  1. I am graduating my youngest and will no longer be homeschooling. I got YEARS of books, materials, curriculum to sell/give away. ( I must charge shipping if I GIVE away items!) Are the sale/swap boards here still a good place to sell things? Where do you suggest listing? Thanks! Pam
  2. How about various library books? Choose a different continent each month and check out books from the library. Add in documentaries from National Geographic or Nova. Do some copywork. Draw some pictures. We used an Usborne book as a spine one year.
  3. I just submitted grades/paperwork for the last time as a homeschool mom. I cried. I have taught and graduated four kids from our little homeschool. Now aged 18 to 24. Over 20 years of homeschooling. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED :)
  4. Not everyone has the "talent" for drawing. I would count hours and content more than the "skill." Some of our art assignments were "abstract" for this very reason! :)
  5. If she WANTS to do another year, then I would do another year. Two of mine would have seen benefits from a 5th year of high school academically, although it would have been devastating to them emotionally. Look at your state requirements as a guideline to graduating.
  6. As I sat down with ds for our Monday "school meeting", I realized that my homeschool mom days are almost over. I felt my eyes tearing up as I looked at the calendar. The date of graduation. Our last last day of school. The date grades are due. I started teaching my oldest dd to read when she was 3, almost 4, years old. That was in 1995. We did a little bit of "Kindergarten" in 1996. In 1997 we were full into homeschooling, with dd2 folding in and ds1 in "pre-k". Now, my youngest son will graduate from our homeschool in May 2016. I have taught four wonderful children through good times and bad times. Lots of "good" homeschool days. Lots of days when "nothing" was done. I remember a few years when "nothing" was accomplished for months because of illness, job loss, moving, deaths, births. I have posted many questions on these forums. I have posted many problems here. I don't know how many hours I've spent being encouraged here. Sometimes being discouraged, too. I have not been active on these boards in the past year. Maybe even the past two years. But, as my calendar tells me that I am only a homeschool mom for 12 more weeks (really 10 as grades must be turned in early), I felt a NEED to come and post. I'd like to spend more time here in the next 10-12 weeks, if time allows. Several years ago I had to go back to work part-time to make our financial ends meet. I've had to work 2 part-time jobs some of that time. I've scaled back some at work to relish the end of my homeschool career... and part of that is The Well Trained Mind.

  8. S/D was part of our English grade. In fact, most graded assignments were S/D assignments.
  9. I just learned about the streaming service from Great Courses. Has anyone used this yet? Worth the money? I'm am beginning my last semester as a homeschool mom and cannot believe I'm thinking about spending more money on homeschooling! Thanks for all replies! Pam
  10. My 12th grader is reading Bennett's "America, The Last Best Hope" and the Cengage edition of "The American Pagent". He is a history buff so I get more oral narrations than I really want. :) He'll do several quizzes from quizlet.com. And will write a few 2-page "reports".
  11. Talk about weird.... my youngest is in the 12th grade now... and doing almost everything independently. I homeschooled four! I've been at it almost 20 years! I'm with you, gal! :)
  12. We, personally, use McDougal Littel's "The Language of Literature", which is a secular literature textbook. I told her that I would just give her that text and explain to her dd how to work through the book on her own. I have offered to assign and grade writing assignments. The dd is familiar with using "workbooks" and wants that! I agree that workbooks are "spoon fed" and "fill in blanks" ... but considering this family and the situation this year... that might be the best fit. I wonder if an ACT test prep book might fill her want for a workbook?
  13. I"m asking for a friend who has pulled her 12th grade dd out of public schools. The daughter would like an English 4 workbook. From our conversation, I think something like Alpha Omega LifePacs is what she is looking for.... but secular. Any ideas? Thanks! Pam
  14. I agree with your post. And, that is my plan. I am looking for a good text or workbook to make sure I am covering the skills. I don't plan on having this student work through an entire book. However, I don't want to "make up" problems either. Does anyone still use the Modern Curriculum Press workbooks? Maybe I should just go to Barnes and Noble and look at workbooks? I wish I had not had sold/given away all my elementary resources! But, I did not plan on tutoring!
  15. I have used BCM before! Sold my copy. :( Might buy it again. Any other opinion? Thanks!
  16. I am working as a tutor now. :) One student that I will be working with is a 6th grade boy that needs a good solid review of the basics. Any ideas for a workbook, textbook, website to review elementary math? Thanks Pam
  17. If you graduate him and his show ends, he can apply to community college at that time. What does the CC require? I would determine what credits he needs on a transcript and begin working on those. IF he goes on tour, then make decisions together. I would think that touring could be translated into credits.
  18. Thanks for all the information. As I looked through Amazon, I recognized the books that I used in high school!!! :) This student has done grammar and I want a good, solid review. I think the complete course is the one that I want. Thanks for the info about Emmanuel books.
