  1. Yep, big time! I love the looks of CLE LA and have almost bought it 2-3 times but then I chicken out. I keep going back to FLL, WWE and AAS because it feels safe (it's all I know.) If that makes any sense. :) Some how I feel dd is missing out on worksheets, independent work, etc. But I think the one on one, verbal learning is best for dd. I also go back and forth over a reading program that is structured rather than reading the recommendations from Ambleside's booklist. Again, I feel she's missing out on something. Don't get me started with math or writing. :ack2: Sigh. Decisions, decisions...
  2. Us too! DD can't stand the tiles and when we do use them, it takes FOREVER. :iagree: :thumbup1:
  3. DD's school goes from 8:30-3:45, 2x's a week. $2,400 a year. I have no clue if this is low or high since there is nothing like it in our area to compare it with. According to them, it is low? They cover everthing except a formal math prorgram. Writing Penmanship Grammar Memory Work History Latin Art Phonics Science 1x a week Music 1x a week PE Chapel I would have to say their main focus is History, Latin and Art with the rest being icing on the cake. And they have a huge theater production where the kids put on a play for 3 nights with an audience of over 200 per night. They also offer activities after school (we never participate) and summer science camps (dd will attend.) No assignments/homework is ever sent home. I would not be happy with homework for dd, we have our own stuff to do. It's been a great fit for us but it's definitely not for everyone. There have been several families throughout the years who have attended for a year or two and decided to homeschool full-time. This is a success to the school. The school feels they have failed when a child is returned to PS. They offer onsite classes throughout the year to parent's who feel they need help, hand holding, reassurance, etc. Sometimes it feels like a dose of a SWB lecture every time I attend one of these classes....I can breath and take a sigh of relief. Take away, what do you mean? If it turns more families into homeschooling families, then yes. I could only hope. :D But I'm a bit biased. I can see how this would ruffle a few feathers from the existing school. Tough one!
  4. Can you be more specific regarding concerns and how we, as parent's, can be of help to you? I'd love to be of of help but not sure what your looking for specifically. BTW, I love your blog. You have a beautiful family. :)
  5. Yes, dd attends a hybrid school 2 times a week and I homeschool the other 3 days. I've received so much support from them. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have pulled dd from PS. For dd and I, it has been a great fit for our first year hs'ing. I needed the extra hand holding and reassurance that I can do this. If you would have asked me 1 year ago if I'd homeschool, I would have said you were crazy! I love the school and feel blessed to have one near us (30 min. drive) I watch dd soak in all the information from her teacher and she actually listens, not so much with me :glare:. I enjoy the 2 day break because I don't always have the patience (not a popular statement, I know! -- just being real.) We do use *most* of the same curriculum which is helpful. DD's school follows TWTM (FLL, WWE, SOTW....) LOVE that!!! :D With all that said, I haven't decided on next year. The drive, inability to be flexible (although, dd is in so many activities, there's not much room for flexibility,) inconsistencies with math, and the desire to have her home more is really weighing on me. I'm praying and know either way dd is getting a good education. ETA: DD's class is small in size with only 10 kids and a max. of 12. She needs one on one, which she receives. A class size any larger and it would not work.
  6. Here are a couple. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246359&highlight=3rd http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232805&highlight=3rd Everytime I think I have 3rd grade planned, I question myself. :glare:
  7. This is my first year and I feel pretty good about all the choices I've made (basically stuck with SWB philosophy). I've only ditched our math for something else, but I am obsessed with learning about the other curriculum options, CLE being one of them. :)
  8. Bill, What program teaches math this way? We are doing MM but only in 1A/1B and I haven't seen this.
  9. Stop! :grouphug: Of course it's not too late!! Take a deep breath. You're a concerned mom and that is going to take your kids far. :) I'm not a veteran HS'er, so I'll leave this for them to offer advice.
  10. Can you explain? I think I know what you mean but want to make sure. Math is not my thing.
  11. Faithe, thank you! Another question, I hope you don't mind. :) Is there more of a discription of their LA on their site (I'm sure it's just me!)? I opened each sample for Grade 3 and am not seeing that it covers narration, dictation, copywork, etc. in order to cover WWE. I was also planning on purchasing IEW -- SWI, level A, is this not necessary if we do CLE LA300? We are really enjoying AAS but it be overkill to do both? I've always been aprehensive of worksheets and this appears to be nothing but worksheet material. I'm wondering if I should just stick to our plan with my auditory learner/reluctant writer (she groans at handwriting.) Lots to think about. UGH!!!! Thank you for your help! Geesh, I just looked at their math and like what I'm seeing. Maybe as a MM supplement. :confused1: My head is spinning out of control. :D
  12. Would the LA for grade 3 replace WWE, FLL, ETC, and AAS? Does it teach cursive? Tonight is the first night I've ever looked at this curriculum and now my wheels are spinning for my soon to be 3rd grader.
  13. DD would be at 'grade level' in everything but math only because we're playing catch up where PS failed my dd last year. If I had continued on the path with our PS, she'd be 1 year behind in everything, I'm sure. Next year, I'm optimistic we will be ahead as she's flourishing at home and in private school. :) The principal is our neighbor, fun, fun, let me tell ya!
  14. We're doing Atelier Art for next year. I've read good reviews but then agin I've also read good reviews on Artistic Pursuits. I guess we never know until our child tries it.
  15. This is what I needed to hear! I'm sticking to MM!!!
  16. I'm new too. I keep going back and forth too. I bet I've looked at PR 30 times online. I love WWE, FLL, AAS, ETC...but love that PR is all in one (and so many rave reviews lately.) Maybe this is another instance of thinking the grass is greener, I duno. I'm sticking to what's been working, plus the cost of PR is a bit much, imho. I find myself questioning math as well with all these new threads on Singapore. Ahhhhhh! I will not cave, I will not cave, I will not cave!!!!
  17. There is one in Colorado too (20min. E. of me.) :001_smile: Not sure if it was an old mining town, wouldn't suprise me.
  18. Thanks, this is reassuring! I can't see my dd working independently for a while.
  19. Boy, can I relate! We'd have melt down after melt down until I started having her find the errors. First I'd have her re-read and sound out each word clearly, 9 times out of 10 she'd find the mistake herself. If not, I'd gently remind her of the spelling rule and have her write it correctly. So far this has worked. I'd also give her the number of correctly spelled words and praise her for those and not emphasize so much on the misspellings. I also have her write on the white board her spelling words, for her this is more fun.
  20. Thanks! I was worried as this is our plan too. :bigear:
  21. :iagree: There is a newbie homeschooler, in particular, on this board who posts often and I very much value her opinion just as much as someone who's been homeschooling for 15 years. How unfortunate it would be if that person, or anyone for that matter, would leave a forum or hesitate to help/educate/support/encourage us 'newbies' due to a thread such as this. :(
  22. Yes. We went with the basic kit and just purchased an index card box from Walmart and had dd choose a pkg of stickers for the progress chart. Save your money, it's not necessary. :)
  23. Sorry, just being real. I read on your other thread that males can be stinky and that's what we had, so maybe stick to females? Not sure. All I know is it was a lot of work keeping the area clean and not stinkn'. Get a dog.
