  1. I would....

invest a portion of it right away.

pay off our home and buy one for my father who is basically homeless.

pay off all student loan debt (our only debt really)

    get dh permanent dentures.

save enough for all the kids college funds.

get a makeover at some fancy spa.

donate a large portion to a charity that helps abused women get the skills they need to support themselves and their children.

donate to my local charity that helps people in our community

build and donate a new library to the town

stock the library with at least one book that is found on a classical list! buy a TON of great books for the library.

In the end I would plan on giving nearly all of it away to people who need it more, the community, and other worthwhile charities. There is no way I would ever need that much money and really I wouldn't want it.

  2. Thank you all for the posts. They have been very helpful. I do have a question though....a few of you mentioned your dc are great readers and reading years ahead of their age. Do you think the program can work well for a child who can read okay but doesn't get a kick out of it?

Dd is 7 (a very young 7) and we would be starting AO Yr2. She likes to read a little here and there but for the most part she would rather listen to books or do another subject. She does not like to read by herself or out loud. Would AO be a poor fit because of this? Or do you think it would encourage her to like reading (based on how interesting the books are)?

  3. I was so excited to start TOG this year but due to a few different situations I had to sell it. :glare: We will resume TOG next year.....so now I am looking at other options. As it sits right now, I plan on using SOTW with AG and books from the library. However I am always drawn to AO.

Does anyone use this? DO you use it as is or tweak it? Have you enjoyed it more than SOTW or TOG for that matter? Have your kids liked the reading lists? Do you find it overwheleming or lacking?

Really any opinion you want to give would be great.

  4. I make a really good ginger pork roast---

    Pork roast

fresh ginger shredded (so the fibers are out-or use jar type)

    butter (not margarine)

    apple brown sugar

mix and marinate 3 hours (take out of fridge last 1/2 hr)

cook in med oven til 165 (about 45 min)

Serve with swedish red cabbage and au gratin pots and a green

For our church Christmas party the leader had a "my favorite things" theme She gave away her favorite things to have---her favorite book, her favorite movie etc.....

    Lara

Have you used another side dish instead of the swedish red cabbage? We have 3 nursing moms in the group so cabbage is a big no-no! ;)

  5. I get together with 11 other ladies once a month. We rotate houses and whoever is the host serves everyone dinner and is in charge of buying the gift/prizes for Bunco (a game). We have a blast and the gifts are always pretty cool.

May is my month to host and I am drawing a blank on what to make and what to buy. I need some suggestions for both dinner and gifts. Dinner has to serve 12 and I really want to make something fantastic this time. In the past I have just done a potato bar, pizza, and soup (I usually host in the fall) usually with salad, bread of some sort and a dessert. Any yummy ideas??

The gifts have to be worth $35, $15, $10 and $5. In the past we have done prizes such as cookbooks, massages and manicures, movie bundles, gift certificates, etc. I would like to do something different, I just dont know what.

    Any suggestions???

  6.

Spelling Power's lists will be lists like "short a sound," "long a sound," etc. The words will all have a "long a sound" with many different spellings (ai, eigh, a consonant e, etc) but no idea as to why different spellings are used or when. My children (especially my spelling challenged son) found this to be very frustrating!

AAS also goes into all the "why's" behind the ways words are spelled. The last couple of lessons have been on the sound of k; when c makes the k sound (and why) and when you use ck to make the k sound (and why). There are always some words that don't follow the rules but knowing the reasons behind the rules has made a world of difference!

This is exactly what we need! We use spelling workout right now and the lists sound similar to spelling power. Dd find it SO confusing and frustrating! She is the "why?" child, she always needs to know why so she can move on to the next thing. If she doesn't know why, Oh Boy, she wont drop it for days until she is satsified.

Thanks everyone for the responses. It sounds like AAS is going to be the way we go.....now if I can just find it cheap! ;)

  7. We did this same thing years ago. We went from boxed newly wed cooking to vegetarian. We did it cold turkey and it was tough! We ate a lot of cheese enchiladas in the begining because I hadn't gotten the hang of it.

So my advice is scale back to 3 new dinners each week (or do 5 new side dishes) until your family starts to get a taste for everything. To make the transition easier for your dh I would stick to things that are easily paired with his meat and potatoes. If you really want to try something crazy, have a back up plan just in case.

And one last thing....if they all have bad attitudes about it, don't take it personally. I spent many nights trying not to cry after dinner. Eventually we got our menu down and everyone was begging me to cook!

Good luck. Culinary adventures are one of my favorites!

  8. I posted a little while back about DD and her spelling program. After looking at all the recommendations I have narrowed it down to Spelling Power and AAS. They seem like two very different types of programs each having their own pros and cons. I would like something that will show results fairly quick so as to keep dd motivated.

My dd is getting to the point that she likes to write but has the hardest time with spelling. She can read "cat" but is stumped when it comes to spelling because she doesnt know to use "c" or "k". She likes rules and can memorize with the best of them.

So for those who have used both which would you suggest to use for a (young) 2nd grade dd who is very ADHD, emotional, and does not hear the connections in words?

  9. My middle dd is the same way. She did well in her spelling workbook, but I was shocked at how poorly she spelled even little notes she wrote to her sister or when she posted a sign on the bathroom door "toylet klogged." :001_huh:

    I highly recommend it.

LOL my dd would have spelled that the same way! We had kareutt cake the other night. :001_huh:

I will look into spelling power, it sounds like something that may work.

  10. I always wore mine day or night. I still wear it most of the time, although now its because I fall asleep at the drop of a hat and forget to even change! LOL Gotta love motherhood.

My reason for it when I was a teen was because I had poor circulation and I was cold ALL. THE. TIME. This led to some um embarassing situations. :D I was a very self concious kid so it was kind of a protection thing.

  11. We have been using spelling workout and I thought it was working fine. However if my dd is writing in any other context outside of SWO she can't spell anything! She does fine with small words and, the, cat, hat etc but as soon as there is word that is trickier, it goes right out the window.

She has difficulty with school because of severe ADHD as it is so I am not sure if this is just a phase, laziness, or something else. She is not a natural speller. She can not hear a word and hear how it is spelled and she has trouble making the connection between a reading rule and a spelling rule.

What program would you recommend for a reluctant speller?

  12. It has crossed my mind but like someone else said I don't use my kids full names or even where we live. I just say "we went to town" however I do mention Idaho so it probably could be figured out. I have a site tracker on my personal blog, that way I can see who is coming and going. There have been a few odds ones that have come up but I have found that I know nearly everyone who visits. I still stay relatively annoymous I guess.

  13. My husband just called to tell me. A man was seen walking with a gun on the church grounds so a couple of the youth called the cops. Everyone was locked down inside the gym for about 45 minutes. Now they can be in the halls but no one is allowed to leave the building yet. They haven't found the guy. They haven't shared much with everyone so that's all we know.

It totally freaks me out! He said he would call when they are allowed to leave.

  14. Who here really plans their year?

Do you plan the whole year or in chunks? I plan in quarters. I have a general idea of what I want to accomplish all year but I break it down. That way I have time to see what is working and what is not. I don't waste time planning something isn't going to work.

Do you make all the copies of stuff you'll need at one time? I make all my copies on Sunday night so its all fresh in my mind for the week.

Do you buy any supplies you'll need before your year? I *try* to gather all my materials for the coming week on Saturday when I go to town. I do want to change for this year though. I will spend the summer gathering all the odds and ends that we will need, especially for science.

How do you decide what you will cover? I follow the suggestions in WTM, personal wants and the basic curriculum I am using. For example with math I just follow along with their outline. If I need to supplement I just note it on my planner until I feel like we have covered the material enough. With reading I pick and choose from sites like Ambleside and Sonlight. I also talk with the Librarian in town and choose some popular books.

Do you do a goal type thing? Nope

Do you use a planner, paper, online? Yes I do. I am a list maker and having a planner makes me feel more organized and in control of our school time. (The link is in my signature to see what it looks like) For me having an outline (even if I don't follow it to the T) gives me a chance to see the areas we need more work, less work, etc. I like having it all out in front of me with the notes I have kept for the week. I can better track progress this way as well as what is working and what isn't.

Basically I am looking for ideas and any would be welcome I am so tired of the unorganized what will we do this week situation I am dealing with.

Yes I kinda have an idea on what I want to do but opinions from those who do this type of thing would be very helpful. Thanks

I hope that helps. Figuring it all out is frustrating at times but once you do it feels so much better! Good Luck.

  15. We loved using the CD's with SOTW 1. We had the original version with the woman narrator. We were so pleased we bought SOTW 2 CD's. However we all wanted to cut our ears off after listening to Jim Weiss! I sold them after about 2 weeks.

My kids disliked the second set so much they wouldn't listen to them at all. The first set was so wonderful and made such an impression on them, they still talk about all the great stories. We would listen to them anytime we were in the van and most nights we would put them on after family reading time. In fact they would often ask to listen to one of the CD's instead of watching a movie.

So if you like Jim Weiss voice go for it, if you don't.....don't waste the money. :)
