  1. I loved the "Sigma Scientific" catalog. They had some really cool histology dyes and chemicals. BTW thanks for this, I sent it to "everyone" . Also, cmarango - The Carolina Biological Supply Catalog is great for home school science and perusal by scientific Moms....it is more like Target though.
  2. I have 2 nieces that went/go to Umass Amherst. One has graduated and went on to a PhD program in molecular bio/cancer research. She majored in Animal Science at Umass. She lived at home for 3 years, the whole party scene was NOT to her taste. She rented an apartment in her sr. year. Since she had many local friends attending, it was easy to learn to navigate through such a big school. She had lots of different little campus jobs that led to her sr. year job at a cancer research facility. She enjoyed the "five college" aspect of the school....she played music and took classes at Smith and Amherst. My 2nd niece is a jr....because of her senior year in high school community college credits....she is majoring in BioMed. Engineering. She lives in the honors engineering dorm. She has a very studious roommate. She is on an interterm research project in Japan. There've been some good job/interning possibilities for her. She has not taken advantage of the 5 college aspects as her major is all on campus. Both girls have been reasonably happy at the school. The financial and merit aid offered to them made it out of the question to attend any other institution. I grew up in 'Hamp so, I can attest that the area is vibrant and exciting and nigh-on perfect for any sort of college student. My dds love to visit there whenever they get the chance.
  3. DD1 did most of the writing and application-filling-out on her own. I reviewed and edited essays, mostly for word and character count purposes. She contacted the schools with questions, and about auditions and interviews. I made out calendars, did all the financial aid forms.... For DD2 I did all of the above but had to be much more active in the essay-creation process. DD was "stumped" over a few of them with writer's block arising at the most critical periods....I talked her thru the outlines and then proofread after each bit of writing. That was really hard. I had to do more transcript and homeschooling philosophy writing for her apps. DD1 went to ps. The most important thing I did with both was to schedule time to check the status of the whole application process....time to talk and check lists and look over web sites together. This began weekly and was sometimes hourly!!!
  4. Hey WTM forum folks...I'm back lurking... My eldest dd applied to 7 schools. One local financial and academic safety, 2 that were large state unis with honor's programs and dance programs. The rest were top 20 LACs. She applied to one of the LACs ED2 and got in with a very nice fin. aid package. She withdrew all her other applications. DD2 applied to most of her 11 schools early action. She applied to 3 "reach" LACs which she was not accepted to. She applied to the local academic and financial safety. The rest were state and private schools. She got in with a bunch of different FA packages. She chose to attend one that burdens all of us financially, but was the best fit for her academically. Kind of a cross post...With DD1 we visited schools that were on the way to somewhere else. We did two "college tours": in the spring break of Jr. year and the fall break of Sr. year. Due to financial and logistical constraints with dd2, we visited 6 of the "accepted" colleges. She made her choice after the last visit. She is extremely happy there.
  5. It will be a long hard haul, especially when you get to the fafsa/css stuff. It seems as though the application process will never end. And then the results just sort of piddle in un expectedly. Last year, right after my dd and I hit the button on the first common apps, I promised her that we'd get thru it and I also promised her that 1 year later I would call her and we'd celebrate and say "I can't believe it" and "I told you so". I called her early this month and we both whooped it up.
  6. My dh and I got into technical writing though the editing of scientific journals. All we needed for our entry level jobs were to pass a grammar test and have an undergrad. science degree. I only worked for 2 yrs. in the field and then went back in the lab but, dh has worked on and off in some capacity in the field for the past 30 yrs. Some english departments have expository writing classes or journalism classes....that would be a place to start. Editing peer papers (a lot of schools have those writing labs for students to go to get help with their papers) or reading over faculty papers can be an education in itself.
  7. It ended up being that both my dd had fairly well memorized the web-sites and catalogs even before we had visited their target schools. The ones that made their final list also had their facebook group comments memorized :D I was always being called in to take a look or listen to this.... BTW - We all had our favorite video stars from each of the schools.
  8. We are out of state CalPoly. Our transcript had loads of info. about our course content. My dd did not "test out" of any classes but, she could have. She is going there b/c it is perfect for her. There are many v. smart CA residents, home schooled or public schooled, who did not get in. There is some resentment about this but my dd does not care. We had all the required grades in a-g classes. Dd went to public school fr. and soph. year. It did look as though taking the SAT 2 in some of the subjects might be helpful but, dd was not required to.
  9. I would have loved to have gone there, if I had known about it when I was college age. It seems to have a great balance of academics for kids who are undecided. Coming out of that school, a hard working kid would have gained a real education.....Many drop out (we heard) but, for those who participated whole-heartedly in its philosophy, it works great.
  10. Just visiting to see how y'all are doing. I was an RA and so was my eldest dd. I was one during sr. year and it was good that they wanted more mature RAs. It helped me handle a lot of issues because I had "been there, done that" myself. I found that my empathy skills and conversational abilities got a good work out. I had freshmen and upperclassmen in my dorm (co-ed). Every 4 weekends I was not "on call". This was in the old days tho' when students basically took care of themselves and each other. General babysitting was not required but an open door, an open heart, and an open mind were. My eldest dd is very responsible but, not particularly empathetic. She enjoyed the "leadership" aspects of being an RA but, not the touchy, feely, empathy stuff. She did not like being "bothered" by students with problems. She just did it for 1 year.
  11. My dd was admitted to CofC for this year but chose not to go (mainly b/c of financial considerations). She thought that participating in dance and theater would be excellent there (she met with several faculty on our visit who were v. encouraging). She was not accepted to the honor's college. We felt it was b/c of her "homeschooler" application information. We did not have any outside refs. etc. On a funny note....when we visited, we parked in one of those pocket parking lots downtown....and when it was time to go, we almost did not find our rented car. So..write down where you park (we did the next day) b/c all of Charleston is charming and cute, and the parking lots are just stuck into all that cuteness... Hope your dd goes there.
  12. :iagree:I'm drowning mine in brie cheese!:crying:
  13. I took my youngest out to CA via plane on Sunday. We flew into Santa Barbara, rented a car and drove up to San Luis Obispo to CalPoly (my daughter's dream school). We stayed south of SLO in another town that had more shopping....We finished our lists quickly and got a few hours in at this wonderful beach with huge dunes and fab. walking. I moved her in the following day and then cried all the way back to Santa Barbara. She is my 2nd and my only homeschooler. We had gotten very close in the last 2 years what with hsing, a house fire, the college search, and then my hiatus of 2 months this summer with a v. serious round of a pneumonia-like illness. I will miss her company v. much. My oldest is a sr. and spent the summer at her LAC outside NYC doing paid and unpaid summer work in art history. We just saw her for 2 weeks this summer. That seems barely time to talk, etc. I do want to thank all of the high school and college board wtm forum members for all the advice and guidance you've given me over these last 2.5 years. I could not have put together my curricula or indeed have known how to teach without all of you. I particularly needed help in choosing math and science books and in figuring out how to conduct such classes at home. It was so much easier with the forums to provide me with loads of possibilities. So, farewell. I may lurk and occasionally comment but, my thrice daily forum visiting days are over. Love to all of you and best of luck in the future. :grouphug:
  14. There are some people who studied the genesis of Appalachian Folk Music from scots/irish roots and how it spread throughout the country to become "American" music. New Orleans music might also be interesting.
  15. What Color Is Your Parachute For Teens.....or the adult version. It is something she can work thru on her own and is really fun! Re: Candid's message, a teen is not an adult....knowing your passions and your best abilities should steer you in a direction but, not set anything in stone.... I like Mr. Newport's take on this.
  16. So happy for her. Being able to communicate effectively will be v. valuable to her as a psychologist. Writing up diagnostics and case reports is hard work. Knowing how to write well will make it easier.
  17. Yeah Denise and dd!!! I'm sure she will be loving the creative vibe of that school. Such a beautiful setting too. My dh wants to retire there. He feels college in that sort of town is just wasted on the young!
  18. I like how they tell you the important stuff in that non-chalant fashion. Especially when you're half asleep!!!
  19. My eldest dd is at college now and dd #2 is trying to finish up our homeschool curriculum. She and I are v. close after all the ordeal of homeschool, house fire recovery effort and college app process. I think I will miss her as we have partnered thru all these ordeals. But, I do know that it is time for her to get out there into the world and will be completely joyful when she does. College is an exciting adventure, I look forward to hearing "some" of the details. We've still got lots to do until she leaves in Sept. I will miss my partner in crime and Dark Shadows viewing companion and cupcake concocting partner when she goes. I can just imagine the dh and I staring at each other and asking "Now What?" some evening in late September:001_smile:
  20. I've always had jobs in science labs or in offices but, after homeschooling these 2 years, I need to be out and about more. But, I know for sure, no more teaching moody teenagers all day. Dh buys a lottery tix every week, so there's always hope! Dh also has a few more years at his office job and then maybe we'll move to Ecuador(?).
  21. I started learning to cook vegetarian Indian cuisine this year. Some very wonderful beans and rice dishes there. When visiting Charleston SC, we went to a restaurant called "Husk" and I'm now gearing up to investigate how to become a radical "locavore", cheap and PC? This is the 2nd college student in our family. The 1st got a lot of merit aid. We only pay part of our EFC for her. This dd is a bit different (aren't they always?). But, hopefully we'll make it through this one year when both are in college. I will be done with homeschooling so, I will try to ease myself into the "working for money" world somehow. This will be the beginning of a new career, hopefully. I may have to get out "What Color Is Your Parachute?" and read it again;)
  22. Big Congrats. :) :) Looks like you are on your way. Just keep on truckin' as they used to say in the old days!
  23. We did it. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is getting our sweatshirt and decal orders and our tuition dollars. Dh and I are getting creative with beans and rice. Dd is getting to be beyond happy about her choice. SLO really was the right place for her. I remain wary about the Cal. State system but, what is life if not a gamble? So, Go Mustangs but, get that calculus done and read some Voltaire in the mean time;)
