  1. I can sympathize as I am going through the same thing with my 2nd grader. We are working on RSB, still not convinced it's a good fit for my dd, but we keep plugging on. I've been throwing in some MM Light Blue, as the pp said, in order to gain a little bit of confidence since she HATES math. I'm giving my dd a couple more weeks, if there is no break through, I'm thinking of a 1 month hiatus in math. Hang in there!
  2. Great thread. I had just posted something similar on the curriculum board without much success. YES, YES, YES! This is why I will not drill my daughter. She knows 2+2 is 4 but doesn't understand how to get 4 unless she has a manipulative to work with. Does this mean she 'gets it', I'm not convinced. When you say your dd is 'language oriented', do you mean she is an auditory learner? My dd is extremely auditory so I'm wondering if the workbook you recommend would suit her? Didn't mean to hijack. :)
  3. Our FES skyped everyday with his family (frowned upon by the organization, but we allowed it.) We actually grew close to his family by 'seeing' and talking to them everyday, it was a neat experience. It took him about a week to get semi-comfortable. I heard that boys are much easier than girls though. Keep her busy and don't allow her to isolate herself by staying in her room for long periods. Sounds like you are doing a great job!
  4. My dd's Pediatric Optometrist recommends annually, as children's eyes change frequently. In the past 3 years, my dd's prescription has changed 3 times. I would definintely get a new exam.
  5. Yep, us too. Debating whether to drop Geography. We are using MFW, ECC and it's a bit much for my 2nd grader.
  6. :iagree: Definitely check out thrift shops. I always see them for really cheap.
  7. Yep, us too. I realized by week 3 it wasn't going to work for us. DD worked faster than anticipated in grammar, spelling, reading and ETC. Slower in math. I found myself stressing us both out by allowing the file system dictate our day (new homeschooling mom syndrome, I'm sure.)
  8. What kind of processing problem? It wouldn't surprise me if she had a visual processing problem. But I would think her reading would be affected by this and she's a great reader. So confusing. Wish I could figure out the problem and fix it. I hate this helpless feeling.
  9. Is your ds an auditory learner by chance? I'm wondering if this is part of the underlying issue with my dd. Also, are you recommending the Cloud Nine Teacher Manual or the entire kit? It looks interesting. I can't 'drill' her because she will memorize the problems instead of fully grasping the concept. She's done this with 2+2, 4+4 and 5+5. She 'knows' these but doesn't visualize them in her head and cannot tell me how she came up with the answer. If that makes any sense?
  10. I tried one lapbook with my dd and it was a total bust. But she's not crafty...doesn't enjoy cutting, pasting, drawing, writing, etc. and is not a visual learner so I wasn't holding my breath. She'd rather me read her 5 books on a topic of her choosing, narrate/discuss the books and be done. She's extremely auditory. Totally depends on the child, imo.
  11. Yes, everyday. She makes dots, flowers, hearts, etc. and can easily add this way.
  12. We are on lesson 27 in Rightstart B and dd STILL cannot do addition in her head....even simple addition (1+2, 1+3, 2+4,....) This is so frustrating. She is able to get the answer when using the abacus, tiles, dots and other manipulatives, just not in her head. Her spelling, grammar, memorizaton and reading abilities are great. Math is just not clicking. Do I switch programs or give it time?
  13. DD's main audio book currently is The Lion The Witch and The Wordrobe (listens to it in the car and 20 min. at bedtime.) Frog and Toad series will be in her workboxes this coming week. The Tale of Despereaux is next.
  14. DS was adopted at 12 months from Vietnam and is not circumcised. His doctor advised us to have him circumcised when he is 4. Not happening - OUCH! If I had a biological son, he would, more than likely, be circumcised (dh choice.) Odd, but dh was born in VN and IS circumcized.
  15. We love love love HWOT but the double lined paper is our dilemma. My daughter has always used the typical 2 lines with the ------- in the middle and HWOT paper is confusing to her. Do I switch to something else already (we are finishing up our 4th week using HWOT)? I wouldn't consider switching if it wasn't for this paper, ugh! I've never considered anything but HWOT so I have no clue what else is out there (suggestions, please.) My dd's handwriting is that of a Kindergartener and extremely labored. We write 1-3 sentences of copy work a day and 1 pg of the HWOT workbook. Edited to add: DD is in '2nd grade.'
  16. What a relief! I am so happy to know I am not alone in the 'getterdone' department. My dd would rather get school over with so she can go to the park, ride her bike, nature walk, swim, watch a movie, etc. I do not have a creative bone in my body, so I prefer it this way.
  17. My dd is in 2nd grade and this is our first year hs'n. I know I am not suppose to try to catch her up to 'grade level', but I can't help but be concerned with how far 'behind' she is in math. I am having to go back to the basics...basic addition (2+1). She was playing a math game today on the computer (her idea) and the problem was 4+3 with the little animals at the top to count...she was one off and became so upset, "THIS IS TOO HARD, I DON'T GET IT" and pushed her chair away from the desk and said "I'm DONE!" We worked through the next few together and she did great. This is what I've been doing, but is it too much? Right Start B (we are on lesson 17) for our main curriculum and then in the evening for homework, I am having her complete one MM worksheet on addition. Is this okay? I'd love opinions.
  18. I'm new and curious. Do you schedule by lesson or time the lesson and when the timer goes off you're done regardless if the lesson was finished? I was scheduling by lesson, but I'm thinking this isn't a good thing. Some lessons, particularly AAS and RS, could go on for 30-45 min. I'm thinking... AAS - 20 min. RS-B - 25 min. Thoughts? Does this question need to be in the 'general' forum?
  19. We wavered all the time during the wait with our adoptions. NOt so much with the idea of 'do this instead', but we would figure out things to do to help with the wait. We had an exchange student, fostered dogs, took a long vacation, etc. A dog is less of a commitment (obviously, lol), so I'd say go for it.
  20. I know it's probably right in front of me but I cannot find the audios I see people commenting on watching. Are they on youtube or do I have to purchase them froms some place? Help. :)
  21. I'm looking at Earth Science and Astronomy. If you are using one of these, what are the pros and cons? If you've used both, which do you prefer and why? I'm open to other suggestions as well.
  22. I've done this exact thing for my dd ever since she began reading and always wondered if I was going to hinder her reading or cause something catastrophic to occur (I'm a worrier like that, lol.) As of last week I'm no longer using my finger and she's reading great for the most part. I do catch her skipping a word here and there, not sure if this is normal or if I caused it by doing the finger pointing....hmmm. I guess that didn't help you at all. :tongue_smilie:
  23. We are on our 3rd week and averaging 2.5 - 3 hours a day for my 2nd grader. This does not include all the reading we do throughout the day (average of 2 hrs.) I don't count reading since it's something we did when she was in ps daily.
  24. I've been using RS B for the past 3 weeks but felt we needed something more. She struggles with simple addition (2+3 unless she has the abacus - she's 7.8 and it's not clicking, ugh!!!! We haven't touched subtraction and I don't want to until she has a good grasp on addition. I purchased the MM Addition 1 worktext and have her do 1 worksheet as homework every night. Is this too much? She hasn't complained, but I don't want to overdo it. Thoughts are suggestions are welcomed.
  25. We are on lesson 27 in RS B and we skipped over all the tapping and she's doing great with math.
