  1. HIs surgeon didn't ask what meds he was on before the surgery? Often they have you stop aspirin! Also, they should have given instructions on what to take afterwards. Sigh.
  2. I'm just really disappointed this isn't some german pastry involving layers of flakey goodness.
  3. Has he been taking the aspirin AND the ibuprofen at the same time?!?! That would definitely blow out his gut lining!
  4. And as someone with a toddler, I LIKE walls, because then I can use baby gates to contain the little rascal! Open concept at my mom's house means chasing her constantly from one side of the house to the other because there is no way to contain her. So we can't settle on the living room couch and chat because 2 minutes later little miss adventure is trying to open the oven to see what's cooking, etc. In my house, we can baby gate her in the room we are in and not worry about her wandering off to make mischief. In fact, when we remodeled my kitchen my mother tried to convince me to knock down a wall, and I refused for exactly that reason.
  5. Im betting the ibuprofen messed up his stomach, and then the not eating but still taking diabetes meds dropped his blood sugar. Could you leave a message with whatever doctor prescribed the diabetes meds and ask if he should reduce or stop dose if not eating?
  6. Oops! Not sure how I got that mixed up! Yes, dog surgery is more expensive, and if it is a breed like a yorkie or other small breed prone to liver shunts you definitely want the lab work done. I've had one pet that I postponed the spay surgery on because she was anemic (adopted from the shelter with hookworms). And I've seen as a tech several that had liver abnormalities caught on bloodwork that would have made surgery dangerous. (I think one was a yorkie and one was a chihuahua.)
  7. I really hope for your sake that her increased appetite isn't a sign of pregnancy!
  8. Ginger actually causes GERD in many people, I'd be very careful with that. IT's one of my biggest triggers. My other thought is the diabetes...is he still taking his normal dose of medication even though he's not eating much? That could cause low blood sugar and weakness.
  9. Yes, it can happen that fast. Or he could have liver issues cropping up, which can cause GI pain.
  10. Yeah, 100 for a CBC is crazy pants for my area. But again, maybe this is a high cost of living area?
  11. Wait - this was after going on Ibuprofen 800mg? He may have given himself an ulcer! Ibuprofen can tear up the gut really fast in some people. And if it is bleeding he could be anemic from the blood loss, which would explain the weakness, etc. He needs to go to his primary doctor or better yet, a GI specialist ASAP.
  12. Remember, everyone, that prices will vary WILDLY because of cost of living. We have people who are in areas where a 3 bedroom house is less than 100K and people who live where a 3 bedroom house is no less than 900K. When property values vary that much so will the cost of owning a vet hospital, and those costs are passed on to the client. So what someone charges in a small town in Kansas will not look like what is charged in Silicon Valley. That said, in my area that would be very high for a cat neuter. And although I'm a former vet tech, for financial reasons I skipped the bloodwork and IV on my own cat when he was neutered, just because I trusted the staff and knew it would be literally a 10 minute or less procedure, and because we were going to neuter him no matter what..wasn't like blood work would effect that in the end. An intact male cat wasn't going to live in my house, or any house.
  13. https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/03/06/miss-walls-cry-for-help-from-woman-living-home-with-open-floor-plan/qLl9QX8REvsQ5gKmaeCvFL/story.html?fbclid=IwAR0bYL7ICzuaAB7egbhbcb9dugawdnfWpPFfDI-YUGtzG_ndpNTjnuBjf2Y
  14. Ok, so the CBC and the Chem 10 are the bloodwork. I'm happy to decipher the rest if you want. You can also ask if you can decline stuff, etc.
  15. Also, keep in mind that some places do subsidized neuter/spay that is partly funded by charities, or out of the practices proceeds, or even animal care and control dollars. So that hides the true cost. People here always ask why a spay is so much cheaper at "spay and save" versus the vet. Well, the doctors are volunteering their time, as are all the staff and they get tons of donations and have fundraisers. So yeah...of course it is cheaper!
  16. Part of it is that when going to a 24/7 vet that has an ER service the overhead is much higher. Think of what it would cost to get your normal cold or well visit done at the human emergency room! So that's part of it. That said, your estimate for the cat sounds high. Are you having them give you itemized quotes, so you can compare apples to apples? A cat neuter is a VERY short surgery and for a young, healthy cat is one of the only times I'd ever okay a surgery without bloodwork and an IV catheter/fluids, just because it is so freaking fast. Those are probably driving the cost up. But do call around, but again, get itemized quotes so you are comparing proper. A place with untrained staff, no pain meds, etc will of course be cheaper than a place with certified techs, best practices, heated OR tables, iv fluids, pre-op bloodwork, etc. Somewhere in the middle is probably what you are looking for.
  17. Either she is just communicating or she is in heat. Constant yowling is in heat. Meowing that goes away when you give her what she wants is just communicating. One of my , also a former stray, is VERY vocal. One might even say he is demanding. However, he's perfect in everyday and therefore you wouldn't say so in my presence, lol. (just kidding, he's a demanding little terrorist who will meow to wake the dead when he wants to be fed, and if you are too slow to respond to the meowing he will escalate to knocking things off the table until you feed him.)
  18. given how much higher the numbers are, can the power company be required to do something about this?
  19. Yup. I'm 99.9 percent sure I have dysgraphia. As in, I was an adult and homeschooling my son before I found out that writing isn't supposed to physically hurt! Never knew that! And in elementary I would get straight A's in school except handwriting, I got C's in handwriting. They used to make me sit in the back of the room copying out of dictionaries as if that would help. it didn't. It's still REALLy bad. Because of that I HATED writing assignments. Hated them. I also have ADHD so planning out a long assignment was torture. And now, I'm a published author with 6 books finished and another series about to be under contract. All because I learned to type, and a bit because of ADHD meds and strategies/tech. I use a writing software that breaks things down into chunks/scenes and color codes them, called Scrivener. And I write or die is an app that saved my ADHD butt...if you slow down or stop before you hit your goal is sets off an alarm, puts up pictures of spiders, etc, lol). Anyway, tech saved me. I went from hating writing to being a published author because of technology. My dyslexic daughter will never be able to take in knowledge as well with reading as she can with video, so we use a lot of documentaries, etc. And that just has to be okay. Now she's learning to type, and will start using writing software with spell check. As someone upthread said, it's like her prosthetic. That is CLASSIC dyslexia. She's smart, so she can guess via context, but can't actually decode. There are some amazing videos from The Reading League on dyslexia that explain that and more. I highly recommend them.
  20. Would 7 year old agree to use a 5pt seat instead of a booster? It's so much easier to buckle on their own. My 6 yr old is still in a 5pt partly for that reason - he is in the back seat of the van and would need help buckling if I put him in a booster. He can do the 5pt himself.
  21. So learn!!! You want them to learn, you show them you learning! Check to see if there are any classes, call the local state park and see if there are tours with a ranger, county agriculture extension classes, etc. Or get some guides and learn that way. Oh, and you tube is always a great resource!!
  22. Oh, I hadn't thought of cerenia! Mine is fine now for shorter trips, but I might get some to have for hour long drives to my moms or something.
  23. 1. Empty stomach, or at least mostly empty. 2. LOTS of practice short rides, maybe even practicing in the car running but in the driveway. Sometimes the nausea is a learned behavior, or at least conditioned, and they get anxious which aggravates the nausea.
  24. Notgrass fits that exactly. Very open and go, very clear cut, easy to grade.
  25. Yes, I really really liked them when I did them after surgery, and when pregnant. And some of them, depending on the instructor, were actually a great workout! Also, not sure what the reasons are for the yoga thing, but there is such a thing as Christian Yoga. It's for Christians, by Christians. I know someone who teaches it. Might make you more comfortable?
