  1. DD has finished Orbiting w/Logic series and we would like to move to Introductory Logic by Nance. Someone gave me 3rd Ed. books. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is great difference between 3rd Ed. and newer 4th Ed.??? From looking at 3rd Ed. I'm guessing we could save $100 and work thru it and then just move onto the Intermediate Logic, depending on the differences between the 2 Editions. Also, what is the difference between the Intermediate Logic 1st and 2nd Editions. Did you find DVD very helpful? Thank you wonderful ladies, your help keeps my homeschool moving:auto: LindaO
  2. Hi BeachPotato, Try Braingle.com ...........there's quite a selection there in various levels. Happy New Year!:)
  3. I really need help in deciding what to do ....I am so stressed out and overwhelmed .....but to make it short ...here goes..... I have 8 yo dd (adopted at birth) who has sensory, ADHD, and possible fetal alcohol issues. We are having TERRIBLE defiance, disobedience, bullying issues and our whole family is miserable. We have endured this for quite some time trying all kinds of techniques, like change of diet to almost organic, praising positive, etc. I'm just exhausted from all of this. I have NO help or support from friends, family, or spouse. I am back at a counselors office who deals with these issues and she suggest that I send child to public school for lots of reasons .....it would give both of us a break, they have staff specialized to help deal with issues, child will have to learn social skills, and she will be in a structure environment so that she will not be bored all day. The whole thing that gets my corn popping is that this child behaves so well for other people, she's very cooperative and pays attention ....just not me. She battles me all day arguing, whining, bullying and torturing her sister, she refuses to do school, she interrupts so that I cannot do school with her sister. Things need to be put up because she is always into things she shouldn't be and she needs constant attention. Therefore, I am forgetting where I put things, I get nothing done, and at the end of the day "I am not liking this anymore" and I am ready to run out the door and escape the torture myself. I am really not looking forward to dealing with the school system at all. I have a religious exemption and basically told the school I would NEVER send my children there. Then, what happens if school makes matters worse? I have already decided that I will probably pull her back out before she reaches 6th grade and so I will have to deal with that. She should be starting this year as 2nd grade. I am also under alot of stress because we are building an addition on to our house (for the past 8 years) and we are living in small quarters where we are all sharing 1 bedroom, no closets, and things are piling up everywhere because there is no where to put stuff. I've always grown up in a nice neat home and all this clutter is really getting me down too. Perhaps there is someone out there who has "been there, done that" or maybe you all could help me clear my mind so I can think straight. I'm feeling like the "Jet Blue" guy .....where's the shute.!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Is buying all of those MindBender books and other software programs getting a little expensive? After all, in these tough economic times, we moms have to appropriate our homeschool $ wisely. My daughter loved doing all of those grid puzzles in the MindBender books, but it was costing $. I found a website that took care of her “fixâ€. It has many different kinds of puzzles, games, software you can play online with others …and the best part about it is it is ABSOLUTELY FREE.!!!!! So …..â€knock your brains out†……..lol …….I did…… http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/index.php LindaO :001_smile:
  5. I am having behavioral problems with 6yo dd and she is seeing a behavioral specialist for ......the obvious. Basically .....DD absolutely refuses to obey, doesn't want to do any schoolwork (basic preschool stuff like writing her name or counting, days of week, etc.), and is always into mischief. Pediatrician and Behavior Spec.(BS) both are suggesting public school. BS says that she is a child who will not march to the beat of the drum and that by sending her to PS she will either march with the others or stand alone (in which case they will have services to deal with this). BS believes that DD needs to have a structured day where we wake up and do this, then do that, then this, etc. and that DD needs to be kept busy all day. I spend alot of time doing things and taking DD places for activities, but I also have a DD in 5th grade that I must teach and lessons to read and prepare for, so I cannot spend all day devoted to 6yoDD and constantly monitoring her every move. 6yo DD is so obedient and respectful to others adults of authority (like Sunday School, and Classical Conversations, and VBS, etc.), but not me. BS says that I need to look at the long term picture down the road and how 6yoDD behavior is affecting the rest of our family and what will she become if she doesn't learn to get along with others and obey the rules of society. After a day of torment and torture (day after day, 7/24) by the 6yo dominant, whiny, and defiant deva, I am almost convinced that this may actually be good for her and me. I will get a break from her, and vice versa, and she will be in a situation where her every move will be orchestrated and controlled by someone else; hence, the battle is not mine anymore. Please don't misunderstand ....I love DD ...just not her behavior ....so if this were your child .....what would you do???? I really appreciate the input ...I feel like I am stradling the fence and the wind is blowing me back and forth (PS to HS) on a daily basis. LindaO :bigear:
  6. and it is soooo much better than trying to use the free version. Things are so easy to edit and move around. For example. R&S English 5, I just asked it to copy and increment 1 for each lesson up to 128. It gave me a list of Lessons 1-128 and then I can schedule them for the whole year or just move them over a few at a time. I also added the workbook sheets and test. You can reuse the schedules for another child, view the assignments in calendar form, or teacher planner or student assignment sheet. It does more than I will probably ever use. But I did have to play around with it and refer to the User Manual to get the gist of some of the hard tasks. Before I bought it I went to the website and watched some of the videos that show how it works. That might be helpful in making you decision ...here is the link... http://www.homeschooltracker.com/tracker_plus.aspx look on the right side under "LEARN MORE" and go to the Training Videos. 8. We are just finishing up LFC Primer A and this has been our experience ....I have 9yo dd (just turned 10)... We watch the DVD ...DD likes it and it help with pronounciation ...otherwise he just basically regurgitates what's in the book ...and sometimes he explains something not in the book. Of course, :lurk5:extra. Then, the Primer A book has basically 3 pages per lesson. The first page is the memory work or vocabulary words. The second page is the grammar page and explains the grammar. The third page gives you practice on what you've learned. Personally, I don't think 1 page helps to cement it into my brain. Chant CD ...we listen to it to practice the vocabulary and to keep all that we have learned stuck in our heads. I have the Activity book and it has 3 fun pages for each chapter ...mazes, crosswords, matching, etc. DD and I really like these, they're fun to do, and it helps to practice the vocabulary. I have also printed all the extra pages off the website for additional practice, but most of them are test/quizzes which we use to test our knowledge to see how much stuck to our brains. The history reader, ...well, I'm still trying to acquaint myself with how that works, but I know my DD would just dive into that too! I bought the whole package and I am happy with it ....all the extras just help to reinforce everything that is learned ...since they do about 10 vocabulary words each chapter and a chapter maxim (which is like a famous latin quote), it can give the brain an intense workout! HTH....Linda
  9. I have a 2 small tatoos that I got back in 1976. I did an application for life insurance back in 2000 and was turned down because they said I had Hepatitis C. You can have it for years and years and never know it .... I remember having to hold my 2yo down while they drew blood from her arm so that she could be tested ...since it can be transmitted via birth...but, thank God, she was unaffected .....it's something worth considering tho'..... definately make sure they are sanitary. HTH
  10. I don't want to start English 5 until September when we begin our school year .....what would you do to keep the skills fresh in 10yodd's brain ??? Would something like Editor in Chief be useful to complete over the summer? Any other suggestions would be of great help!!!:D LindaO
