  1. Ok, now that I have ds 13 situation figured out I need to deal with ds10s. We pulled him last year for many reasons: BULLYING (this was really really bad, like go beat up by 4 kids at a baseball game bad), he has dysgraphia and dyslexia (never formally dx but my ds 13 has been and he has many of the same problems) school said he would just be a really bad speller, constant tummy aches, chewing on everything (yep, he would eat his pencil-eraser and everything..shirts, nose picking, finger nails), calling home 3x a week or more from school, limited hearing(almost deaf in one ear). I have been working with him at home with the spelling, reading, and dygraphia and he has made some improvement. The chewing has disappeared (this took until Christmas time!), no more tummy aches! He seems much happier. However, he is lonely. His brother is no longer his playmate (ugh teens), he really hasn't found a friend in our hs group. We did go to the Y and he did have religion class (we wanted scouts but this was the same time as religion). He has kept a couple of ps friends but they are busy during the school year doing homework after school so they can't talk much during the week.Of course when they do, they talk about all the "fun" stuff he is missing at school! He feels left out and complains about it a lot.All this coming from the kid that begged me to hs him!:001_huh: We live in a small town so it is hard to find things for him. He wants to go back to school. I don't know what to do. I don't know if I should send him back and see how he does. My dh doesn't care if they ever go back. I really really can't stand this school and another school is not an option. I have straddled the ps and hs fence before and to be honest it is exhausting for me to do school with my oldest then again in the evening with the ps b/c he didn't get anything done in school...I am willing to do it again if it makes him happy. This year was a huge adjustment just trying to figure out how to hs 2 for me so it really wasn't a steller year. I just don't know what to do...what would you do?
  2. I just wanted to let everyone know that you can purchase all the Verticy components separately. For example if you just wanted the core, math, and grammar comp, you can purchase those things and only those things! This is the first time they are doing this! I am so excited because we do not need the phonics so it will drastically reduce the cost of the program.:001_smile::001_smile:
  3. Because Shari-you are like me and you are tired of putting a curriculum together, just to find that it isn't working! Consider this a smack!! (with a wet noodle of course) Seriously, I was talking to a lady at my church about her son and how she hs. He is dyslexic, almost deaf, and has other difficulties. School said he would never read or write-now he attends a university working on his Masters in Library science! Anyway, she said she always used Calvert as a spine for what he needed to know (back before they had Verticy). Then she did hands on, read together, and he answered most things orally. I was AMAZED! Of course she said it was not nearly as expensive as it is today, however, if she could swing it she would do it again in a heart beat. After Calvert she went to OM for high school. She said that is all they had at the time and that she would feel overwhelmed too if she as as much to choose from! We are using Calvert w/o all of the Verticy next year, while there is a lot of tweaking I feel the year we used them was really our most successful year. Of course he is also going to see a OG tutor. This tutor discovered a problem that my son had that was in the report but was never address by the school. She said this is why no matter what kind of phonics program I or the school was using could be successful because of this issue. No vacation this year for us but in the end I am confident he will be ready for high school! Now go and get some sun and take a break for a while;)! I'll say a prayer for you and all of the other moms on this board who are in the trenches everyday agonizing over what to do next!
  4. I had this problem as well, I called them and they said that the school has to call them to unlock the books...because they are copyrighted for school use onl:001_huh:, I also had problems with books I had on disk that kurzweil would not read because they were copyrighted as well. You could call the school to see if they could unlock it?
  5. I second this!:iagree: We used the Yellow and Green Levels of Verticy.
  6. We use this as part of Verticy by Calvert writing and grammar. It has grammar in it. It does not do any diagramming. Verticy has you skipping around doing both the grammar and the writing at the same time. I can only speak for using it with Verticy though. Good luck! Even after completing 2 levels of Verticy my ds can write an awesome paragraph but can't do punctuation to save is his. He will always need a proof reader. I asked my dh to build a chair that give a little jolt every time he forgets capitalizing and punctuation  That may be the only way he will remember!
  7. Try Hands of A Child Lapbooks. You can order them already printed! My oldest loved them and you can get them in just about any subject. http://www.handsofachild.com :001_smile:
  8. I have a book recommendation for all of us re-evaluating our home school for next year. It is call Teaching Teens with ADD, ADHD, & Executive Function Deficits by Chris A. Zeigler Dendy. This book is chocked full of ways to accommodate our kids learning styles, how to handle aademic and learning issues, and handling organization skills. While it is written for the classroom teacher I found it extreamly helpful! I inter loaned it from our local library. It is defintely worth your time!:001_smile:
  9. Thanks! How does the experiments look? Are there many? This will most likely be the deciding factor of whether or not we use this. :001_smile:
  10. Oh how I wish I had this problem! Congratulations! I think it is wonderful! As long and school work and chores are done I wouldn't worry about it at all!:001_smile:
  11. Has anyone done this with their middlers? How was it? Did you use the online or the textbook program? Do you need the TM? Were there lots of experiments? Did you think it was worth it? TIA:D
  12. We've been 9 times and still love it! :001_wub: Magic Kingdom: Everything!! Not sure if Big Thunder Rail road is open though..Catch the parade and Wishes..Get a seat in front of the Castle..we loved this show during our last trip in April! Epcot: Soarin! As stop at all the kids stations as you travel "around the world". Talk to the cast members in the countries..They love to answer questions about the country they are from! MGM: Star Wars for sure! No two rides are the same, Indiana Jones, Toy story (at park opening have one adult race back to the back of the park to get fast passes for this!), Beauty and the Beast is great, Muppets, Lights Camera Action is Loved by everyone! End with Fantasmic! Animal Kingdom: Everest is cool! Take your time and see the animals.Do the Bird show! Bugs life is cool but may be too much for little ones so sit near the back. Pick some restaurants and try NOW to make ADRs for them! You may consider having a night off from the parks and going to Trails End for dinner and enjoy the light parade, its a good place to let the kids play! Or you can go to the Poly to see the parade (doubt you'll be able to get any table service at this resort now but you can try!) Make sure to take advantage of the Baby swap! I see you have some littles! The best advice I can give is to pick a few things in the park and do those..take an afternoon break (about 11:00 am) go back nap swim, enjoy the small things then go back to the park. If you try to do it all you will be so overwhelmed! Take lots of breaks! Before you know it you'll be a Mousejunkie like the rest of us!
  13. I am in need of someone here to help me...or talk me down..or something..! My DS will be in 8th grade next year and I am at a total loss with him. Has anyone here successfully graduated a child with dyslexia and dysgraphia? I need some advice as to how to do this...without losing my mind. I just need some guidance and (maybe a kick in the rear)...If you have the time please send me a PM. Thanks!
  14. No suggestions...feeling the same way..dealing with the same thing...all I can offer is :grouphug:
  15. I would pull him now. This would be less time you will have to spend on undoing any damage done.It will give you and him a chance to get to know eachother and how he operates (what are his learning style, ect.) before next school year. I would recommend unschooling until the end of the year. Have fun and enjoy this time and don't focus on formal schooling until next year. Still have structure but focus on other things beside academics. Don't order any curriculum until this summer so you don't waste your money like I did! Find a homeschool group in your area so you can get some support too. HSing mom's who have done this for many years are the best source of information! Ask LOTS of question here on the hive too!!;) Goodluck!
  16. This is something I would run by your ENT. I know my son had a really bad bacterial infection that appeared to be cleared up but he had to do several rounds of antibiotics to clear it up. We also had to use a mixture of water and vinegar in his ear (not fun). I DO NOT recommend this without the supervision of an ENT.
  17. I don't know much about PDD-NOS kids but my son has had tubes since he was 9 months old ( he had an ear infection every month since he was 3 days old). Be sure that you have your ENT clearly state the complications that can occur with tubes. My son fell into the 1% that had complications due to tubes. He ended up having ear drum replacement surgery. It is likely that he will have to do it again in the near future due to scar tissue in the ear. However, your son is not mine. I don't want to scare you but just to let you know the complications are real. Could it be that if he is sucking his thumb he is picking up more germs thus leading to more illness? My concern is that the infections are not due to lack of maturity of the ear but to virus that cause ear infections. Were all the infections completely cleared up? My son had a problem (even with tubes) where we thought the infection was cleared up (dr gave a clean bill of health on the rechecks) and then 3 weeks later we were back in the dr office because the drops weren't working. I would ask the ENT if there are any other alternatives to tubes. Tubes will not prevent ear infections but they will all the ear to drain thus causing less damage to the drum (not to mention pain). We had no choice but to put in tubes as my ds was losing hearing with each infection not to mention building a resistance to antibiotics. Sorry that I am not much help but I just wanted you to know that the complications can be real. Good luck!:grouphug:
  18. Hi all! I just posted Barton Level 1 and Verticy on the for sale board!:001_smile:
  19. I was wondering if anyone has enrolled with Seton late in the school year? If so, what was your experience? I am looking at enrolling my 5th and 7th grader in their reading and english. What are these classes like? I have a 7th grader that would require special services. My 5th grader does ok but after looking at their program I think he would place fine in 4th grade english and reading. I really need help with the reading and writing. I am wondering if I should wait until next year and do a full enrollment, enroll now in a few subjects or do a full enrollment now. Anyone have any experience with this?
  20. Yeah, he's dysgraphic so writing notes out are difficult for him. This way seems to work best, he would read what he highlighted then paraphrase or direct quote. It worked ok for him, however, not sure how it will work when he has to tackle something larger.
  21. I agree that a research paper is 5-10 pages! My ds can read something then paraphrase it. It was all the citing and note cards that through him off. He ended up just using different highlighters in the text instead of note cards, he even went as far as photocopying a couple of pages from a book so he could use his highlighters. I guess I was under the delusion that this type of work was reserved for high school.
