropriate for early primary and other ages. Right now we are quite fascinated with learning about the Marsh people of Iraq. My kiddos have been clamoring to get near me for these readings and the pictures. It's been a lot of fun! Yay, I would skip the writing for ones so young as well, and use it for the next rotation. :) Let me know if you have anymore question. :) .

I have to say that we LOVE it!!! The history is very cohesive and easy to do. I'm using it with grades K, 1, 3, and 6. It has been easy to implement for such a wide range of ages and for the first time, I don't feel like we have to "do it all." There is plenty for everyone. BTW, we are using the Ancient History plan. The Writing with History is excellent and laid out really well for ease of use and understanding. I'm using it with my 3rd, and 6th grader only. I have to say that our favorite is the Geography with History book!! Oh we LOVE this geography!!! We've been homeschooling for 13+ years and this is hands down the most interesting geography course I've come across. It is well written and the activities aren't dull or pointless. My children are really loving it and I'm enjoying teaching it. I don't mind answering any questions if someone wants to know any particulars. :)

I got Lymes while I was pregnant and three of my children have had it. Thankfully we caught it early. Children and pregnant woman are given amoxicillin. Insist on a months worth of it as the life cycle of the spirocete is 28 days. Doxycyclin is too hard on childrens bones. The amoxicillin worked and we are all Lyme free. Definitely hit it hard as it's such a nasty disease.
