  1. It didn't take DH too long to put up the extensions, but all the doors to the extensions took forever. We had just enough parts--he finished everything with exactly one screw leftover. So here's the finished product: These are the deeper shelves on the long wall. The extensions only come in standard depth, so DH lined them up so that the fronts would be flush with the bookcases. He also put in extra bracing under the first shelf up so that we have another row that can handle heavier books and LPs (we have more LPs than will fit in the bottom shelves along this wall, plus a ton of heavy art books). Getting the books onto the shelves is going to take a while, since we want to sort what we have, cull out stuff we don't think we'll read again, and get rid of duplicates (the result of DH and I being in the same graduate program). The rough plan is fiction on the wall in the first picture, nonfiction on the long wall, and specific homeschooling stuff on the shortest wall (third picture). Also further in the future are plans for a desk/table and a nice leather couch (I'm hoping to find a sofa bed) on the fourth wall. Someone asked about bookcase lights--we didn't put any in since the room is quite bright if the can lights are turned all the way up. Anyway, it turned out even better than we expected--we are very happy with the final result (although we are still waiting for the brown outlet covers)! I certainly recommend Billys for anyone looking to put in a lot of shelving, and we figured that we got this done for 1/5 to 1/6 of the prices we were quoted for custom-shelving.
  2. 32 oz containers of organic European-style yogurt (plain--I buy both whole milk and nonfat). I like that it's just milk and yogurt cultures--no pectin or anything else added.
  3. Looks like it just hit 125 orders, so it's 50% off now :) Off to order it!
  4. I ended up with too much Italian sausage because I was supposed to provide the main course for a potluck that was cancelled due to bad weather. I have about six lb. in sausage links that I had to freeze. I have a few events coming up where I need to bring an appetizer, so I'm wondering if anyone has good appetizer recipes with Italian sausage. Even better if they don't have to be baked right before serving, but I could handle that if necessary. Thanks!
  5. I opted to pay more for a machine that doesn't require a frozen canister--just put in the ingrdients and start.
  6. I rarely buy ice cream, but if I do, it's only the really good stuff that doesn't have weird stuff like cellulose in it. If I buy the cream from Costco, I think it is somewhat cheaper than store-bought premium stuff. It would be more expensive if I were limited to buying those tiny cartons of cream at the grocery store.
  7. Kiss Me, Kate and Cinderella (the Rodgers and Hammerstein version)
  8. hahaha--thanks for giving me a good laugh tonight!
  9. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Little House on the Prairie. But I agree with a pp that I'd pick Farmer Boy.
  10. Another good source for scores is CPDL (Choral Public Domain Library): http://www0.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
  11. No. I don't know any adult who regretted learning an instrument as a child (and I know plenty of adults who regret that they quit sometime during childhood).
  12. Here's the link to smugmug's prices and features for the different levels: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/photo-sharing-features/
  13. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. She sounds like a terrible doctor! All the best to you in finding a much better OB :grouphug:
  14. Early around here: Breakfast at 7:30/8, lunch at 11:30, dinner at 5.
  15. smugmug.com does not distort or compress files, and there's no limit on how many pictures you can upload.
  16. violamom, we also focus just on western music. I think that "Listen to This" would have been better if Bonds had cut out the token world music chapters and beefed up the early music chapters instead. Also, you made me think of the ethno prof at my undergrad--a very nice man, but one who had clearly done a few too many drugs in the sixties.
  17. External hard drives (I've had friends whose hard drives crashed, so I make sure they're backed up on at least two) and smugmug.com I've had the rug pulled out from under me with some free photo sites, so now I would rather pay for a quality service.
  18. As they get older, I would also recommend having more than one "big" (whatever that may mean for your student) assignment due at the same time. Once they're in college, they're going to find that Professor A couldn't care less that her big paper is due the same day as Professor B's big exam. It's the student's job to plan for that in advance. That's my advice as someone who's taught at the college level.
  19. New round of pictures! All the bookcases are in, along with the glass doors. DH added the knobs to the door because Ikea only offers a magnetic closure that is frankly quite cheap. We just picked out the knobs from Home Depot. He is still working on bolting the bookcases to each other and to the wall. Extensions going almost to the ceiling (and their glass doors) will be next! (Also, I miscounted initially--it's 15 bookcases, not 16 :) ) The couch is mostly blocking it, but if you look really closely, you'll see that DH had to raise the corner bookcase and the one to its left a little because he discovered that our floor is slightly uneven. When I'm in the room, I can see it because I know where to look for it--but I don't think it's noticeable at first glance. Long wall. You can see the reflection of the door on the opposite wall. This is the only wall where it didn't fit perfectly, but I think we can live with the little gap on the far right :)
  20. Always credit card. We pay it every month and get points. I keep some cash for places that don't take cards, but I like the convenience of credit cards. I only use checks for personal payments--like if someone in my coop makes a bigger order to get a discount or reduce shipping costs.
  21. You can also look into music from ancient Greece.
  22. In the book Fix Freeze Feast (or variation of that), it suggests making a huge batch and then freezing it in zip-top bags unbaked. Then you can do the mixing at once but not worry about having stale granola.
  23. violamom, I think it looks better than the Discovering Music DVDs (better quality recordings, too, from my quick glance), but it's still a little light on medieval/Renaissance/early Baroque. Also, the world music aspect seems to be a bit of an afterthought. I'd rather have separate western and world music texts--whenever I've seen them combined, one always gets the short end of the stick. I don't know--for that kind of money, I'd rather piece it together myself and use the money to add some really good CDs to my music collection instead.
  24. Hey, I have a certain fondness for CPE! He's just not what I'd consider a "top 15" composer :)
