RIGHT??? THIS IS WHAT QUARANTINE HAS DONE TO ME!!! I had to stop wearing them around the house because there was a real possibility I was going to stab someone in the head with a heel.

One of the ladies in my neighborhood FB group posted a story about a photographer who did what they called PORCHtraits, which are pics of people on their porches (from a distance), representing what their lives are like during quarantine. I commented that it would be so much fun, and she volunteered to do them for free for our entire neighborhood! We did ours last Monday. They were so much fun. We were much goofier than some of our other neighbors, but that’s just us. BTW, the giant teenager is the little boy I used to homeschool! He’s gotten so big! He’s 6’3”

I commented that it would be so much fun, and she volunteered to do them for free for our entire neighborhood! We did ours last Monday. They were so much fun. Hello, all! Some of you MAY remember me from when I homeschooled my older son, who is now a SENIOR in high school! Our “surprise” turned 9 this past Saturday, and has been thriving in a b&w school. Thanks to COVID-19, we’re homeschooling. I forgot how much work this is!

MBTP is pretty hands on and there are lots of options for projects. It's probably too much to do everything, but it's lots of applied learning. A lot of the stuff feels like husyworkto my kids who would rather be efficient and do the minimum, though. Does he not like busywork? Then maybe do quick & simple curriculum and let him play more.

So, my younger son will be ready for 1st grade this coming fall. It's been a few years since I've done this, and AGES since I did 1st grade. Help!
Han Solo (not his real name!) loves learning, and is very inquisitive. Books are his thing, and he's working so hard to learn to read. Yay! He doesn't show any signs of dyslexia, thank goodness, which I'm hoping will make it a bit easier than it was with Indy (also not his real name). He's a hands on learner, and loves to do activities, but HATES coloring, cutting, and pasting. Weird, right? He's big into math, and has been doing simple addition and subtraction in his head for quite a while. Any thoughts on curriculum for a busy kid?
We are secular homeschoolers, BTW.

Hello, everyone! It's been ages since I've been here. I had to lose one of my internet hangouts, and since we stopped homeschooling in 2015, this is the one I had to let go. :sad: I missed you all, though! As we'll be starting 1st grade with our younger son next year, I thought I should come back! It's not like I spend most of my days online anyway.
Things have changed a bit since I was here. We're still at Ft. Lewis in WA, but James Bond (hubs) is currently in Korea for a year. When he gets home in July, we're moving to Ft. Belvoir, in the DC metro area. Indy is now 14, and 6 feet tall. He's a freshman at a brick and mortar high school! Han Solo is 5, and currently in Kindergarten at a brick and mortar school. We'll start homeschooling with him after we move. I work from home as a copy writer, and enjoy it a lot. I even get paid for it! Shocking. I should be able to keep doing when we start hsing.
So, that's about it. I probably won't be around a lot, but I'll be popping back on every now and then.

Does anyone know if there are any MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) sample tests online? I have looked, but can't find anything! We're considering sending Indy to school for 8th grade (a magnet type of school), and he needs to take the MAP. He won't have to do it until late summer, but he's already a nervous wreck. I think he'd feel more confident if he knew what to expect. TIA!

I am the same way. Depression/anxiety/bi-polar SUCK. I have an an exercise machine, that I could easily use, but I just stare at it with loathing. I know I need to, but... Believe me, I feel your pain, and I hate it too. The docs are working on my meds, so I'm a big mess. I've been having a hard time even getting out of bed in the mornings. James Bond is gone (AGAIN) though, so I *have* to make myself get up, and it is a struggle. Every day, I tell myself that I'm going to get up early, and exercise before the boys get up, but it has yet to happen. I used to get on it and watch shows on Netflix or stuff we've DVR'd, but now, I just sit on the sofa. :(
I do have to start physical therapy tomorrow for the knee I dislocated on NYE (the morning, not because I was out partying), and they will have me on a bike, and doing strengthening exercises that will help my whole leg. I have issues with both knees, so they're going to work both legs the same, and I'm hoping that will motivate me a little more. Sigh.

Nope. Sometimes, if I'm waiting for something to finish cooking, like a casserole or whatever, we might have salad, or more likely a veggie tray, and then whatever was cooking, but beyond that, no. I would be up and down too much to enjoy it. Usually if we have soup or salad, we have it with the meal, or it IS the meal. My boys ask for salad AS the meal at least once or twice a week. Han Solo went 3 days a week or so ago, where other than breakfast, he wouldn't eat anything but salad for lunch or dinner.
We eat at the table every night, and do use cloth napkins for every meal, but no table cloths. If something fell on it, Han Solo would completely freak out. If something drops on the table, it MUST be wiped up immediately, or he can't eat. Sheesh. Indy sets the silverware and napkins on the table, and gets the drinks (water for all), and I plate the meals in the kitchen, then James Bond or Indy carry them to the table, while I finish plating. I plate Han Solo's first, and James Bond cools it, then sets it on the table, for HS to start. He's a SLOW eater (being 3, and all), so we let him start eating ASAP, otherwise we'll all be at the table forever. Unless there is something going on that Indy has to get to (Scouts, fencing), we stay at the table until every one is finished. When Han Solo is done, Indy takes him upstairs and gives him a bath, while James Bond and I sit and enjoy the few moments of quiet, and chat before we clear the table and clean the kitchen.

Well, apparently James Bond thought my text was totally insane, because I just got a delivery of flowers with a message that read: I can't wait to grow old and senile with you. Awww! The funny thing is that about 10 minutes later, a SECOND, larger bouquet was delivered. I called the florist, and they said they messed up, and put the wrong card on the wrong bouquet, so they sent the correct one out (with a duplicate card), and to keep both. My house smells really good!
Still, what can we talk about??????

Rosie, I loved what I saw of the Philosopher's Mail, and would LOVE to discuss stuff like this with James Bond, BUT the articles are SO long, there's no way he'd read the entire thing! He's dyslexic, so reading isn't his thing, plus he says he has to read briefs and reports all day at work, so he doesn't want to read anything else, because his brain hurts from sorting stuff out during the day. I can't believe I married a man who doesn't read!

You know I worry about this after James Bond retires. I've recently had 4 of my friends tell me they are getting divorced at 20+ years of marriage, because they were bored and had nothing to talk about. These are all military marriages, and have spent a huge amount of their marriages apart. My parents divorced after 26 years, because my dad was in the Navy, and gone so much. When they had to live together, they realized they had little in common, and nothing to talk about. James Bond and I will be married 20 years next month, and he will likely be retiring in about 3-4 years (unless he gets promoted again), and when we live together full time, how will we deal with it? I had a real break down about it the other day. OF COURSE he's gone right now, so I sent him the craziest text and I'm sure he thought I had lost my mind.
ETA: I'm not talking about just weighty stuff, but just talking throughout the day, without being bored with each other.

I love this show so much it hurts. James Spader is the epitome of suave as Red. I like how he was so casual about being chained to the wall in the new ep after the Super Bowl.
James Bond has a real issue with how incompetent they make the FBI look. He also goes crazy over some of the little things they do, like bringing personal cell phones into the office. If it were just a bureau office, he said it was fine, but not in a "super secret" bunker (that's not really all that secret!) they seem to work in. His building has this electronics detector in it that goes off every time an electronic device is brought into the building. He accidentally left his cell phone in one of the leg pockets of his uniform, and he said it started blaring. He got ribbed all day for it. He said he can't imagine they'd just allow personal phones in the "bunker" (that's what we call it).
I read this online today, and it cracked me up: "If we made Red President, NOBODY would screw with us."
