  1. You guys are making this tough! I am supposed to have a book list finalized by tonight. I have all the other books we will be reading, minus this last one. I might see about waiting till the class starts in the fall and giving the group of kids a choice. Thank you all for your help!!
  2. You guys are great! Thanks! Right now I am leaning toward Carry On . . . but I can be easily swayed :) The other books we will be covering that semester are Number the Stars and The Witch of Blackbird Pond, if that helps.
  3. Exactly what I needed to hear. Having not read it myself, I was afraid it might be a bit boring or "wordy" for the students without enough action. Anyone else??
  4. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare or Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham I need one more book for my 6th - 8th grade literature tutorial class and can't choose. What says the hive? I have not read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. * We are covering The Witch of Blackbird Pond earler in the year which is also by Elizabeth George Speare, but there will be many months between. Thanks!!!
  5. If you were going to enroll your elementary age student (3rd grade & up) for a "literature class" at a tutorial program, what would you hope they would do/learn/cover in said class? It will be a one hour class that meets once a week for 10 weeks each semester. I am going to be teaching a couple in the fall and am curious as to what I should include. It will be 3rd - 5th, and 6th - 8th. Thanks! *posted same question on curriculum board, then realized it is probably better suited for here - sorry!
  6. Sorry! Just realized I should have this on a different board! If you were going to enroll your elementary age student (3rd grade & up) for a "literature class" at a tutorial program, what would you hope they would do/cover/learn in said class? It will be a one hour class that meets once a week for 10 weeks each semester. I am going to be teaching a couple in the fall and am curious as to what I should include. 7. Thank you so much!! That is exactly what I needed. I have only used MFW 1st once, two years ago. It worked well for my son, but I did notice that we moved quickly through the phonics. For him it was not a problem. For my daughter next year, I am not sure. She is bright and has flown through MFW Kindy. I am concerned that the revised MFW 1st will move too slow with phonics. Do you have a take on that? If I stick with the old I was planning on buying 2 sets of student sheets for my 2 remaining students. I had not thought about resell. I think I am leaning toward updating, would love to know a bit more about the phonics. Thanks again for your reply. I do appreciate it much!
  8. I searched the forums for this topic and couldn't find what I was looking for: I have the older edition of MFW 1st grade. My daughter will be doing 1st next year. Should I spend the money to upgrade to the new version? I read the post that dealt with the math revisions, but I'm not sure that will affect me. I follow MFW math recommendations loosely and supplement with Saxon. I do not use Singapore. Does anyone have any input or experience with the revised Learning God's Story in areas other than math? Thanks!!
  9. Love that idea WoolySocks! And thanks, plansrme, that is just the answer I needed.
  10. Thanks so much for the fun ideas! I was thinking down the road of hand/footprint. Just a little something to help them feel better about things. I had already thought about sending a picture - problem is my phone doesn't send pictures. But my husband will be around some on Mondays and Fridays so I could use his phone on those days. This new mom is very detail oriented and her hubby will be picking the baby up in the evenings. I had wondered about slipping a sheet in the diaper bag, a simple rundown of the day, so the momma can know the basic schedule - when she ate, slept, etc. Is that silly? I can tell it all to the dad but the info may never make it to mom :)
  11. I am going to be keeping a baby for a sweet couple so "momma" can go back to work for a while. They are a young couple and this is their first child. I want to do something special for them, specifically on the first day they leave her. Or maybe after the first week. Like a craft from baby to them or something. Any ideas? Also, anything I need to think about and prepare for ahead of time? I'm new to this childcare-in-my-home thing. We've already discussed schedule and payment issues. I have a safe place for baby to sleep. Mom is bringing all supplies. I have a list of emergency contact numbers as well as a back up plan in case something comes up with one of my own children. I just feel like I'm overlooking something. We start next Monday!! Thanks in advance for any help!
  12. Thank you! I did think about talking to the pharmacist. I've thought of several questions tonight. Why can I never think of them while I'm at the dr.'s office?
  13. Thank you Ameena! Yes, I am "fluffy" and she used a regular cuff on my forearm (between my elbow and hand). I sorta wondered about that high reading but my pressure has been creeping up so it might not be too far off.
  14. I had a dr. apt. today with an ob/gyn, yearly checkup, and my blood pressure was 209/101 -- very high. She went a little crazy and insisted that I start this medicine immediately. We didn't even talk about any female stuff. She did the exam but talked only about blood pressure the whole time. I'm hesitant because this is not her area of specialty. I obviously need to do something about my pressure, I just want to make sure this is the right med for me. Any advice out there? Any experience with this or other hbp meds? Thanks!
  15. Thanks guys! I will keep chugging the water and maybe get some cranberry supp. from the store. I have had some doozys before and will be heading to the doc. if this gets anything like those. I have not had one in years and I'm not sure why this one hit or why it is not so bad. I have never tried D-Mannose, is it pretty safe?
  16. Thanks so much! These replies have reminded me of the "ocean water" drink at Sonic which is blue PowerAde and sprite. It is quite yummy and I think it would go well with pineapple sherbet. I will pass this on, thanks for the help!
  17. On an entirely different note from my punch recipe question, I have a UTI. Will it pass without medication if I wait it out or does one have to have antibiotics to cure it? It is not as painful yet as I have had before and seems to get slightly better at the end of the day after drinking TONS of water. But the next morning it is "ouch" again until about lunch time.
  18. I have a friend who needs to make a light blue colored punch for a baby shower. Any ideas? Would prefer sherbet based if possible but will take any suggestions. Thanks!
  19. Thank you! I was pondering the idea of a hot dog "bar" with lots if different toppings available. Regional dogs would be fun! I agree about a house warming, I don't want to give any impression that gifts would be necessary.
  20. Here's the deal: DH has been serving as pastor at our church for almost 1 year now, he was "interim" pastor for 6 months prior to being called as "official" pastor. So we know these folks pretty well by now and they know us. Last November (so 7 months ago) we bought and moved into a house. A large group of our church was instrumental in helping us paint/clean/move and so have seen the house "in progress". Several have been back since we have moved in and settled. Shortly after moving in, dh told the church we would have an open house soon. (Lots of people were asking about the new place.) We have not yet had the open house, due to the holidays, a trip to Disney, family visits and school. We are ready now, but I feel like it's been too long to call it an "open house". Now it's just a "come hang out with the pastor's family and eat a hot dog" party. I need help coming up with a clever/fun name so I can make up an invitation flyer. And I am not creative so any other tips, advice and ideas for a gathering like this is greatly appreciated! *It's a smallish church, maybe around 60, so we're not talking about hundreds of people here. And there are tons of small children included in this number. Thanks!
  21. No, it was back on the ground this morning and was no longer alive. I guess it was meant to be, we did all we could. Thank you for asking about it.
  22. Thanks so much for the help ~ DH and I had already said if the baby comes back out we are going to let happen whatever happens. It doesn't help that I have 4 young children standing there looking at it saying "Awww, look at it. It's so cute! Can't we do something to help it Momma?" Meanwhile, the tiny, naked bird is laying there with a wide-open mouth, begging for help. (Well, at least that's my interpretation of the bird's chirps!) But I agree with both of you. God gave these creatures instincts and sometimes it is best if we don't interfere with these instincts. At last check the baby was still in the nest. Now I will go to bed hoping the whole lot of them doesn't die from an awful disease because we put it back in. :crying: Thanks again for your time and expertise!
  23. The bird is not alone, there are several other babies. I can't tell for sure how many, can't see them all but I can hear them up there. The mother/father keeps returning to the nest and feeding the others but this baby is 12 feet below the nest, on the ground. We have an outdoor cat and there are several others in the area so leaving it on the ground is not an option. There are no feathers, it looks brand new ~ eyes closed, pink skin. I want to just leave it alone, but that means certain death for the poor thing and I can't stand not at least trying. ETA: It is either a wren or sparrow of some sort, a small brown/gray bird. Also, my dh just climbed a ladder (again) and put it back in the nest. It is almost dark here so I'm hoping it stays in the nest overnight at least. I'm afraid it's gone through so much trauma that it's already too late. :(
  24. Has anyone had any success feeding a baby bird moistened cat food or cooked rice?
