  1. Ok, I FINALLY got my WTM book :D I am reading the section on grammar for my third grader and I am confused. Maybe it will clear up the more I read, but I am taking notes and I cannot get past this. They mention FLL and basically make it seem that it should only be used for 1st and 2nd grade. It says that for 3rd and 4th they recommend I should either get R&S English or Voyages in English for grammar. From what I read on this board previously I thought that they recommended FLL3 for grammar? I am totally confused now.
  2. I would move, my DH wont. Him and his grandpa built this house and garage and sheds. We raise deer and it would be extremely hard to move them. Its almost finacially impossible right now. I could throw all that to the wind and go no matter what but DH is hard to convince of any change. It would have to be them actually following through with a threat to get Dh to go I think. Which is not ideal..................
  3. I so would. DH so won't. I am stuck here. For now, I want to just try and keep all my ducks in a row and follow the law. I also don't want them to think they have that kind of control over us. We know we are good, Godly, loving parents and that no one could ever prove that we have done any harm to our kids. I just dread having to defend myself or waste money we dont have on a lawyer. Right now we are standing ground. I guess as long as I ignore them as much as possible, and get DH to do the same I will be doing all I can. plus a ton of prayer.
  4. I am sooo waiting for that baby to arrive too!!! The suspense is killing me
  5. If it were totally up to me, I would move away and never look back. My DH on the other hand, has a hard time with this. His grandpa raised him and he is all he has. Grandpa doesn't get involved in the family issues one way or another. So my we allow him to see and talk to the kids on occasion. My DH has a very hard time in keeping his mouth shut about things. He doesnt mean to let a lot of info out, but he does. We will just have to have a really good talk about all this and see what to do. I know there is no way we can 100% cut them out as long as we live here. And my Dh will not move. I will just try and drill in his head that the kids come first no matter what. So long as we live here, he will have to keep his mouth shut!
  6. Thank you for this. I am going to print it out for DH to read too!
  7. THANK YOU. I needed to hear that! I am used to dealing with them and they never agree with anything. They wanted to call DCFS because I once sent my DD to bed without dinner because she refused to eat a meal that she has eaten for 5 years. It was her being tired and crabby and me disciplining. They talk about me behind my back constantly, but this is a big deal to me. My parents dont 100% agree with my decision, but they support me. So doing this is a big deal. :001_smile:
  8. I so would have cut all ties, but.... they live next door (we are rural so they are not right on top of us, but they can see us) They stalk us and will ask why I ddint put my child on the bus etc. Also one of them works at the ps. They do tend to sometimes show up unannounced. :-( Its a huge mess. We live in a small town and no matter what they will find out. thank you for all advice so far!!!
  9. Theres a lot of back story...heres the short version. My in-laws are insane. All of them. Yes, I know most are, but these people hate each other and I barely have them around my kids because they are horrible. They have tried to get my husband in trouble with the law (for something he did not do.) They are truly mean and hateful. MIL has threatened to try and take our kids away (I know she cant but she threatens a lot of things like calling DCFS) Anyways, when they find out I am going to be HS'ing, its going to be warfare. I live in Illinois and so from all I have read, I dont have any kind of rules to abide by so they technically cannot do much to us. The law even states that truancy cases cannot be conducted by DCFS, that is soley up to the school district. That being said, I still want to cover my behind as much as possible. I am going to join the HSLDA so that if I need legal help it is there. I was just wondering if anyone here has had any similar problems and/or any advice. I am an organizational freak, so keeping records is something I am going to do anyways. thanks!!
  10. I heard the UPS truck pull up yesterday and I RUN to meet him (I think I may have even did a skip or two) because I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting my WTM book...only to find out its my husbands taxidermy supplies. What a bummer and now I am sure the UPS guy thinks I am a freak :D I am d y i n g to get my hands on that book.
  11. If I am going to go with FLL and WWE, do I need anything else for LA. Will I need a seperate Spelling program? (My DD is a good speller, made it to the Spelling Bee and recv'd a perfect A in spelling in ps) thanks!
  12. Thank you! A. For not thinking me annoying B. for the awesome explanations I am anxiously awaiting my copy of TWTM. I am sure that book will clear up so much for me, I am just dying to get rolling on curriculum. I must practice patience :D
  13. OK, thanks in advance for reading about me being overwhelmed still :001_smile: My DD7 is going to be starting 3rd. Its my first year HS'ing. I am reading a lot of threads about newbies needing to just relax and start slow, but then I see the threads with peoples 3rd grade curriculum and I start to get worried. I also printed out a few lists of what 3rd graders need to know and its like :001_huh: On top of having all the cores and extras covered, I see everyone doing narration, copywork, dictation, memory work, notebooking, journaling..... I have no clue how I will ever fit all this in. I know that mostly I need to combine things so I am wondering how you do it. I have been reading and searching threads for weeks. (maybe I need to stop this LOL) Should I just make copywork part of LA, memory work part of bible time, narration part of Science and start notebooking just History? It almost seems to me that a lot of people are making all these things little mini subjects.Or am I just freaking out and making this all too hard? I really dont want to be annoying here at all. I am truly just wanting to make sure I do what is best for my DD. thank you so much in advance!
  14. I am totally new here and feel free to just ignore me...but I do scrapbook. And I love to organize. I was wondering if some kind of clear plastic dividers that fit in a 3 ring binder may work? I do not know how big your figures are ( I have not even begun to delve into the world of timelines) Then you could organize them by year ranges or something, or at leaast just flip through it and be able to see them all?????? Maybe even some kind of photo album would also work?
  15. Any recommendations for which one I would use? This is our first year HS'ing and I am not sure what to choose. Biology and Earth Science say for grades 1-3 and Chemistry 2-4 I am awaiting my TWTM book, but I think I read she recommends Chemistry for 3rd? Has anyone used or looked at Chem? Is it a good fit for 3rd? My DD loves Biology and Earth Science, but has covered those last year is ps, so I dont know if I should repeat them because she wants to and add living books, or if she'd be bored. thanks!!!
  16. Most threads I have read say they use MEP with or as a supplement. So does anyone simply use MEP and for what grade level? Do you think that this program is OK on its own.
  17. This site is AWESOME. Thank you. My DD and I scrapbook, so I hope to use notebooking A LOT. We will be doing this starting July 1st and going through next summer, but I am not worried if it all gets done. Thanks for the caution, I want to keep it real.
  18. I am anxiously awaiting my copy of TWTM....Now that I am reading more I am thinking of going to FLL and WWE and dropping R&S. Also SW is looking real good. ARGH!!! SO: FLL3 WWE 3 SW level C SOTW 1&2 (I am not super worried on how far we get) Math Mammoth Elemental Science Chemistry Reading will be from living books and my own lists. We will be doing some copywork, dictation, narration, and notebooking.
  19. No plan yet, i was going to wait until I bought the book and AG and kind of map it out. From what I read and some feedback I recieved from another thread I posted (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180525), I believe R&S would be enough and I just had to supplement Spelling. Maybe this isnt the case?? I guess I will find out when I get the book. I do plan on doing some copywork, probably mostly bible verses and poems, etc. She did some cursive in 3rd grade, but will need a little more of it to form words perfectly. I plan on her reading from AO list (and a few other lists I have saved)
  20. Keep in mind this is my first year beginning HS and I am kinda lost . I have DD7 DS4 DS2. Here is what I have so far for 3rd grade: Please feel free to give any suggestion, You can only help me :) Math Mammoth SOTW 1 + 2 (we are starting July 1st and going year round) R&S English Apologia- astronomy PE is covered with outside activites, soccer, and archery etc. art- whatever we want to do at the time music- piano Did I cover everything? *UPDATE* after more research I decided to take out Spelling. My DD was in the Spellig Bee and is a natural speller. I will just throow it in as needed with some lists from Google.
  21. YES it is, at least the same thing happened to me. I am using a mat for people to walk on, and people take advantage of me. I am just really relaxed and laid back and I let things slide off my back. Well, usually too much stuff. but I finally stood up to a friend who was using me as a free babysitter for an entire summer and things went BAD. She yelled at me and called me horrible names, made me feel like total crap, and I didn't do a single thing wrong. Then I had another friend who kept doing things to upset my DD and I stood up to her and it was a mess. I hate standing up and saying things, it has to be REAL bad before I do and it always turns out horribly. But these people weren't real friends then if they would do those things and take advantage of me. It was what had to be done. I have to seriously toughen up before I tell more people about my HS decision.
  22. I posted the other thread on "socialization" and it has me wondering.....Do any of you work from home and HS? My DD7 will be starting 3rd and then I have a DS4 and a DS2. I will be babysitting 2 babies throughout the Fall. They are teachers kids and will not be at my house anytime school is out or weekends. I am totally sure I can handle this, and to get a little "ahead" I am starting DD7 July 1st. I plan to school year round anyways. I am uber organized and although this will be my first year HS'ing I feel that I can get it all done (and I know things wont go smooth for awhile, I am totally fine with that) BTW both of my babysitting parents also have back up in laws that will take their kids anytime. SO I am going to take some planned days off to do some field trips and things like that. I am just kind of wondering how many of you work from home? Do any of you work/babysit pretty much full time where you can't go out and do too many things during the week?
  23. I love hearing all your thoughts and answers you give out. My main issue is: I do want my kids to socialize, but even in ps I dont want them to do too much of that at school. I feel that with all their recesses, "gym classes", breaks, "fun days" etc.. that they are doing too much socializing and not enough learning. A friend of mine volunteered at ps and said she clocked a total of 1 hour 45 mins the 1st graders spent actually in the classroom learning with their teacher. I know kids need breaks and fun also, but then why shall I send them away for 7 hours where they are interacting with the exact same kids all day?, and learning for 1 hour 45 mins? grrrrrr... One problem people see with me is that I also babysit, so I am unable to leave the house everyday until 4:30 pm, so why not send my kids to school since I cannot go anywhere anyways. Which I will only be sitting this upcoming school year to get us out of debt and the no more sitting after that. I am starting my HS July 1st so we are settled in and a little ahead before the babysitting kids start. One is starting mid August and the other not until October. Anyways, my kids will be able to interact with each other and the babysitting kids, and my DD will still be in Scouts and soccer. Plus she can see her "real" friends after school time as she has her entire life. What annoys me about this is do all PS kids stop "socializing" all summer when they are not in a classroom surrounded by the same people?? That was my answer to the mom that asked me that question. If PS kids can still be "normal" and can socialize through the summer then what is the difference with my HS'ing in the Fall?? And all she said was "summer is a break" GEEZE Its funny how no one questioned me becoming a SAHM and not sending my kids to daycare. No one worried about my kids becoming well socialized then.
  24. OK...since we officially decided to start homeschooling all I hear about is "are your kids going to be well socialized?" Well I do not plan on keeping them locked in the house 24/7 and my DD7 already has friends so she will be fine. My DD4 is pretty shy and quiet, so even if I sent him to ps he wouldnt easily make friends for himself. I am 0trying to find a HS group, but there are none near me (closest is 4o mins away) PLUS there are MANY children at school that I do not want them to socialize with. I have read some articles about this and I know that my kids will be fine. but what do you say to people when they ask that? I mean I simply say "yes they will be fine thanks for worrying" but for people like my parents, they want a deeper answer. Someone said that since they won't be dealing with "all different kinds of kids" that my children wont know how to deal with "real life" when it hits. In my heart, I am not worried, but I am kind of interested in all your experiences/answers. I knew I was going to have to deal with all this stuff at some point. SIGH
