  1. My friends son uses just the workbook. He watches the video then does the work. It just works out better for him.:)
  2. She may want to try Verticy by Calvert if she feels she needs a boxed curriculum. They will do the testing to determine what level she needs to be in.
  3. Thanks guys, glad to know that I am not the only one in this sinking ship!
  4. There. I said it. DS 14 mouth is unbelievable. DS 10 waaanttssss to go back to PS. I just don't feel like I have the energy anymore. I still don't feel better.:glare:
  5. LOL! I am reading that book right now! It's pretty good. The book recommends Language! and a good tutor. Have you used this program? No, the tutor has not assigned any homework yet.
  6. I just wanted to give an update on the tutoring. I talked to the tutor about my son's retrival issues and she kinda got an attitude with me ( I did it nicely) and she said she "has tutored for several years and if they can not answer the question then they do not know it", I very sweetly said "ok". Then I asked about time/measuring progress, ect. and she said "that there is no time frame on how long it takes a kid to get something", (ok I knew this). I expressed to her that he needs to be ready to move to the closer tutor by December at least (we can have really bad winters here) and that I would be willing to drive for extra sessions or work with him if she wanted. She said she was unsure about the time it would take. That I feel was a fair statement but I am trying to be realistic. So, I left my son there for the tutoring session. I came back and she said "that she retested him and he knew more today then he did a week ago and although he has a few things he needs to work on, they would work on more difficult things instead. She agreed that it is in there but he has slow retrieval. :tongue_smilie: Long story short I will keep taking him as long as I can and just hope he is ready by winter to move to the other tutor.
  7. I just wanted to say that I love the idea of buying myself something nice to wear and a new pen to start the new year! We always focus on the kids but a nice new mug with kona coffee would be a great way to start the new year. :DAfter all, the ps teachers that I know always buy at least one new outfit to start the new school year. Why are we different? :001_smile:
  8. I have a friend who made large cookies and asked to place them at the check out at a local gas station and resturant to raise money to help to send her kid to Disney Band camp. Things were really tough for both her and her dh so they couldn't even come up with the minimum amount needed for her very talented son to go. Determined she asked these two places that were around the cornner from her to put them out (we live in a seasonal reasort area). She never labeled the purpose. Well, she couldn't keep them on the shelf! She ended up earning the money and today it has turned into a small seasonal buisness for her! She supplies most of the gas stations and stores along the lake with these cookies! They are just basic cookies (chocolate chip, sugar, peanut butter, ect). Her next step is to open a small seasonal coffee house now that her youngest graduated! Just a thought!
  9. Paula, Have used the PCI stuff? How about the science and history?
  10. Yeah, unless he sees it on Brain Pop, Discovery, or History isn't going to remember much either and that is only if it is of interest to him. The only thing he remembers is the stuff he WANTS to remember...he can answer any question you have about Plymouth muscle cars but can't remember anything else...I finally got him to spell "like" right (he spelled it lick) because I told he you don't want to get that word wrong when writing a letter to a girl-she wouldn't like a letter that said "I really lick you" All I can do is :grouphug: I feel your pain!
  11. Thanks everyone for responding! I have decided that we will give it till the end of the month. I am going to ask her what the scope and sequence is.I want her to tell me specifically what her goals are for him. She is certified as an O-G tutor. She is the closest one I could find. I really do not care if my son does not like the tutoring and is having to work hard. THIS IS WHAT I WANT! Too bad for him, he doesn't want to work for me he can work for someone else. I just hoped that that person was someone he wouldn't mind working for. I am not offended that she told me the things he couldn't do but I am confounded that she did it in front of him and she doesn't feel the need to send anything home for him. I don't know if I crossing the line by working with him on these things?..I just don't want her to spend 6 weeks on learning how to spell the word "what" when I spent all of last year working on who, what, where, when, how, ect. I guess I need to just back off! You know us homeschool moms like to be in control!
  12. My ds had his first tutoring session with a certified OG tutor this week. He did 1 two hour block with her. I have a few concerns and I hope that someone who tutors or has their child tutor can help me. First of all, she told me my son did not know the sound the letter u makes, does not know how to spell the word "what", and does not know when to use ck or k at the end of a word. She said he has gaps in his learning but it sounded like I was doing the right things with him. I told her that we went over and over and over these concepts. I also told her that with my son he can know some thing 1 min and the next not know it. I said if you ask him the same questions he can answer them right but he will get the other questions wrong (ie words, how to spell, sounds, ect). She commented to me (while the door to her office was open where my son was) that it was too bad that she had him "today because kids like this don't do well on stormy days", whether or not it was true I felt she should not have said it. My son was offended when we left. He wanted to know what she meant by "kids like us"! Ugh..not a good way to start as I am already having a difficult time with him! My son said the only difference between what I was doing and what she was doing was that she made him "talk it through and she had a sand tray". The tutor also informed me that they would be working on spelling and writing..When I hired her I specifically told her that she needed to work with him on reading and expanding his sentences. After testing him she said that is where she is going to start him. I understand that spelling and reading go hand in hand but...?? Ok, so here are my questions 1. Is this normal for a 1st session? 2. Am I interfering too much? 3. Does your child have things to work on between tutoring sessions? 4. Should she know that kids with dyslexia have a difficult time retrieving? 5. Should I give this more time? I just hate paying two car payments a month for something that we have doing all along! I guess I had hoped for more....
  13. Yep, based on what the tutor recommended. I would have ditched Grammar/Comp but she said she is familiar with it and has used it with her students. After he completes level green and starts with red she will swap out some content and add some using Language Circle. I will keep you posted as how it goes!

  15. Does anyone here use work box system with and a older child?
  16. I'll talk to you in August Shari, enjoy your break! PM me when you come back to visit us and I'll share some of the changes that we made in Verticy to start out the year with....:D
  17. What a beautiful picture OhElizabeth! Thanks for posting it! I know what you mean about backing away from the boards! While I continue to read this one, I stay away from the other curriculum boards for the logic stage. I really start comparing when I read that board! I also stay away from bragging moms..While I love hearing good news about how well your kiddo is doing, when it turns into a brag, I leave. Being honest with myself has also lead to acknowledging that I am in fact a control freak (type A personality!). My best and dearest friend is a 4th grade teacher at a private Catholic school and she says that all good teachers are but the trick is learning when to give a little leeway for the kids and yourself!:lol:I think giving myself permission to just let go will help me and both my dcs. Although this is easier said than done! I think being able this school year to say its ok if the house isn't perfect, its ok if we didn't get everything done today the lesson plan said to get done (but we did focus on or learn something), its ok if you don't have time to listen to your (insert relative or friends name here) problems during your school time, its ok for you to go shopping without your kids, its ok to take a walk without your kids, its ok to pawn your kids off on my mom and dad and go away for a weekend (not clean & paint while your kids are away) with my dh, its ok to not take the school day so seriously that you can't laugh with your kids, its ok if the kids do chores even though they are not perfect, ect....see I have a lot to work on this year!
  18. :lol:Whoever has figured this out will be a millionaire! I will be the first person in line waiting to buy the book, code, secret decoder ring, wand, magic fairy dust or what ever it is! I think that part of this stress is the fact that we know that our kids are already behind and this just adds to the stress of everything. I have a friend who hs and she can't figure out why I am always walking around in a state of panic! Um, your kids are 2 grades ahead of what they should be and you have no reason to panic! With that said this is the reason why I am going back to a boxed curriculum and why I have decided the best person to tutor my older is someone else! Mom needs less stress so she doesn't have a heart attack at age 50! I have also decided that I need to do something for myself every week without my kids in tow, not sure what but something. I picked up my son from Lego camp yesterday and he was telling his ps friend on the way home that he was "going back to school". His friend replied "that's good but why when you can stay home?" The conversation ended there..... Shari-If you live closer I would have you over! I think our boys could get along and it would be nice to have someone who knows what eachother is going through.:D I know what you mean about the school bus, it passes here everyday during school at 7:20!
  19. Are you sending him back or is it the moment of weakness we all have?
  20. I have a friend that did this same thing for a person this year..Mom was not involved at all, dads in jail, ..needless to say it was a disaster...but this child was not a family member. Before undertaking this I would make sure that the family is willing to pay for a tutor and pay for something like Verticy to lessen the burden on you. Work out a schedule who will be picking up and dropping this child off at set time. Be clear that not showing up is not acceptable as well as not doing homework. This will be grounds for the the child to return to school! Make sure ground rules are set in stone. Make sure that mom and dad know that while hsing is a good thing that there is no magic pill to cure dyslexia! If mom and dad aren't on board then don't finish reading my post and tell them No! Make a suggestion for a good tutor in the area and leave it at that... As for the parents complaining about the school I have nothing but sympathy for them. I know for one that schools have no interest in helping kids with LDs and parents are under the delusion that the school will help their kids.It took me a long time to figure out that we were on our own if we wanted our child to succeed! As for you there is no way that a 13 year old will be up to speed by the end of the year..This child will have to go all the way back to the beginning. She can make great gains but I highly doubt that she will be up to speed. Trust me, I often wished this for my own son. Without seeing her test results I don't know if she struggles with many things or just a few. Does she have difficulty with writing, reading, memory, ADD (attentive or inattentive)? If you were to use a program like Verticy you could have her do a placement test and they could give you a program that is at her ability level which gives you a starting place. Be aware that most dyslexics are not "typical learners" in the sense that they need to *see* what they are learning. For example movies or projects for history and hands on for learning science (reading about it is not enough). Writing, grammar, spelling and phonics will have to be broken down sequentially in small bits for her. It is no small job and that is why you need support from mom and dad and a good tutor because it can drain you. You need to have energy for your own kiddos! For this age group I really recommend the book Teaching Teens with ADD, ADHD, and executive functioning deficits by Dendy I inter loaned this book through my library and end up buying it! It is a great book to give you an idea of what a child with an LD is dealing with and how to teach them.
  21. Thanks for the suggestions guy! My problem with him going back to school for PE, band, ect is that he would not be just satisfied with this. I know him and he would wonder what else he is missing. Religion class is over and he has moved on to the youth group, however, he is young for his grade. The DRE in our church said this could be a problem. I am going to look in to a co-op that is just starting in my local area (just got an email today). He has also expressed interest in karate so I am going to look into this. I know that in my heart if I send him back he will not like it. DH said that if he wants to go back, let him, but he knows he will come back home. I don't want to go back through the task of unschooling him again and have another wasted year! I come to the conclusion that the grass will always be greener on the other side with this kid!
