  1. A 45 minute wait would be considered short in my town. We drive an hour each way to the Dr., because even with 2 hours on the road, it is still shorter than waiting to see a Dr. here in town. I've waited as long as 3 hours. The sad thing is, I grew up thinking 2 hour waits were normal.
  2. This recipe came from my mother-in-law. Peach Honey 4 lbs peaches 3 cups sugar - can be altered to taste Slice peaches, put in saucepan with sugar. Let simmer 20 minutes. She left her as is, put into canning jars, and froze. I use an immersion blender to puree first, then put into canning jars. This doesn't get thick like jelly, but stays a sauce-like consistency. Great on pancakes and ice cream!
  3. No, but DH is a mechanic. A tie would actually be dangerous in his situation. He does wear a tie to funerals, and to church on Easter and Christmas.
  4. I love Mary Kay's Creme to Powder foundation. You don't need an expensive exfoliating product, just a little baking soda mixed with your normal face wash. I also use bronzer instead of blush. I also use a very nude shade of lipstick, then use a tinted gloss over it. It gives just a bit of color.
  5. We only have a half acre, which is considered small. We would love to have 2 to 5 acres someday.
  6. I recently looked into the cost of shipping to the UK. It was going to cost $80 to ship about 5 lbs worth of books. This was regular USPS, not UPS.
  7. My oldest is only 9, so I'm really not qualified to answer this, but I think it would work. It is written for 4th to 8th grade. I would probably require a 7th grader to read different biographies and more of the advanced reading. There are great book lists in the guide. You could also use some of the books that SL uses to supplement. I would probably also use separate English and spelling programs, too.
  8. Please keep in mind I used the word "adequate". I think library books are very useful, especially for illustrations. If one has access to the internet, I think you could do it without library books. Dorian does have a lot of great info in the guides, but seeing what she is talking about is great. Plus, she does say stuff like "look for examples of Doric columns in your books about Ancient Greece" or "look for example of Ancient Egyptian art". So, I do think some type of book with illustrations or the internet is very helpful, but not required.
  9. Yesterday, my girls made a TV out of a cardboard box. They even made up their own TV shows and acted them out. My favorite was "Colonial Girls" where Elizabeth and Felicity (The AG dolls) were chased by a dinosaur. Sorry - I didn't see the word "with". They did the TV thing on their own. With my kids....school. I also let DD6 help me make biscuits. Otherwise, they were on their own yesterday after school was over. Today we're going to grandma's. Yeah for grandma's.!
  10. I too, feel, you could do an adequate job without any library books. (Keep in mind we have only done Egypt). There is quite a bit of commentary in the guide. I did check out books, though. Mainly, we used them for the pictures. We also used the internet too. We did not read an additional 30-45 minutes daily as recommended. As for the writing, I believe she goes step by step. Today, I read a 5 sentence paragraph. The student was supposed to take 4 key words from each sentence then rewrite the paragraph. Tomorrow, the student is then assigned to polish up the paragraph, and re-write it. The books listed on the website are required. For Ancient Greek, we will be reading Aesop's Fables and some Greek Myths. The only reason I don't use all the LA suggestions is because it's easier for me to use a text.
  11. Go ahead and paint. It's expensive, but really makes a big impact. But, I say this, and have wallpaper issues of my own. I keep saying I'm going to peel it off and paint, but never do. Maybe I should take my own advice.:)
  12. I am currently using this, we just started Ancient Greece this week. The lesson plans include daily Language Arts Plans. These include spelling, writing, and grammar. For me, it is easier to use a standard text-book program for these, so I use R&S. It's just something I do, because it's easier to wrap my brain around. I don't see how all students grades 4-8 could use the exact same spelling lessons. But, that's just me. Having said that, I'm sure you could use the LA plans included, and not supplement. But, you do have to use your own math. There are no math plans included. We have only done the Ancient Egypt unit, and my girls had a blast. I ordered the K-3 supplement, and used quite a few activities out of it. I highly recommend this program. There is also a yahoo group. Yes,I would use again. I am planning on using A New World of Adventure next year.
  13. I usually buy a cheap $4 or $5 pre made planner.
  14. My experience has been that if the order is less than $35, it is shipped USPS with no shipping notice. Everything over $35 has been UPS with a shipping notice. If there is a backorder, they always email me, and they will hold the order a week. Even with a backorder, I have always gotten my orders in less than 10 days.
  15. Do I need to stay on grade level if I order the Singapore CWP, or should I go a grade below?
  16. Oops - Title should read "supplementation" After reading some of the math threads, I'm wondering if I need to supplement our BJU math. I have one who will be using 1st, and the other using 5th. Just curious if anyone else supplements BJU math. If so, could you tell me what you use? Thanks
  17. We just finished Adventures, and did not use MFW's science. Instead, we did Exploring Creation Zoology III. It worked out perfectly for us.
  18. I've ordered everything, but I have a $3.50 item backordered.
  19. Lamp Post Publishing says BJU uses a spiral approach with mastery learning. So I guess BJU falls somewhere between mastery and spiral.
  20. I used it with a first grader and a three year old. They both loved it. I bought Children Around the World and an animal encyclopedia to use with it. I also used homeschoolshare.com for printables.
  21. We school year round. I love the flexibility it gives us. Recently I had some unexpected medical tests (nothing major), so we were able to cancel school for a couple of days without really effecting our school schedule. I don't do school every day in the summer, but I try to do a couple of subjects a week. That way, during the regular school year, we can take off a Friday to run errands, or go the park on a really nice day.
  22. I used FIAR for K with my oldest. I loved it, she didn't. Have you heard of homeschoolshare.com? They have units very similar to FIAR. You could try one out to see how you like it.
  23. I don't have little ones, but the best time to do school is when you have the fewest distraction. If it's afternoon, then go for it.
  24. I don't know if this will help, but I just ordered a BJU math TM from Amazon, for a $1 plus shipping. I know some sellers on Amazon aren't always trustworthy, but this TM was in excellent condition. I also get stuff from paperbackswap.com. But, I'll join your pity party. :) I'm trying really hard to keep expenses down this year.
