  1. For those who have loved Jacobs Algebra and Geometry... What did you use for Algebra 2 and beyond? My daughter has never loved math, but she just "gets" the way that Jacobs teaches. She is LOVING geometry this year! But, unfortunately, Jacobs doesn't have any higher level math books. Any recommendations???
  2. I'm looking ahead to a math path through high school. My daughter is finishing Jacob's Elementary Algebra this spring. She is not a huge fan of math, but she really enjoyed Jacob's. Unfortunately, there is only Jacob's Geometry. Where would one go after that? Is there a book that is similar in style for Algebra 2, Pre-calc and Calculus? And fyi, we tried Saxon last year. Neither of us was a huge fan. We did Abeka through 5th grade, but just tired of the review and amount of busywork. We floundered around until we found Jacob's, which we both loved. Any advice is appreciated :)
  3. I haven't been able to follow this group this year (I think the last time I checked was week 22 or something). Partly because we were too busy building a house. Partly because it makes my To-read list too long!!!! I wanted to share my 2013 list, though. Maybe it will remind me to check the post later (and increase my to-read list for 2014 to an unattainable length!). Planning to cut back on Facebook, too, so that should free up some time for Book a Week 2014! 53. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon 52. Snow Hunters by Paul Yoon 51. 4. Thanks for the advice!!! I forgot about the videos. I think I will give them a try at the beginning of the week, then if she still feels overwhelmed, I'll probably try SM5. Thanks again!
  5. I have Saxon 7/6 here, and it looks like all review of what she has done. Maybe the last 10 lessons would be new material. That's the issues I was having with Abeka. The first semester is all review. We spend half the year waiting to learn something new. And even then, it didn't seem like there was much new in Abeka 5 second semester... Maybe I should look at Singapore 6 or 5? Or go with Life of Fred Pre-algebra only? Or would Saxon 8/7 be good? Or I even have Lial's Basic College Mathematics? Any other thoughts?
  6. I need some advice. My daughter is very bright, but she does not enjoy math as much as language arts. She gets it. But she makes many careless errors. We've done Abeka from 1st grade (when she was Kindergarten age) to 5th grade last year (she was 4th grade age). This year, she begged me to not do Abeka again - because the worksheets are very long - 2 sides with lots of review each day. Last year, 5th grade Abeka, there were very few new topics, and she seemed bored, too. This summer, she has been finishing Life of Fred Decimals and Percents (she did Fractions with 4th grade Abeka, Decimals and Percents with 5th grade Abeka). After Decimals and Percents, LoF moves to Pre-Algebra. And since she didn't struggle at all with math concepts last year in Abeka, I thought maybe we could jump up to a pre-algebra program this year... So, I bought Art of Problem Solving Pre-algebra. I LOVE IT! But, I am more math oriented than she is. She was excited at the thought of having few problems to do each day... BUT, we are 3 days in to the book, and she is really struggling. I had to explain concepts to her multiple times, and I still don't know that she understands it. They are teaching the "whys" of addition...but all the letters - a, b, c... - confuse my daughter. I worked through AoPS this summer, so I know it doesn't get easier. As much as I love the program, I am thinking that it just won't work for DD. So, any advice? I am also intrigued by Elementary Algebra by Jacobs...but now I worry about spending $$$ on another math program that may be too advanced... I hate to go back to Abeka...but I know Abeka, and I know she can handle it... Hive - please help!!! Kathy
  7. I really enjoyed The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I read it because I had seen others here were reading it, so I'm sure there are others who can chime in, too. I gave it 4 of 5 stars. I loved the challenging vocabulary - I like I book that you need to pay attention, look up words, etc. So, for me, I actually read the book and the e-book on my Kindle at the same time so I could easily look up words, yet still spend most of my time with the lovely feel of a book in my hands :001_smile: The book also made me realize that I know nothing of the study of philosophy...oh, how I long for the days when I can study whatever topic strikes my fancy - but now, off to chase the 5 kids! Kathy V.

This isn’t What it Looks Like by Pseudonymous Bosch 1. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams My favorite so far was The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton. I just started The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani yesterday. Not sure what to expect there. Anyone read it? Kathy
  9. I don't post often, but check here often for reading suggestions... Just had to share the latest book I read. It was AWESOME! Best book I've read in years!!! http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Keeper-Novel-Kate-Morton/dp/1439152802/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1365382608&sr=1-1&keywords=secret+keeper The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton I can't even explain how good this book was. WWII, murder, family secrets, twists I would have never expected. If anyone else has read this book, I'm dying to discuss it with someone. It was just A-MAZE-ING.
  10. My GBG triplets just turned three :001_smile:
  11. Welcome to ONE-derland, as they say on The Biggest Loser :001_smile:
  12. Just finished The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach this morning. Interestingly enough, it contains more references to Moby Dick than I have ever seen in a book! I bought Ahab's Wife, but now I'm thinking I need to read Moby Dick first...see what this whale is all about :tongue_smilie: I'm also happy to report that, because of recent surgery and lots of recovery time, I've caught up on my reading for the year!!! Yeah me :001_smile: 11. The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach 10. The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr 9. Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay 8. Longing by Karen Kingsbury 7. Learning by Karen Kingsbury 6. Leaving by Karen Kingsbury 5. Some Wildflower in My Heart by Jamie Langston Turner 4. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs 3. 11/22/63 by Stephen King 2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Lasrsson 1. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
  13. Still running behind (it's too soon to be behind!!!), but I did something to catch up this week - 2 books. 3. 11/22/63 by Stephen King - very interesting. I seem to get hung up on number of pages, but for me to read an 850 page book in 1 1/2 weeks means that the book is good! 4. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I'm joining the group that is not a fan. I thought some of the pictures were interesting, but I found the writing vulgur and immature. The only thing that was good about this book was that I was able to get through it in 4 days so I didn't waste too much time on it! Off to read Some Wildflower in My Heart by Jamie Langston Turner for my bookclub this month. She's one of my FAVORITE authors, and this is a re-read for me, so I know I will enjoy this one :001_smile: Kathy
  14. My review of 1Q84 - I loved it...and I hated it. I loved it – obviously I must enjoy a book to read 925 pages in 21 days. The story was interesting, I enjoyed the writing, I even liked when I was thinking about how it was translated from Japanese and things sounded funny to an American. But, I hated it. There were so many graphic – and unnecessary – s*xual scenes, it makes me uncomfortable to tell others IRL that I read the book, let alone to tell them that I liked it. It was such an interesting story, with a pleasurable ending (though there is room left for a 4th book), I hate that it was ruined for me by all the s*x… Kathy

  18. Anyone else read The Road by Cormac McCarthy? It was my read for this week. Quite disturbing in parts. Overall, though, I felt there wasn't much point - no lesson learned, no conclusion... Anyone else read this book and want to discuss? Kathy
  19. Okay, I've been reading, but just haven't kept up with posting...BUT, the book I finshed today was so awesome, I just had to share! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows What an awesome book! It was one of those books where I will miss the characters now that I am done with the book! I'm afraid to even start another book today because I don't know that I can come up with another one that I will enjoy this much... Any suggestions???? Kathy Books Read in 2011: 33. 20. This may not be a popular opinion...but I don't think you will get too much out of it. I am a runner, too, and Zumba didn't do anything for me. I actually taught Zumba for a year, but I quit because I just didn't have the time to invest in a class that wasn't helping my fitness level (and I was pregnant with the triplets!). If you're running 12 miles a week, I would stick with that or find a more intense group fitness class - that's just my 2 cents! Kathy
  21. This week I finished Choosing to SEE by Mary Beth Chapman and The Book Thief. Now I'm caught up, but gotta get going this week or I'll fall behind again...
  22. I just finished Sarah's Key this morning - great book. I loved the history more than the present-day, but I know they were both important to the story... Now off to The Book Theif, though I'm nervous because I didn't realize it was a YA book...the last YA book that I read was the Twilight series, and I HATED that! Hope this redeems YA books for me :) Kathy 2011 Book List 1. The Help 2. Fahrenheit 451 3. Catch-22 4. Deconstructing Penguins 5. Wicked 6. Obsessed 7. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet 8. Sarah's Key
