  1. I am feeling like such a failure. Because of my son's defiant behaviors, my husband is seriously having me put my son back in ps. I am so upset and in my heart of hearts believe that homeschool is what he needs, but lately it has been so hard to teach him, since he is not focused, reluctant to do work, and defiant. I feel like such a failure if I place him back in ps. I know that he will not get the education he needs at ps. My husband just keeps telling me that part of his behavior is because he is not being around other kids his age. I do belong to a coop once a week and am registering him in a music program as well. Sorry for complaining, but as I do not have any full support in family and friends, I wanted to post here. Thanks for listening. Please pray for me. Thanks
  2. Peggy, Thanks so much. I have the Maxwell's books and will start reading today. I do believe that my son's (11 yrs old) behavior will improve once we have a more structural schedule. I tried to not be so structural, but obviously it has not work, on the contrary it has made him more anxious, reluctant to do school work and just plain defiant. In our family structure works best and I need to stick with what works best. Thanks again for your thoughts ad ideas. Lillian Vincent (11), Rebekah (5)
  3. Just wanted some thoughts on structure and behaviors: Has anyone had success with their Special Needs Child (high functioning autism) with being able to eliminate behaviors when implementing more structure in their homeschooling day?? Just wondering? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
  4. That is awesome. My son was gluten and casein free when he was younger and at around 7 years old I reintroduced gluten and at time he would have casein. I have removed all casein from his diet for the past few months and will remove gluten also, hopefully it will help him. Thanks for your thoughts. Lillian
  5. Thank you so much Nature for the great ideas. I will definitely try them and see how they work with him. Thanks also for the support and kindness.
  6. Specialmama, I posted this in Special Needs because he is autistic. Therefore, I assumed that people would know that he is not a typical child. I did not post on the general forum since that is mainly for typical children. Also, I have read and apply numerous ideas that others have suggested and obviously they have not worked yet, that is why I am posting again. Sorry if I am posting the same problem over and over but I really thought that the forum was here for support and also for when you have a bad day and you just need to talk and be able to express yourself. Unfortunately, I do not have family and friends that understand special needs children or understand about homeschooling so I thought I can come here. Sorry again. I will not post about it no more. Thanks
  7. Hello, Lately I have been having trouble with my 11 year old son. He has OCD and I believe a bit of Aspergers. He has been very hyper lately and just rebellious. It seems to me that he has lost respect to me, where he does not want to listen to what I say. And will do opposite and just give me a hard time. If I ask him to do certain lessons, he sighs and complains. He has been flapping hands lately more than ever and also his focus has been worse, he gets preoccupied with what his 5 year old sister is doing rather than paying full attention to his school work. I am at my wits end and just do not know how to handle this. It has been happening too often and I would love to know what other moms would suggest. Thank you.
  8. Does anyone have a good title to read on OCD for children? Thanks
  9. Hello, Does anyone have any information on how to start lapbooking? I have been told a bit about it and would maybe like to start my children started into lapbooking since they can also learn to be creative, help in motor skills and have fun while learning. Thanks
  10. Hello, My son who has been homeschooled since April 2010 and loves it has been having some bad behaviors towards me lately. He is jealous of his sister who is 5 and he feels that he is treated unfairly. He feels that he is punished more than her, yet he is constantly teasing her and talking back to his parents. I have taken him to a behavioral therapist and does not want to go back. He is telling me at times that He hates me, he doesn't like me especially when he gets a consequence for his bad behavior. I am hoping that someone can give me some insights on how to approach the bad behavior and help to eliminate it and also any books that you have read that has helped you to conquer and approach the bad behavior(talking back, rebellious, not listening) that you can recommend to me to read to help me in this trying time. My son is 11-1/2 years old and also going through puberty, which obviously does not make the matters better. He was diagnosed with High functioning autism when he was 2.8 years old. All I have tried to do is what ever it takes to make him do and feel better. My husband and I have sacrifice and will sacrifice everything for our children. Thanks and looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I will also be ready to purchase whatever book you recommend for me to read to help with this behavior. thanks again. L

  12. I just ordered two books grade 4 and 5 from McCall-Crabbs and McCall-Harby Test Lessons in Reading books. I am excited to getting started with these new ones. Thank you again.
  13. Thank you I am really going to look at all of these and pick a few for now. thank you.
  14. No big deal I don't need the answer key we can do it together. Thanks
  15. Content Reading workbooks look really good, I do not need the answer book, so I may look into it and purchase one to keep at it. Also the school specialty books look good too, I may also purchase one of those and really drill him with comprehension. Thank you.
  16. I have been using reading detective but I was also looking for a workbook. I am trying to overload him with reading comprehension as much as possible to catch him up to where he should be at this age(11-1/2 years old). Thanks Lillian
  17. Hello, I have just finished using Rod and Staff reading comprehension workbook which was great. My son is very weak in reading comprehension. Wanted to know if anyone has any ideas or place where I can purchase a reading comprehension workbook to continue reviewing reading comprehension throughout the school year? thanks Lillian
  18. Thank you everyone for the great support. I am thankful that at least I have everyone here for support. Thank God! and thank you.
  19. thank you everyone for your support and kind thoughts. It just is hard at times, because you feel so alone and again I doubt myself sometimes because I really want what is best for my children. Thanks
  20. Hello, I am continuing my journey of homeschooling my children and all I get from family and friends are not encouraging words. All they say is you are not putting them in public school, they need to be in public school and play with other children. Public school is good for them. At times it is so discouraging. And then I keep asking myself an I doing the right thing. I doubt myself at times which isn't good. Even at times my husband questions me if we are doing the right thing. I have signed up for a coop and activities which would have my children playing and interacting with other children. Unfortunately, noone in our church homeschools either. I guess I am having a rough day today. I am the type of person that is happy for everyone and what they choose do in life and how they raise their children, yet people always seem to criticize me in all I do. How would you or do you handle people in your lives that are just non-supportive? Just wanted to share. thanks for listening. Lillian
  21. Since I just started homeschooling in 2010, we really are just starting out with other groups. We have also just moved a month ago. We are joining a Co-op which meets on Wednesday and has History, Geography, Gym, and Literacy. I would like to sign up my son on a Bowling Club. Also there is a Music Program which sounds interesting and I think my kids will like. And obviously, the field trips, park days, different activities as the weather gets better.
  22. What is your favorite Discipline book? Which book helped you discipline and raise your children and made a big difference in your home life? I am currently reading Sheparding a Child's Heart and I am enjoying it tremendously.
  23. Hello, Just wondering what kinds of activities outside homeschooling do you have your kids attend for socialization? I am signing up for a co-op and hopefully for a music program. I may also sign my son up for a bowling club too. Also, how do you feel about co-ops?
