  1. Has anyone used the Florida Unit Study by Kim Sutter? Can you give me a review? I tried doing a search (several times) and couldn't find anything on it. I'm thinking of buying it tomorrow with my HERI member discount online with ROCK Solid, but wanted to know if people liked it or not first. Thanks! BTW, will probably get the Big Reproducible Book to go with it.
  2. Melanie, yes, we are fellow Floridians! This is the first class she has taken with FLVS. It's not her favorite and someone did give me Rosetta Stone to use as a back up. I really want her to stick with it. Both of my inlaws in are poor health and I am needed a lot to help them and I am still needed a lot with my 2nd grader. Thanks for letting me know about Piano credits. She was part of the youth drama team at church last year and will continue with it this year, so I need to look into that. She participates in the youth choir as well and I know he is teaching them some theory, etc--maybe a full credit after 4 years? Thank you for the encouraging words. I felt like I was drowning and was having trouble muddling through it all! :) Patty
  3. I need some help ironing out my dd's 9th grade plans. I am having some problems and am struggling with thinking/focusing. Can you wonderful ladies give me some feedback? Algebra 1 (Teaching Textbooks) 1 credit Biology w/labs (Abeka) 1 credit American History (SL Core 100) 1 credit Bible (our own plan) PE (C25K and other various activities) 1 credit Spanish 1 (FLVS) 1 credit Art Appreciation (outside class) .5 credit Choir/Drama/Piano/Life Skills (not sure how to document/assign credits yet) English 1 (Literature selections, finishing up a couple lessons in WriteShop1 and moving into WriteShop2, Apples: Spelling drills for secondary students) 1 credit Vocab questions: I have the following resources for vocab: Wordly Wise, Critical Thinking Word Roots Level A, Rummy Roots game, and I also have Analogies 1 (from reading the intro, it also looks like more vocab). This is not my "academic" child and I do not want to overwhelm her. I'm thinking maybe do the analogies to help with her thinking/processing issues and to also cover vocab then add in the Word Roots from Critical Thinking and play Rummy Roots together. (save Wordly Wise for next year, maybe?) Critical Thinking questions: I have The Thinking Toolbox, Mind Benders B1/B2, Get Me Out of Here, and Logic Spiders Software all from Critical Thinking. (does Analogies count as Critical Thinking too?) Could we use the software from Critical Thinking and the Analogies book and maybe use Thinking Toolbox next year? It's just starting to look overwhelming and I'm having trouble thinking my way through this. Thanks so much for your suggestions! Patty
  4. I'm trying to figure out what our plans will be for 9th grade. Have any of you used HO level 2 for 9th grade? Could I give a credit for this? I'm not sure that's she's ready for level 3. I think level 2 would teach her some great research skills. Would it be enough literature and writing or would you add to it for a 9th grader? Thanks for any input. Patty
  5. I had surgery last summer and couldn't make convention. I ended up buying it through their website online. If you spend over a $100 (I think it was) you got free shipping. At convention, I think it was a 10% discount and maybe free shipping. By the time I would have bought my ticket to convention, I wouldn't have saved much. A friend of mine ordered at convention the same time I ordered online and I received mine MUCH faster. You do get extra points to spend through the co-op, though. As for the program itself...my two daughters have used Abeka for math, so this was a big step of faith for me. We LOVE it! It is very teacher intensive and completely hands on (very minimal worksheets). Oh my...he has learned SO MUCH, and so much more easily and fun. I highly recommend it! Patty
  6. we have used Abeka (okay as long as you don't make them do every exercise), Shurley English, and Winstom Grammar. We are actually going back to Shurley this year. The jingles helped my kids.
  7. I didn't read everyone's replies, so I apologize if this has already been said. I take my griddle. I have one nice breakfast and easy breakfasts the other days. We buy the shake and pour bisquick pancake mix (just add water), buy a gallon water. We buy the sweet 16 donuts, pop tarts, I've also bought the precooked bacon to make on pancake day. We do an easy breakfast the day were packing up to leave. We bring peanut butter and jelly and loaf of bread for sandwiches for lunch every day with chips. It's easy. I've made hamburgers and hotdogs on my griddle. (which is our normal menu) I did have some of those perdue shortcuts (chicken strips in the freezer I took to cook our first night last fall. I put a small alum pan on the griddle dumped a can of corn in with the chicken strips, heated and did potatoes with it I think. A friend of mine makes spagetti and puts in her crock pot to take the day they leave for dinner. Lots of people make chili in their crock pots at the camp site. I didn't want to be stuck in the tent with my family after a chili dinner, if you know what I mean. ;) We usually lean towards easy. We may make a McDonald's run one night. I'm on vacation too, after all. Don't forget your stuff for smores. It's a must have every night around the campfire. Camping is something new for me and my husband. Neither of us did it growing, but we LOVE camping with our kids. We also tent camp. Because we're in FL we only tent camp in the spring and fall. It's just too hot to try it any other time, we'd all be too grouchy and miserable. It's been a great bonding time for our family! Enjoy!
  8. I bought the notebooking pages from Notebooking Nook for English From The Roots Up Volume I. It's about 100 pages. I haven't printed them yet, because I need color ink. So, I wanted to buy the notebooks when I go buy the ink. Does anyone have a suggestion on how big of a 3 ring binder I should get. I think a 1/2 inch will hold it, but I'm wondering if it will be too full for them to work from. Has anyone used these notebooking pages? And if so, can you share what size binder worked best for you? Thanks, Patty
  9. Life has been crazy and I can't find time to get on this board! I was able to borrow ATW and I bought the Trail Guide at a used sale for $2. It looks like the ATW might be more in depth for my 8th grader. Thanks for the heads up about the notebook pages! I'm still trying to get my head screwed on straight. I'll post a little later what I've decided to try. Thanks again!
  10. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on Apologia's Who Is God Worldview Curriculum https://apologia.securesites.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=42&products_id=136 Hopefully that link works. We usually read the Bible together and discuss, but I was curious about this. Has anyone used it or heard anything about it? Thanks, Patty
