  1. He does wear glasses because his eyes hurt when he reads. His hand writing and spelling are atrocious and I fight with him on that as well.

We've tried the graph paper and that didn't help either. He doesn't like the MUS blocks because they are too much of a distraction. However if I word his problems as a word problem he can orally do it. He can't translate the oral to written though.

  2. Okay, so really it's just my 9yo da and his math. The kid drives me nuts!! He can do mental math with relative ease, figures out geometry while he's building stuff, can calculate money at the cash register, but this kid claims he can't do a math worksheet. We are using MUS because I thought the hands on approach would work best. Instead of flying through (he's still on Beta) his pages are covered in doodles, basic addition and subtraction is wrong, and it takes him forever (seriously 1 page can take an hour). He claims he can't add 3421+5643 because there are too many numbers but if I ask him out loud he can figure it out.

He hates math, spends all his time whining about math, and generally being a pain during school time.

What can I do? Does this sounds like some sort of learning disability? Is this normal boy behavior? I'm seriously ready to send him to public school because I'm so worn out fighting with him.

  3. I'm putting together a Christmas wish list of sorts for my dh to check out (I am horrible to shop for).  Each year we have a 3 gift guideline, 1 gift to wear, 1 to read, and 1 to do.  I have a few books on the list but I would like to add a couple of magazines as well.

Do you subscribe to any (print) mags that you really enjoy?  I'd love to see what is out there.  Google seems to think I need fashion help (which is true) and only recommends fashion mags.

    TIA!

  4. We are changing up our cell phone plans in the next week or so.  We want to get an iPhone but do not want the user to access any internet services.  Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the internet access on an iPhone?  If so, how easy is it to turn it back on?  Can it be password protected?

  5. I've been looking for months but have come up with nothing.  I've stalked VarageSale and Homeschool classifieds.  I've googled, looked on ebay, etc.  Nothing.

Where have you had luck finding used materials?  We will be using 6, 4, and 1(maybe).

This will be our first year using it so I really REALLY don't want to pay full price just to try it out kwim?  T

  6. Well, I don't know what it is like where you are, but I find they don't put out winter type clothing in the stores just yet here.  So you might have better luck waiting a little bit.

It's usually out by the end of August around here.  However, I'm just curious before I actually start shopping.  I'll check out all the used online shops, ebay, and locally before I ever step foot in a retail store.

  7. I will be doing out yearly school shopping this coming weekend.  My 4 and 6 year olds have requested skirts instead of jeans this year.  I normally buy 7 pairs of jeans for everyone but the two little girls spend most of their day switching to skirts.  So I've decided to humor them and cut my laundry in one hit.  We live in an area that gets lots of snow and wind during the fall/winter.  The temps here can easily get -20.  I've already purchased warm winter tights and will add boots in the near future.  As for skirts though, I'm lost.  I'm finding lots of flimsy, lightweight skirts that are practically see through or skirts so short they don't cover much.  Those won't cut it during the cold.

Where have you found the best deals on warm skirts?  Keep in mind I am a thrift store shopper usually, so a $50 skirt (no matter how warm) will never happen. I don't mind buying used but it needs to be worth it. :)

What brands or fabrics do you like the most?

  8. My dd10 wants to learn how to train a horse.  She started with a trainer a couple of years ago but the trainer was undependable and we eventually stopped.  Now that she is older she would like to start working more independently, at least for part of the time.  We will find someone fully trained to help her of course.

Which method of natural horsemanship would you recommend starting with?

  9. 119.  Just because your hormones are going a little crazy does not mean you are smarter than me.  It only means that your brain no longer processes how awesome I am.  One day you will have a child exactly like you and you will call begging for advice.  I only hope my hormones are stable at that time.  If they aren't, be prepared for me to roll my eyes, sigh loudly, slam the door, and say "Why do you have to be so mean!".

  10. We have the same problem at our house.  Our family budget is only $600 for a family of 6 (one teen).  If we had it, we would spend at least $1000 a month.  Since there is no where in the budget to double our spending on groceries, we have to eat a lot of grains.  My husband has digestive issues so we should be eating gluten free but it's just not an option at this point.  I'm lactose intolerant so we buy minimal dairy products as well.

Grocery shopping is a nightmare anymore.  Groceries have gone up so much in the last couple of years.  I've noticed price raises of up to a $1.00 on some items just between shopping trips (and I shop at a discount warehouse style store).

The only advice I can give is either raise your budget or start a garden.  Not a lot of help, sorry. :)

  11. Details:  The family used to live in an RV (a couple of them actually), the woman has dread locks, they homeschool, they live in Colorado (at least they did last time I read), they used to live in Missoula, MT where they won something from Apartment Therapy, they home church, and she hula hoops.

:)  I've tried everything I can think of and I can't seem to find it.

Please tell me someone knows which one I am thinking of.

ETA- yes, I've searched Apt therapy but I am wading through 32,000 results.

  12. Two words...

    Comic Sans

    I can't bear it.

I'll admit that my snobbish font behavior started with Comic Sans.  I was 15 and my best friend typed a 2 page letter to me all in Comic Sans.  I remember reading that letter thinking "I really really hate this font."  It was a pivotal moment for me because it made me start noticing font everywhere.  Comic Sans in my book = "Do not take me seriously, I'm like a 15yo."

Oh, y'all are going to have to read Just My Type: A Book About Fonts if you haven't already!  (I got it at my library.)

Thanks for posting!  I added it to my cart. :)

I remember reading some design advice that called Comic Sans (and a number of others, including Papyrus, Gigi, Zapfino, and Vivaldi)  "the Mom Jeans of fonts."

I believe it!  Anytime I've seen those fonts used in recent years, it's always been on something designed by a Mom Jeans kind of lady.  (Nothing wrong with that BTW, just my experience in my little corner of the world).  It's like the fonts are a certain right of passage or something.

I do digital scrapbooking, so I am choosy about the fonts I use for it.  I didn't realize how much so until my kids started pointing out tacky looking billboards, bus benches, etc because they thought they could have used a better choice of font. :)

My kids too.  We were in a western store the other day when my daughter grabbed a tag on a bra.  "Mom, why in the world would they use this ugly manly font to advertise a bra!?"  It makes me happy in a weird way.

  13. I am often turned off by fonts.  I get used to a certain look of things and when it's radically different it makes me twitchy.

Me too.  In fact we had a restaurant in our old town that I couldn't eat at because their business font was so jarring.

  14. I've known this for quite sometime but it became very apparent today when I found myself instantly discrediting any HS planner that had a bad font.  I don't even know if they would have been my dream planner, it doesn't matter with bad font present.

I am aware of how snobby and odd I sound right now. :)

    Anyone else nit-pick fonts?

  15. If you want to know any more specifics, I'll be glad to look things up for you. I decided to get the dvd course instead of online because we have a couple of family members who don't have internet. I can take it with me this way. It came with all the student and parent extra pages and schedules printed out for me, so it would be very easy.

That's the option I am leaning to as well.  I talked with dd and she specifically said she doesn't like internet learning because she feels like it jumbles her brain. :)  I am the same way so I know what she means.  I've been going through the samples and so far I am impressed.  It seems like a very in depth program.  I will let you know if I have more questions.  It's always hard to get a feel for a program online.
