  1. Hello again! I am new-ish and during my attempts to figure out how to use this forum, I have posted a "hello" before. Alas, I did not know how to "subscribe" to the thread and have no idea if anyone responded! Now that I have that all figured out, let me try again... I am a homeschooling mom of 3 kiddos going into my 5th year of homeschooling. We began in K with our son who will be entering 4th grade this year. My girls are going into 1st and 2nd grades. I have always used a classical (or at least pseudo-classical!) approach and look forward to exploring these forums and seeing what there is to help me on my journey! Heather
  2. We've used "L'il Critters Omega-3 Gummies," and my kiddos love them. They're pretty readily available at any store, although Costco has them at a better overall price. Here's a link with a picture so you know what you're looking for: http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Vitamins/Omega-3-Gummy-Fish-with-DHA/ID=prod3481009-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku3479852
  3. I have a son who has been doing not-so-well with rapid-fire math facts. I plan to implement speed drills this year, but wondered: Are there any particularly recommended books or websites for speed drills? Any fun games that I could play to improve their facts? Thanks!
  4. I'm there, but don't have much to add. The excercise, B vitamins, D vitamins, and a packet of Emergen-C a day help, but nothing really gets rid of it for me either, including sleep! Sorry I can't help much, but I can empathize. ;-)
  5. I shred it and freeze it raw for breads, muffins, pastas, etc. When thawing, I thaw it in cheesecloth-lined colander to drain the excess water. I don't know if this is the "right" way, but it's always worked for me!
  6. I jus did standardized testing with my oldest for the first time. I went over the results with him, beginning with his strengths and praise. I hit the weaker areas last, reminding him that the tests were meant only to show us which areas we need to work harder on and which areas we can kind of lighten our load on. That worked well for us, anyway!
  7. Hmmm... interesting. My third gets huge, hard, hot-to-the-touch welts after mosquito bites unless I'm quick with the benedryl. My neighbor's firstborn does the same thing. I assume it's an allergic response and can be lumped in with all the other allergies that are much worse than 30+ years ago. Why? That's my question....
  8. Here's what we do: The kids are responsible for all "their" areas (bedrooms, toys, their shared bathroom, putting away their own laundry, and sometimes kitchen help). Any other areas--vacuuming the main rooms, guest bathrooms, outdoor yard work (picking up sticks, etc.) can be done for money, but ONLY if they are doing the "take care of your own area" things. The money-making chores are optional for now. I will say, however, that this is sporadic in its efficacy. Mine are still young--the youngest is 5--so maybe it will work for older kids better. ;-) Hope that gives you some ideas!
  9. I used "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" with all 3, and then moved into A Beka Phonics program. I didn't do phonics with my son at first, but he struggled in spelling until I did in 2nd grade; then it 'clicked.' I did phonics right after the 100 lessons bookd with both girls, and it worked very well!
  10. We also just began reading Tom Sawyer. I don't know what the thing is with the collars being sewn on, but overall my kids have been enjoying it! It helps that they saw a play put on by a local group a few months ago, however. I'd say just read through it chapter by chapter and stop for discussion, questions, etc. in between. . .
  11. Hi, all! I'm new to this board and trying to figure it all out. We live in TN and homeschool our three munchkins: a son, 9 and daughters 7 and 5 (almost 6). I've homeschooled since the beginning and have stuck pretty much with a classical method. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions, but right now I'm just overwhelmed with information and just stopped by to say 'hello!' Heather
