  1. Hello Everyone, It has been so long since I have posted here that I feel the need to re-introduce myself. I am Pam L (formerly in Louisiana, but now living in Middle Tennesee). The past year brought many changes to our family. When the boards changed, I was in the midst of sickness. I have fibromyalgia and several other health problems. 2008 was filled with my mother's hopitalization and illness, taking care of her 24/7 for weeks, then moving 600 miles (while she was on home health care), and dh went from being self employed at home to a state employee commuting to and from work. There have been blessings too. We are thrilled to have a house large enough to comfortably fit our family for the very first time. We live on 2 acres near Nashville. We are attending a marvelous church with fantastic Praise and Worship. So, if any of you remember Pam L from La.... I am back. If not, nice to meet you! :) Pam L
  2. I have found that doubling lessons doesn't allow enough time for the information to "perk" or "process" in the brain. We've tried to double some lessons but it just doesn't work for us. I would suggest going over one lesson per day and assigning select problems. It the beginning is truly a review then maybe you will only assign a few problems to work per day. Or perhaps you could review by working through some problems together. If you do decide to double lessons, I would do one lesson early in the day and another later in the day. It takes time for the math to "sink in." IMHO, Pam
  3. I think I will buy one next time I am in B&N to just check out....... I will post an opinion later. Thanks for all replies! Pam
  4. Last week at Barnes and Noble I saw a display of "The Portable Professor". I did not get to look closely as I was in a hurry. Has anyone used it? Is it similar to "The Teaching Company?" Any info welcome! TIA, Pam
  5. We used Easy Grammar a year after R$S....then we used BJU for two years. My 8th grader needs some grammar review, so we are doing R&S workbooks for review. If your student did very well after 3 years of R&S you might concentrate on writing and literature. Or you might go to your local teacher supply store and buy a little grammar workbook for some review.
  6. Is the Henty avaible on CD? He could read the other two and listen to that one. OR even... get the book AND CD and read along.
  7. My suggestion would be to take several companies' placement tests. Also, since she is an adult, you should be able to have several discussions with her about what she likes/dislikes, how she learns best, etc. Would she prefer a workbook (ACE perhaps?), textbooks, real (living books)? Does she need some basic literacy training? For general knowledge, history, even science... think about videos or books on tape. Shows like NOVA can be an education in themselves for an adult, even if you don't understand it all. I have an acquaintance who helped her sis in law a few years ago. Mainly, she helped her pick books from the library (her reading skills were good), they watched and discussed documentaries (with popcorn!), and she worked through a Saxon text book... 87, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I lost tract of my friend, so I don't know the end of the story. Emphasize LEARNING the material and don't test over the material. Get some test practice books and use that to prepare for college entrance exams.
  8. Hey Everyone :), We found out we were moving about the time the boards changed. I registered and have lurked a few times, but am happy to say that I am back on the boards here. :) I have missed the wisdom of this group, and the various mix of opinions, personalities, religions, and knowledge.
