  1. Since they know you have the K-cups, you'll have to serve them that, but I would definitely just have a reasonable amount in the K-cup holder or basket and not have extras. You may even have to say, "Oh, we'd better save some for tomorrow." so they don't think it is an endless refill. If they ask, you can say you're just not keeping as many on hand anymore.
  2. I would imagine the insides could still be frosty and that would have kept the water pretty cold. I would roast it and not worry about it, and I am typically known for my conservative food practices. Let us know what you did!
  3. I couldn't disagree more. I have used Saxon and found the lack of mastery frustrating and I was constantly reteaching concepts. Chalkdust has plenty of practice problems, and the DVDs are wonderful. We can rewind and review what he didn't understand, the text has plenty of explanation and examples, and it is rigorous enough that I am not worried about him not scoring well on ACT/SAT tests in the future. Aside from the cost, there are very few "cons." As far as the lesson plans, it doesn't take much to figure them out if you buy from another source other than directly from CD. The CDs come with lesson numbers and times. It just takes a few minutes to sit down and break up those lesson times. I always do a couple of the odds with my kids and then have them do odds or multiples of 3s depending on the number of problems. It isn't a bid deal to not have that spelled out for me.
  4. Yes! I had to call a "everyone-was-up-for-some-reason-last-night-and-we-are-all-sleep-deprived" day a while back because my kids each woke up at 2 hour intervals. One with an ear ache, then one had a wet bed, then one had a bloody nose. I was exhausted and the kids were all "off" so we scrapped school and just read books, played some games, etc. and took the day off. Otherwise I would not have been a good teacher or mom.
  5. I am about to order a Kindle Touch. It will be primarily used by my 13yo for his high school literature class, and probably by others of us for leisure reading. My son is very careful with things so I am not worried about him abusing it, but wondered how durable they are? Is it worth the $30 warranty for two years on a $99 Kindle?
  6. No, unless they are sick and staying in bed. I have people drop by or some of us will have to go somewhere for something like piano lessons. We just have a routine and it works. Get up, make beds, eat breakfast, get dressed, start school. Then we are ready for whatever comes our way.
  7. My son is training for a few 5K's for his PE credit. He will run one in February for this year. We will work toward faster times each race his Sophomore year as he will be running one in September, October, February 2013 and a 15K in May 2013. Then we will train for a triathlon his junior year, and a half-marathon for his senior year PE credit. He will be reading some training books to help with these events as well. My dd is only in middle school now, but she will do the same thing. I like registering them for actual events as goals and recorded times. It pushes them toward meeting goals and personal bests. Keeps us accountable to be doing what they are getting credit for. Around here, student athletes don't have to take PE as well - their athletics count as their PE credit, so that is what I am modeling my plan after. I will make a quilt out of their racing tshirts when they graduate.
  8. I have been running since the summer and my legs have definitely NOT bulked up, but have gotten slimmer as I've lost the weight. My hiney is about gone, and my thighs are smaller than they have ever been. My calves are much more defined but I wouldn't say bulky. I always thought I was bulkier, but I really just had layers of fat over the muscle. Start slow and enjoy it! I find it quite addictive now.
  9. I asked my bank teller for a stack of the envelopes they give when they give you cash. When one gets ratty I just replace it. I like the bank envelopes better than a mailing envelope because the money doesn't slip out of it as easily and there is a "coin" pouch so I can keep the change for each category!
  10. My DH's family does this too and while it is kind of fun, I also put a lot of thought into even the swap gifts. Last year two of my gifts were the ones NO ONE wanted and it got to be a big joke as to who would get stuck with them. My feelings got a bit bruised. They were fighting over some silly scarf that was probably 99c, but I had a few nicer things that got passed like poison. This year I am buying 5lb bags of M&Ms and being done. No thought required and at least the teens will want them. I am over the swap game.
  11. We gave out Capri-Suns, pencils and spider rings this year. My son said kids were pretty excited about the non-traditional treats. I just didn't want leftover candy in the house, and the Capri-Suns will get used in sack lunches. It was cheaper then bags of candy too! I will definitely do that again next year.
  12. A close friend of ours recently did the juice thing for the 10 "reboot" after seeing that video and he really went through some detox symptoms and quite honestly felt like carp for a good chunk of the time. It was hard on his digestive system at first. When he was done he was glad he did it, but then had to ease into solid foods. I know he would say to NOT do it while pregnant or nursing because there was some serious liver cleansing going on, and that would change your blood chemistry and other things. Not worth risking. Now eating more fruits and veggies wouldn't hurt so I would try to eat more of the super foods but just not do a drastic juice fast.
  13. Thanks! I just ordered it. I was needing a new math game.
  14. We are eating a lot of "whole foods" "trader joes" type foods, having gone to limited sugar, etc. I also live in the middle of no where with no "Whole Foods" in my state, and with Trader Joes 1-1/2 hours away. Are there any organic/whole food type coops or sites online that I can buy and have non-perishables shipped to me?
  15. My dd is 7 and was diagnosed with Lyme Disease today. Long story short we found a "bite"/boil looking sore on her back on Tuesday. The "bite" area was healing, on Saturday dd developed a fever that the dr on call when I called in on Saturday said was probably a virus. Sunday continued with a fever, and the "bite" was nearly healed. This morning she woke up, still with a fever, and with a bulls-eye ring around the "bite" and was taken to the dr. He agreed the "boil" was probably a tick bite, the fever an indicator of Lyme Disease, and the ring the clincher. He started her on Amoxocillin for 20 days. The other antibiotic (can't remember the name) couldn't be given to her because of her age - evidently it damages tooth enamel in young children. So my questions are - since we caught it early (Dr said it couldn't have been diagnosed as Lyme before the ring surfaced) will she recover fully? And is being on the Amoxocillin for 20 days enough? I don't want to miss the window of opportunity to knock this thing out from the start and if I have to push for more I want to be prepared.
  16. I have the Pre-Alg and Algebra I "generic" ones. They are the same as the Chalkdust ones.
  17. I did both of those guides last year (Preparing and Little Hearts) and we had a GREAT time!! You will LOVE it. We are doing Beyond, CTC and the new Rev2Rev this year. My yearly search for items to "tweak" my school choices has come to a stop. We are happy in HOD-land. :D
  18. The "just in case" does not have to been a seperation/divorce. My friend's husband died suddenly and somehow all the credit cards were closed within days of his death. She had not notified them, but somehow they all knew and they were closed and she could not use or access them because she was not the primary card holder. She had a hard time getting her own card because she had been a SAHM for years. She advised us all to get a card in our own names "just in case" something happened to our husbands and we needed to have access to credit.
  19. My friend was expecting #7 and called me to tell me before ANYONE else (other than her DH) because she said I was the only person that would squeal with delight and be happy for her. Her family and church would only criticize her so she wasn't going to tell them - she'd let her tummy do the talking when she started to show. But she was dying to tell someone and share her joy with someone. Thankfully I was that person for her. (She did the same when she found out #8 was on her way... due in November!!!) So I too make a point to give moms of many a smile and encouraging word.
  20. They are yummy! We take the camping all the time! We use Doritos instead of Fritos. Never had them with Fritos. You take a small lunch sized bag of Doritos and break it up a bit, put the seasoned meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. in the bag and eat it with a fork. Then you throw the empty bag away. It is like a walking taco salad. They are a big hit around here at football games and things and so easy to take camping.
  21. I completely know how you feel. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago after I already had my curriculum for the next year on the shelf. I couldn't help myself and got sucked in by the catalog and reviews and sold what I'd already purchased for dd. Thankfully it was a great decision and now all 3 of my kids are doing HOD! Again, I am not being helpful either, but I do know how you feel.
  22. I added Wordly Wise (because we enjoy it and it takes 10 min.) and Daily Geography Review (again, 10min a day) because Geography is important and keeps things fresh and it isn't a burden. We also added a Stebbing Art program for day 5 (since HOD is a 4 day program from Preparing and on) HOD is so complete we haven't really had to add things out of necessity.
  23. Katrina, I am assuming you would be using Little Hearts and Beyond with your kids? (Based on the ages in your siggy) I am doing Little Hearts and Preparing with mine as well as a 7th grader doing Beautiful Feet for history/lit. Next year I will have a Beyond, CTC and a Rev2Rev. ANYWAY, all that to say it is easier than I thought to juggle. The younger one is seriously done in under 2 hours. I start the day with Preparing and the History reading. Then I do the StoryTime box. After that, I have her work on the History Project/Research boxes while I do somethings with the LHFHG child. I just kind of bounce back and forth making sure they move onto the next thing. If I have to be busy with the Preparing child, I let the LHFHG child do some independent learning with puzzles, beads, dot to dot, playdoh, coloring, drawing, lacing cards, etc. that I have on our shelves. I think it is good for them to have some of that independent play/learning time - even in the early elementary years. Some days the LHFHG child doesn't really get into the meat of her program until late morning while the older one finishes up the independent work, but that is okay! I don't tie myself to a schedule of sorts. We just go with the flow of things knowing by the end of the day it all gets done and we've had some fun along the way.
  24. We have taken several one day classes, but friends of ours have taken several long term classes. I know they did an Anne of Green Gables one and an Oregon Trail one. I have been impressed with what they have done with those.
