  1. Thank you both for replying. I have joined the yahoo group, yea! and will try to read more there. Questions: 1. I was wondering how long it takes to learn the material to teach? I don't have much time before my dc graduate (10th and 11th) so I think I will probably be one lesson ahead of the group (was thinking of having 1-2 other families join my two dc). 2. Does the curriculum require certain books or can we use any books or subjects? 3. How close to IEW is this? Thanks, Ruth
  2. Has anyone used Lost Tools of Writing? Can anyone let me know how it is going? I have 2 high school aged and need help! I am not a good writer and don't know how to teach it. TIA
  3. This young man is going into high school next year. SIL went into the school and was told, "He is not college material but maybe we can get him to graduate." He has a special class he goes to and "help" with standardized test where an adult reads the test questions to him. I suggested SIL homeschool him. She and her husband both work and it wouldn't work. I said, "Take it one year at a time" but said aloud that the high school might not give him credit if he tried to go back. I offered to tutor him over the summer- any little bit helps. (Really, just wanted to keep him from playing video games all day long for the whole summer. And he is well behaved at our house.) Later, hubby says, "Who cares if high school doesn't give him credit for work done. Enroll him as a freshman after taking a year off to homeschool. It doesn't matter if he graduates at 19yo instead of 18." DH's only concern was sports, which at first I thought pretty silly but boy's do need an outlet for physical energy. So I might be homeschooling someone else child. Help! anyone have experience with this? I wouldn't mind starting tomorrow but need to prepare first. He reads at a 2nd gr. level, has a speech problem, and dyslexia. And he shuts down when he gets an answer wrong- can't deal with it. Off to do research (where to start???), pray a lot, and wait for in-law's to think about it. Thanks for staying with me through all my rambling, Ruth
  4. Is anyone going to the Homeschool World Series in FL? ------------------------------------- I am talking about the Homeschool Baseball World Series that will be held in Auburndale FL in April. Anybody else have a son that is crazy for baseball? Ruth
  5. I have USAA for both right now but Auto went up again. They said that all rates in TX went up 1-2%. I have been shopping around and might go with GEICO but would that cause my homeowners to go up? or is it the other way around? You get a credit on auto for having both with the same company? TIA Ruth
  6. I didn't know about handle on the arts. Ruth
  7. I have frizzy hair. On humid days, my hair can look like Diana Ross hair. A decade ago, when it was about to my bra, it was pretty wavy. I could do big curls, tight curls, it would hold any curl. But right now it is just Brillo pad dry and coarse. Full of split ends. And summer is a long season here in Texas. It is just going to get worse when the pool opens. I think maybe I will cut it, get some long layers around the face only- that way I can still pin it back, and just highlight around my face. I will also google the curly girl site. Thanks
  8. Thanks all, I would love to go to salon the first time but we are REALLY tight on money right now. I was thinking of donating to Locks of Love so I could get the trim for free and color at home. I have a white stripe that starts at my hairline like Cruella Devil. What do you think of long layers? I was doing research on hairstyles for round (75 lbs overweight) faces and "they" say if I want to keep my hair long to do layers starting below the chin. Oh I have to call and see if they will layer my hair for free or if only the trim is free but I'm procrastinating because I'm chicken. Still when your Dad pulls three white hairs out of your braid, Mom discreetly leaves color shampoo, and dd12 makes comment of how high up the braid those split ends are traveling...I think its time.
  9. cut my hair in about 10 years and it is down to my waist. I want to color it because I have too much gray. But which do I do first-cut or color? Are the color-at-home hair dyes good, especially for for curly, dry, coarse hair? Am I just going to make a fool out myself with such a drastic change?
  10. that way you can store supplies and books. Maybe put a timeline running across the wall? Globe on top of the bookcases? Or maybe dry eraser board instead of the timeline? What kind of storage do you need (other than books:tongue_smilie:)? What are the dimensions of the room and the table? Is the room easily seen from the front door? Would you mind if it looked too much like a school room? Maybe, make it look more a library? Sorry that I'm not much help. Just wishing we had room for a schoolroom. :001_smile:
